    FRAMEWORK FOR IMPROVING PERFORMANCE OF PROTOCOLS FOR READING RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION TAGS

    Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) is a highly sought-after wireless technology used to track and manage inventory in the supply chain industry. It has varied applications ranging from automated toll collection and security access management to supply chain logistics. Miniaturization and low tag costs of RFID tags have lead to item-level tagging, where not just the pallet holding products is tagged but each product inside has a tag attached to it. Item-level tagging of goods improves the accuracy of the supply chain but it significantly increases the number of tags that an RFID reader must identify and track. Faster identification is crucial to cutting cost and improving efficiency. Existing RFID protocols were designed to primarily handle static scenarios with both RFID tags and readers not being in motion. This research addresses the problem of inventory tracking within a warehouse in multitude of scenarios that involves mobile tags, multiple readers and high density environments. Mobility models are presented and frameworks are developed for the following scenarios: a) mobile tags on a conveyor belt with multiple fixed readers; b) mobile reader in a warehouse with stationary tags in shelves; and c) high density tag population with Near-Field (NF) communication. The proposed frameworks use information sharing among readers to facilitate protocol state handoff and segregation of tags into virtual zones to improve tag reading rates in mobile tag and mobile reader scenarios respectively. Further, a tag’s ability to listen to its Near-Field neighboring tags transmissions is exploited to assist the reader in resolving collisions and hence enhancing throughput. The frameworks discussed in this research are mathematically modeled with a probabilistic analysis of protocols employed in conjunction with framework. With an increased number of tags to be identified, mathematically understanding the performance of the protocol in these large-scale RFID systems becomes essential. Typically, this analysis is performed using Markov-chain models. However, these analyses suffer from the common state-space explosion problem. Hence, it is essential to come up with a scalable analysis, whose computation model is insensitive to the number of tags. The following research analyzes the performance of tag identification protocols in highly dense tag scenarios, and proposes an empirical formula to estimate the approximate time required to read all the tags in a readers range without requiring protocol execution

    Building efficient wireless infrastructures for pervasive computing environments

    Pervasive computing is an emerging concept that thoroughly brings computing devices and the consequent technology into people\u27s daily life and activities. Most of these computing devices are very small, sometimes even invisible , and often embedded into the objects surrounding people. In addition, these devices usually are not isolated, but networked with each other through wireless channels so that people can easily control and access them. In the architecture of pervasive computing systems, these small and networked computing devices form a wireless infrastructure layer to support various functionalities in the upper application layer.;In practical applications, the wireless infrastructure often plays a role of data provider in a query/reply model, i.e., applications issue a query requesting certain data and the underlying wireless infrastructure is responsible for replying to the query. This dissertation has focused on the most critical issue of efficiency in designing such a wireless infrastructure. In particular, our problem resides in two domains depending on different definitions of efficiency. The first definition is time efficiency, i.e., how quickly a query can be replied. Many applications, especially real-time applications, require prompt response to a query as the consequent operations may be affected by the prior delay. The second definition is energy efficiency which is extremely important for the pervasive computing devices powered by batteries. Above all, our design goal is to reply to a query from applications quickly and with low energy cost.;This dissertation has investigated two representative wireless infrastructures, sensor networks and RFID systems, both of which can serve applications with useful information about the environments. We have comprehensively explored various important and representative problems from both algorithmic and experimental perspectives including efficient network architecture design and efficient protocols for basic queries and complicated data mining queries. The major design challenges of achieving efficiency are the massive amount of data involved in a query and the extremely limited resources and capability each small device possesses. We have proposed novel and efficient solutions with intensive evaluation. Compared to the prior work, this dissertation has identified a few important new problems and the proposed solutions significantly improve the performance in terms of time efficiency and energy efficiency. Our work also provides referrable insights and appropriate methodology to other similar problems in the research community

    Reliable Communication in Wireless Networks

    Wireless communication systems are increasingly being used in industries and infrastructures since they offer significant advantages such as cost effectiveness and scalability with respect to wired communication system. However, the broadcast feature and the unreliable links in the wireless communication system may cause more communication collisions and redundant transmissions. Consequently, guaranteeing reliable and efficient transmission in wireless communication systems has become a big challenging issue. In particular, analysis and evaluation of reliable transmission protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and radio frequency identification system (RFID) are strongly required. This thesis proposes to model, analyze and evaluate self-configuration algorithms in wireless communication systems. The objective is to propose innovative solutions for communication protocols in WSNs and RFID systems, aiming at optimizing the performance of the algorithms in terms of throughput, reliability and power consumption. The first activity focuses on communication protocols in WSNs, which have been investigated, evaluated and optimized, in order to ensure fast and reliable data transmission between sensor nodes. The second research topic addresses the interference problem in RFID systems. The target is to evaluate and develop precise models for accurately describing the interference among readers. Based on these models, new solutions for reducing collision in RFID systems have been investigated

    A survey of RFID readers anticollision protocols

    International audienceWhile RFID technology is gaining increased attention from industrial community deploying different RFID-based applications, it still suffers from reading collisions. As such, many proposals were made by the scientific community to try and alleviate that issue using different techniques either centralized or distributed, monochannel or multichannels, TDMA or CSMA. However, the wide range of solutions and their diversity make it hard to have a clear and fair overview of the different works. This paper surveys the most relevant and recent known state-of-the-art anti-collision for RFID protocols. It provides a classification and performance evaluation taking into consideration different criteria as well as a guide to choose the best protocol for given applications depending on their constraints or requirements but also in regard to their deployment environments

    The thesis considers determination of location of sensors and users in smart environments using measurements of Received Signal Strength (RSS). The first part of the thesis focuses on localization in Wireless Sensor Networks and contributes two fully distributed algorithms which address the Sensor Selection Problem and provide the best trade-off between energy consumption and localization accuracy among the algorithms considered. Furthermore, the thesis contributes to Device Free Localization an indoor localization concept providing scalable and highly accurate location estimates (prototype: 0.36m² MSE) while using a COTS passive RFID-System and not relying on user-carried sensors

    Asset tracking often necessitates wireless, radio-frequency identification (RFID). In practice, situations often arise where plain inventory operations are not sufficient, and methods to estimate movement trajectory are needed for making reliable observations, classification and report generation. In this thesis, an embedded software application for an industrial, resource-constrained off-the-shelf RFID reader device in the UHF frequency range is designed and implemented. The software is used to configure the reader and its air-interface operations, accumulate read reports and generate events to be reported over network connections. Integrating location estimation methods to the application facilitates the possibility to make deploying middleware RFID solutions more streamlined and robust while reducing network bandwidth requirements. The result of this thesis is a functional embedded software application running on top of an embedded Linux distribution on an ARM processor. The reader software is used commercially in industrial and logistics applications. Non-linear state estimation features are applied, and their performance is evaluated in empirical experiments.Tavaroiden seuranta edellyttää usein langatonta radiotaajuustunnistustekniikkaa (RFID). Käytännön sovelluksissa tulee monesti tilanteita joissa pelkkä inventointi ei riitä, vaan tarvitaan menetelmiä liikeradan estimointiin luotettavien havaintojen ja luokittelun tekemiseksi sekä raporttien generoimiseksi. Tässä työssä on suunniteltu ja toteutettu sulautettu ohjelmistosovellus teolliseen, resursseiltaan rajoitettuun ja kaupallisesti saatavaan UHF-taajuusalueen RFID-lukijalaitteeseen. Ohjelmistoa käytetään lukijalaitteen ja sen ilmarajapinnan toimintojen konfigurointiin, lukutapahtumien keräämiseen ja raporttien lähettämiseen verkkoyhteyksiä pitkin. Paikkatiedon estimointimenetelmien integroiminen ohjelmistoon mahdollistaa välitason RFID-sovellusten toteuttamisen aiempaa suoraviivaisemin ja luotettavammin, vähentäen samalla vaatimuksia tietoverkon kaistanleveydelle. Työn tuloksena on toimiva sulautettu ohjelmistosovellus, jota ajetaan sulautetussa Linux-käyttöjärjestelmässä ARM-arkkitehtuurilla. Lukijaohjelmistoa käytetään kaupallisesti teollisuuden ja logistiikan sovelluskohteissa. Epälineaarisia estimointiominaisuuksia hyödynnetään, ja niiden toimivuutta arvioidaan empiirisin kokein

    Wireless Localization Systems: Statistical Modeling and Algorithm Design

    Wireless localization systems are essential for emerging applications that rely on context-awareness, especially in civil, logistic, and security sectors. Accurate localization in indoor environments is still a challenge and triggers a fervent research activity worldwide. The performance of such systems relies on the quality of range measurements gathered by processing wireless signals within the sensors composing the localization system. Such range estimates serve as observations for the target position inference. The quality of range estimates depends on the network intrinsic properties and signal processing techniques. Therefore, the system design and analysis call for the statistical modeling of range information and the algorithm design for ranging, localization and tracking. The main objectives of this thesis are: (i) the derivation of statistical models and (ii) the design of algorithms for different wire- less localization systems, with particular regard to passive and semi-passive systems (i.e., active radar systems, passive radar systems, and radio frequency identification systems). Statistical models for the range information are derived, low-complexity algorithms with soft-decision and hard-decision are proposed, and several wideband localization systems have been analyzed. The research activity has been conducted also within the framework of different projects in collaboration with companies and other universities, and within a one-year-long research period at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA. The analysis of system performance, the derived models, and the proposed algorithms are validated considering different case studies in realistic scenarios and also using the results obtained under the aforementioned projects
