    Inspection scheduling based onreliability updating of gas turbinewelded structures

    This article presents a novel methodology for the inspection scheduling of gas turbine welded structures, based on reliability calculations and overhaul findings. The model was based on a probabilistic crack propagation analysis for welds in a plate and considered the uncertainty in material properties, defect inspection capabilities, weld geometry, and loads. It developed a specific stress intensity factor and an improved first-order reliability method. The proposed routine alleviated the computational cost of stochastic crack propagation analysis, with accuracy. It is useful to achieve an effective design for manufacturing, to develop structural health monitoring applications, and to adapt inspection schedules to airplane fleet experience.We are grateful to the Mechanical Technology Department of ITPAero (R) for supporting and helping us with this study.     Research Findings on Empirical Evaluation of Requirements Specifications Approaches

    Numerous software requirements specification (SRS) approaches have been proposed in software engineering. However, there has been little empirical evaluation of the use of these approaches in specific contexts. This paper describes the results of a mapping study, a key instrument of the evidence-based paradigm, in an effort to understand what aspects of SRS are evaluated, in which context, and by using which research method. On the basis of 46 identified and categorized primary studies, we found that understandability is the most commonly evaluated aspect of SRS, experiments are the most commonly used research method, and the academic environment is where most empirical evaluation takes place

    An improved firefly algorithm for optimal microgrid operation with renewable energy

    Lately, an electrical network in microgrid system becomes very important to rural or remote areas without connection from primary power grid system. Higher cost of fuels, logistic, spare parts and maintenance affect the cost for operation microgrid generation to supply electrical power for remote areas and rural community. This project proposes an Improved Firefly Algorithm (IFA), which is a improvement of classical Firefly Algorithm (FA) technique using characteristic approach of LĂ©vy flights to solve the optimal microgrid operation. The IFA has been used for optimizing the cost of power generation in microgrid system where daily power balance constraints and generation limits are considered. The microgrid system for this case study considered both of renewable energy plant and conventional generator units. There are two test systems that have been considered as case study. The first test system is a simple microgrid system which consists of three generators. The second test system consists of seven generating units including two wind turbines, three fuel-cell plants and two diesel generators. The IFA method has been implemented using MATLAB software. The results obtained by IFA was compared to FA and other algorithms based on optimal cost, convergence characteristics and robustness to validate the effectiveness of the IFA. It shows that the IFA obtained better results in terms of operating costs compared to FA, Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA)

    Using Quantitative Methods as Support for Audit of the Distributed Informatics Systems

    This paper highlights some issues regarding how an indicators system must be developed and used in an audit process. Distributed systems are presented from de points of view of their main properties, architectures, applications, software quality characteristics and the scope of audit process in such systems. The audit process is defined in accordance to standard ISO 19011 and the main characteristics of this process are highlighted. Before using quantitative methods in audit processes, the framework in which the indicators are built must be defined. There are presented types of indicators used in audit process and classes of measurement scale. An audit process is carried out on different levels and support indicators must be in accordance to audit object.
