Building body identities - exploring the world of female bodybuilders
This thesis explores how female bodybuilders seek to develop and maintain a viable sense of self despite being stigmatized by the gendered foundations of what Erving Goffman (1983) refers to as the 'interaction order'; the unavoidable presentational context in which identities are forged during the course of social life. Placed in the context of an overview of the historical treatment of women's bodies, and a concern with the development of bodybuilding as a specific form of body modification, the research draws upon a unique two year ethnographic study based in the South of England, complemented by interviews with twenty-six female bodybuilders, all of whom live in the U.K. By mapping these extraordinary women's lives, the research illuminates the pivotal spaces and essential lived experiences that make up the female bodybuilder. Whilst the women appear to be embarking on an 'empowering' radical body project for themselves, the consequences of their activity remains culturally ambivalent. This research exposes the 'Janus-faced' nature of female bodybuilding, exploring the ways in which the women negotiate, accommodate and resist pressures to engage in more orthodox and feminine activities and appearances
Is Facebook Use Helping or Hurting Your Healthcare Employees During COVID?
The COVID pandemic has drastically impacted peoplesâ lives and workplaces, especially those who work in healthcare and have been on the forefront battling this global health crisis. There has been great uncertainty regarding how to effectively mitigate health risks due to the pandemic, and many healthcare employees have turned to social media outlets, such as Facebook, to express their thoughts and concerns. However, social media can either play a positive or negative role depending on what type of information is transmitted and how it is perceived. Some employees are more affected by social media than others regarding the pandemic, and people cope differently with this information based on their personality. Two prominent personality traitsâextraversion and neuroticismâhave been tied to positive and negative affect, respectively. Based on Affective Events Theory (AET), this paper will unpack these crucial relationships to analyze two key personality dimensions of healthcare employees, extraversion and neuroticism, the moderating role of Facebook use, and outcomes at work. This paperâs purpose is to empirically investigate how, in the highly COVID affected healthcare industry, these variables impact employee mental health, counterproductive work behavior, and workplace social courage
In her own words: exploring the subjectivity of Freudâs âteacherâ Anna von Lieben
This project is inspired by Roy Porter (1985), who draws attention to the patient-shaped gap in medical history, and Rita Charon (2006), who emphasises the need to bring the patientâs narrative to the fore in the practice of medicine. The principal aim was to devise a means of accessing the lived experience of a patient who is no longer alive in order to gain an understanding of her narrative. Anna von Lieben was identified as a suitable subject as she wrote a substantial quantity of autopathographical poetry suitable for analysis and her status as Freudâs patient makes her a person of significant interest to the history of medicine.
The poems were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), an idiographic and inductive method of qualitative research, based on Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology, which explores the lived experience of individuals and is committed to understanding the first-person perspective from the third-person position.
The main findings from the IPA study reveal that Anna experienced a prolonged period of malaise, starting in late adolescence which she believed to result, at least partly, from a traumatic experience which occurred at that time. The analysis also indicates that Anna suffered from deep and lasting feelings of guilt and shame. The discovery of additional family documentation enabled me to contextualise and add substance to the findings of the IPA study. Annaâs husbandâs diaries in particular reveal that Anna:
⢠had a severe and longstanding gynaecological disorder
⢠suffered from severe morphinism
⢠did not benefit from Freudâs treatment which seemed neither to ease her symptoms nor identify any cause
⢠was treated in Paris, not by Jean-Martin Charcot as previously supposed, but by a French hydrotherapist, Theodore Keller, who appears to have become a person of considerable significance in her life.
The above findings led me to investigate Annaâs comorbidities (gynaecological disease and morphinism) and to show how those could be responsible for much of the symptomatology identified by Freud as âhysteriaâ. I then explore the possibility that her psychotic-like experiences could have been iatrogenically induced by her treatment first by Keller and then by Freud. Finally, I propose a fourfold set of hypotheses as an alternative to Freudâs diagnosis of hysteria
Unraveling the effect of sex on human genetic architecture
Sex is arguably the most important differentiating characteristic in most mammalian
species, separating populations into different groups, with varying behaviors, morphologies,
and physiologies based on their complement of sex chromosomes, amongst other factors. In
humans, despite males and females sharing nearly identical genomes, there are differences
between the sexes in complex traits and in the risk of a wide array of diseases. Sex provides
the genome with a distinct hormonal milieu, differential gene expression, and environmental
pressures arising from gender societal roles. This thus poses the possibility of observing
gene by sex (GxS) interactions between the sexes that may contribute to some of the
phenotypic differences observed. In recent years, there has been growing evidence of GxS,
with common genetic variation presenting different effects on males and females. These
studies have however been limited in regards to the number of traits studied and/or
statistical power. Understanding sex differences in genetic architecture is of great
importance as this could lead to improved understanding of potential differences in
underlying biological pathways and disease etiology between the sexes and in turn help
inform personalised treatments and precision medicine.
In this thesis we provide insights into both the scope and mechanism of GxS across the
genome of circa 450,000 individuals of European ancestry and 530 complex traits in the UK
Biobank. We found small yet widespread differences in genetic architecture across traits
through the calculation of sex-specific heritability, genetic correlations, and sex-stratified
genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We further investigated whether sex-agnostic
(non-stratified) efforts could potentially be missing information of interest, including sex-specific trait-relevant loci and increased phenotype prediction accuracies. Finally, we
studied the potential functional role of sex differences in genetic architecture through sex
biased expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and gene-level analyses.
Overall, this study marks a broad examination of the genetics of sex differences. Our findings
parallel previous reports, suggesting the presence of sexual genetic heterogeneity across
complex traits of generally modest magnitude. Furthermore, our results suggest the need to
consider sex-stratified analyses in future studies in order to shed light into possible sex-specific molecular mechanisms
Structure and adsorption properties of gas-ionic liquid interfaces
Supported ionic liquids are a diverse class of materials that have been considered
as a promising approach to design new surface properties within solids for gas
adsorption and separation applications. In these materials, the surface morphology and
composition of a porous solid are modified by depositing ionic liquid. The resulting
materials exhibit a unique combination of structural and gas adsorption properties
arising from both components, the support, and the liquid. Naturally, theoretical and
experimental studies devoted to understanding the underlying principles of exhibited
interfacial properties have been an intense area of research. However, a complete
understanding of the interplay between interfacial gas-liquid and liquid-solid
interactions as well as molecular details of these processes remains elusive.
The proposed problem is challenging and in this thesis, it is approached from
two different perspectives applying computational and experimental techniques. In
particular, molecular dynamics simulations are used to model gas adsorption in films
of ionic liquids on a molecular level. A detailed description of the modeled systems is
possible if the interfacial and bulk properties of ionic liquid films are separated. In this
study, we use a unique method that recognizes the interfacial and bulk structures of
ionic liquids and distinguishes gas adsorption from gas solubility. By combining
classical nitrogen sorption experiments with a mean-field theory, we study how liquid-solid interactions influence the adsorption of ionic liquids on the surface of the porous
support.
The developed approach was applied to a range of ionic liquids that feature
different interaction behavior with gas and porous support. Using molecular
simulations with interfacial analysis, it was discovered that gas adsorption capacity
can be directly related to gas solubility data, allowing the development of a predictive
model for the gas adsorption performance of ionic liquid films. Furthermore, it was
found that this CO2 adsorption on the surface of ionic liquid films is determined by the
specific arrangement of cations and anions on the surface. A particularly important
result is that, for the first time, a quantitative relation between these structural and
adsorption properties of different ionic liquid films has been established. This link
between two types of properties determines design principles for supported ionic
liquids.
However, the proposed predictive model and design principles rely on the
assumption that the ionic liquid is uniformly distributed on the surface of the porous
support. To test how ionic liquids behave under confinement, nitrogen physisorption
experiments were conducted for microâ and mesopore analysis of supported ionic
liquid materials. In conjunction with mean-field density functional theory applied to
the lattice gas and pore models, we revealed different scenarios for the pore-filling
mechanism depending on the strength of the liquid-solid interactions.
In this thesis, a combination of computational and experimental studies provides
a framework for the characterization of complex interfacial gas-liquid and liquid-solid
processes. It is shown that interfacial analysis is a powerful tool for studying
molecular-level interactions between different phases. Finally, nitrogen sorption
experiments were effectively used to obtain information on the structure of supported
ionic liquids

Self-help/mutual aid groups in mental health : ideology, helping mechanisms and empowerment
In the last quarter of the twentieth century, self-help/mutual aid groups for mental health issues started to emerge in growing numbers, mainly in Western societies, offering and/or advocating for alternative non-traditional forms of support, and attracted the attention of many researchers and clinicians for their unique characteristics. Among the subjects of interest are typologies of groups, helping mechanisms and benefits from participation. However, there is lack of systematic research in the area and existing studies have been largely confined to the therapeutic value of these groups instead of acknowledging their
socio-political meaning and subsequent psychosocial benefits for their members like personal empowerment.
The present study was conducted during the transitional years from a Conservative to a newly elected Labour Government (1996 -1998), with subsequent policy shifts taking place in the welfare sector. The purpose of the study was to explore the potential of self-help groups as part of a broader new social movement, the service user movement, focussing on the English scene. It addressed this issue examining the relevance of a group typology based on political ideology and focus of change. To test the validity of this classification for members, a set of individual characteristics and group mechanisms as well as their change
through time were examined. The sample consisted of fourteen mental health selfhelp/mutual aid groups from London and South East England, with a variety of structural and organisational features. The methodology used was a combination of both quantitative (self-completion questionnaires) and qualitative techniques (analysis of written material, participant observation and interviews). Measurements were repeated after a one-year interval (Time 1N=67, Time 2 N=56).
Findings showed that, indeed, political ideology of self-help/mutual aid groups provided the basis of a meaningful typology and constitutes a comprehensive way of categorising them. Group ideology was related to specific helping mechanisms and aspects of personal empowerment. Specifically, conservative and combined group members reported more expressive group processes like sharing of feelings and self-disclosure, while radical group members were more empowered and optimistic. Group identification was also associated with specific helping activities and aspects of empowerment in the three group categories. The psychosocial character of group types and the beneficial outcomes for members remained stable through time. In general, prolonged participation was reflected in greater member identification with the group and resulted in improved mental wellbeing, increased social support, companionship and optimism for the future

Know Your Bugs: A Collaborative Evaluation of a Community Health Education Module That Aims to be Accessible to Adults with Learning Disabilities
The right to health should be a fundamental right of everyone. However, despite initiatives to improve the health of adults with learning disabilities, concerns about poorer health and health inequalities remain, and have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Accessible health promotion can help to overcome barriers to healthy behaviour but the effectiveness of health education in infection prevention and self-care is unknown. This research aimed to understand the health education experiences of adults with learning disabilities regarding a module designed to improve knowledge about self-care, infection prevention and antibiotic use.
Beginning with a scoping review of âwhat worksâ, this research involved observation of the learning context in two locations and semi-structured interviews with 18 course participants to explore health knowledge and behaviour change in the short, medium and longer term. Data were analysed iteratively, addressing the realist concept of context/mechanism/outcome configurations.
Participants had a positive learning experience and gained knowledge about microbes, hand hygiene, self-care, and antibiotic use. Some participants reported behaviour change regarding handwashing and self-care. The contexts that influenced learning were personal, social, physical, active, and external. Mechanisms that interacted with these contexts to trigger learning included: accessible teaching methods, interactive resources, relaxed and effective participant interactions, facilitation of independent thinking and planning, appropriate involvement of supporters, and an inclusive and engaging educator style.
Knowledge gain and changed behaviour intentions were achieved through an engaging, interactive, and focused learning environment, underpinned by a complex and changing combination of interactions. However, further research is needed to understand effective ways of communicating health information in an education context, to understand the impact of education on behaviour change, and to identify ways in which the longer-term retention of learning can be achieved. The research proposes a draft model that can guide effective community health education provision

Privacy-aware Smart Home Interface Framework
Smart home user interfaces are pervasive and shared by multiple users who occupy the space. Therefore, they pose a risk to interpersonal privacy of occupants because an individualâs sensitive information can be leaked to other co-occupants (information privacy), or they can be disturbed by intrusions into their personal space (physical privacy) when the co-occupant interacts with the smart home user interfaces. This thesis hypothesises that interpersonal privacy violations can be mitigated by adapting the user interface layer and presents insights into how to achieve usable user interface adaptation to mitigate or minimise interpersonal privacy violations in smart homes.
The thesis reports two case studies and two user studies. The first case study identifies the key characteristics needed to model the rich context of interpersonal privacy violations scenarios. Then it presents knowledge representation models that are required to represent the identified characteristics and evaluates them for adequacy in modelling the context information of interpersonal privacy violation scenarios. The second case study presents a software architecture and a set of algorithms that can detect interpersonal privacy violations and generate usable user interface adaptations. Then it evaluates the architecture and the algorithms for adequacy in generating usable privacy-aware user interface adaptations. The first user study (N=15) evaluates the usability of the adaptive user interfaces generated from the framework where storyboards were used as the stimulant. Extending the findings from the usability study and expanding the coverage of example scenarios, the second user study (N=23) evaluates the overall user experience of the adaptive user interfaces, using video prototypes as the stimulant.
The research demonstrates that the characteristics identified, and the respective knowledge representation models adequately captured the context of interpersonal privacy violation scenarios. Furthermore, the software architecture and the algorithms could detect possible interpersonal privacy violations and generate usable user interface adaptations to mitigate them. The two user studies demonstrate that the adaptive user interfaces, when used in appropriate situations, were a suitable solution for addressing interpersonal privacy violations while providing high usability and a positive user experience. The thesis concludes by providing recommendations for developing privacy-aware user interface adaptations and suggesting future work that can extend this research
