The Smart Stage: Designing 3D interaction metaphors for immersive and ubiquitous music systems
This conceptual paper describes a work in
progress in the process of design and implementation of the
Smart Stage, an interactive music system prototype for
collaborative musical creativity in immersive and ubiquitous
environments. This system is intended to have a low entry
barrier, thus more forgiving to users with lesser experience or
knowledge in music, and it is designed with affordances to
support intuitive progress in improvisational performance in a
collaborative setting. We present a preliminary technical
overview of the system and a first case study of a 3D
interaction metaphor for granular synthesis, developed for this

Portfolio of Electroacoustic Compositions with Commentaries
This portfolio consists of electroacoustic compositions which were primarily realised
through the use of corporeally informed compositional practices. The manner in which a
composer interacts with the compositional tools and musical materials at their disposal
is a defining factor in the creation of musical works. Although the use of computers in
the practice of electroacoustic composition has extended the range of sonic possibilities
afforded to composers, it has also had a negative impact on the level of physical interaction
that composers have with these musical materials. This thesis is an investigation
into the use of mediation technologies with the aim of circumventing issues relating to
the physical performance of electroacoustic music.
This line of inquiry has led me to experiment with embedded computers, wearable
technologies, and a range of various sensors. The specific tools that were used in the
creation of the pieces within this portfolio are examined in detail within this thesis. I also
provide commentaries and analysis of the eleven electroacoustic works which comprise
this portfolio, describing the thought processes that led to their inception, the materials
used in their creation, and the tools and techniques that I employed throughout the
compositional process
An evaluation of digital interfaces for music composition and improvisation
This PhD reports research on current representative performance paradigms using various interfaces for real time interaction with computer-based musical environments. Each device was selected to cover a particular range of interfaces. Research covers the following areas: hardware interfaces (tangible & game devices); live coding; optical devices, and hardware prototyping.The projects highlight affordances, comparative strengths and weaknesses, and provide suggestions for further improvements for each paradigm. Particular focus is given to the importance of mapping. Each project comprises corresponding software that was developed to facilitate each performance paradigm.The work is not intended to provide an exhaustive evaluation of the technology used in this research; instead, it aims to examine its feasibility for artistic and musical context. The outcomes of the examinations include a series of musical performances employing improvisation as the basis for composition. These paradigms are examined in a live context as well as fixed media that uses material originating in live performances
Common Spaces: Multi-Modal-Media Ecosystem for Live Performances
Common Spaces is an interface for real-time media convergence and live performance combining media, applications and devices. A multimodal media ecosystem was designed to respond to the requirement of a specific performance — how to mix multiple applications into a single environment. This collaborative environment provides a flexible interface for performers to negotiate, share, and mix media, applications, and devices. Common Spaces is a framework based on interoperability and data flow, a network of virtual wires connecting applications that “talk” to each other sharing resources through technologies such as OSC or Syphon. With this approach, media designers have the freedom to choose a set of applications and devices that best suit their needs and are not restricted to a unique environment. We have implemented and performed with this ecosystem in live events, demonstrating its feasibility. In our paper we describe the project's concept and methodology. In the proposed performance we will use the Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature (www.po-ex.net) as a framework, appropriating its database assets, remixing its contents, as well as the techniques and methods they imply, stimulating the understanding of the archive as variable and adaptable. These digital re-readings and re-codings of experimental poems further highlight the importance of the materialities of experimental writing, integrating self-awareness in the modes of exchanges between literature, music, animation, performance, and technology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Plays of proximity and distance: Gesture-based interaction and visual music
This thesis presents the relations between gestural interfaces and artworks which deal with real- time and simultaneous performance of dynamic imagery and sound, the so called visual music practices. Those relation extend from a historical, practical and theoretical viewpoint, which this study aims to cover, at least partially, all of them. Such relations are exemplified by two artistic projects developed by the author of this thesis, which work as a starting point for analysing the issues around the two main topics. The principles, patterns, challenges and concepts which struc- tured the two artworks are extracted, analysed and discussed, providing elements for comparison and evaluation, which may be useful for future researches on the topic
Mobile Music Development Tools for Creative Coders
This project is a body of work that facilitates the creation of musical mobile artworks. The project includes a code toolkit that enhances and simplifies the development of mobile music iOS applications, a flexible notation system designed for mobile musical interactions, and example apps and scored compositions to demonstrate the toolkit and notation system.
The code library is designed to simplify the technical aspect of user-centered design and development with a more direct connection between concept and deliverable. This sim- plification addresses learning problems (such as motivation, self-efficacy, and self-perceived understanding) by bridging the gap between idea and functional prototype and improving the ability to contextualize the development process for musicians and other creatives. The toolkit helps to circumvent the need to learn complex iOS development patterns and affords more readable code.
CSPD (color, shape, pattern, density) notation is a pseudo-tablature that describes performance interactions. The system leverages visual density and patterns of both color and shape to describe types of gestures (physical or musical) and their relationships rather than focusing on strict rhythmic or pitch/frequency content.
