Development of an experiment-based robust design paradigm for multiple quality characteristics using physical programming
The well-known quality improvement methodology, robust design, is a powerful and cost-effective technique for building quality into the design of products and processes. Although several approaches to robust design have been proposed in the literature, little attention has been given to the development of a flexible robust design model. Specifically, flexibility is needed in order to consider multiple quality characteristics simultaneously, just as customers do when judging products, and to capture design preferences with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Physical programming, a relatively new optimization technique, is an effective tool that can be used to transform design preferences into specific weighted objectives. In this paper, we extend the basic concept of physical programming to robust design by establishing the links of experimental design and response surface methodology to address designers’ preferences in a multiresponse robust design paradigm. A numerical example is used to show the proposed procedure and the results obtained are validated through a sensitivity study
Robust Multi-Objective Sustainable Reverse Supply Chain Planning: An Application in the Steel Industry
In the design of the supply chain, the use of the returned products and their recycling in the production and consumption network is called reverse logistics. The proposed model aims to optimize the flow of materials in the supply chain network (SCN), and determine the amount and location of facilities and the planning of transportation in conditions of demand uncertainty. Thus, maximizing the total profit of operation, minimizing adverse environmental effects, and maximizing customer and supplier service levels have been considered as the main objectives. Accordingly, finding symmetry (balance) among the profit of operation, the environmental effects and customer and supplier service levels is considered in this research. To deal with the uncertainty of the model, scenario-based robust planning is employed alongside a meta-heuristic algorithm (NSGA-II) to solve the model with actual data from a case study of the steel industry in Iran. The results obtained from the model, solving and validating, compared with actual data indicated that the model could optimize the objectives seamlessly and determine the amount and location of the necessary facilities for the steel industry more appropriately. This article belongs to the Special Issue Uncertain Multi-Criteria Optimization Problem

Optimized multi-objective design of herringbone micromixers
This paper was presented at the 2nd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2009), which was held at Brunel University, West London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IPEM, the Italian Union of Thermofluid dynamics, the Process Intensification Network, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.A design method which systematically integrates Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) with an optimization scheme based on the use of the techniques Design of Experiments (DOE), Function Approximation technique (FA) and Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), has been applied to the shape optimization of the staggered herringbone micromixer (SHM) at different Reynolds numbers. To quantify the mixing intensity in the mixer a Mixing index is defined on the basis of the intensity of segregation of the mass concentration on the outlet section. Four geometric parameters, i.e., aspect ratio of the mixing channel, ratio of groove depth to channel height, ratio of groove width to groove pitch and the asymmetry factor (offset) of groove, are the design variables selected for optimization. The mixing index at the outlet section and the pressure drop in the mixing channel are the performance criteria used as objective functions. The Pareto front with the optimum trade-offs, maximum mixing index with minimum pressure drop, is obtained. Experiments for qualitative and quantitative validation have been implemented. This study is supported by the Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award (DHPA) of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of United Kingdom and Ebara Research Co. Comparison of Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms for FM-TV Broadcasting Antenna Array Null Filling
Broadcasting antenna array null filling is a very
challenging problem for antenna design optimization. This paper
compares five antenna design optimization algorithms (Differential
Evolution, Particle Swarm, Taguchi, Invasive Weed, Adaptive
Invasive Weed) as solutions to the antenna array null filling
problem. The algorithms compared are evolutionary algorithms
which use mechanisms inspired by biological evolution, such as
reproduction, mutation, recombination, and selection. The focus of
the comparison is given to the algorithm with the best results,
nevertheless, it becomes obvious that the algorithm which produces
the best fitness (Invasive Weed Optimization) requires very
substantial computational resources due to its random search

RF-MEMS switch actuation pulse optimization using Taguchi's method
Copyright @ 2011 Springer-VerlagReliability and longevity comprise two of the most important concerns when designing micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) switches. Forcing the switch to perform close to its operating limits underlies a trade-off between response bandwidth and fatigue life due to the impact force of the cantilever touching its corresponding contact point. This paper presents for first time an actuation pulse optimization technique based on Taguchi’s optimization method to optimize the shape of the actuation pulse of an ohmic RF-MEMS switch in order to achieve better control and switching conditions. Simulation results show significant reduction in impact velocity (which results in less than 5 times impact force than nominal step pulse conditions) and settling time maintaining good switching speed for the pull down phase and almost elimination of the high bouncing phenomena during the release phase of the switch
Orthogonal-Array based Design Methodology for Complex, Coupled Space Systems
The process of designing a complex system, formed by many elements and sub-elements interacting between each other, is usually completed at a system level and in the preliminary phases in two major steps: design-space exploration and optimization. In a classical approach, especially in a company environment, the two steps are usually performed together, by experts of the field inferring on major phenomena, making assumptions and doing some trial-and-error runs on the available mathematical models. To support designers and decision makers during the design phases of this kind of complex systems, and to enable early discovery of emergent behaviours arising from interactions between the various elements being designed, the authors implemented a parametric methodology for the design-space exploration and optimization. The parametric technique is based on the utilization of a particular type of matrix design of experiments, the orthogonal arrays. Through successive design iterations with orthogonal arrays, the optimal solution is reached with a reduced effort if compared to more computationally-intense techniques, providing sensitivity and robustness information. The paper describes the design methodology in detail providing an application example that is the design of a human mission to support a lunar base
Population Based Metaheuristic Algorithm Approach for Analysis of Multi-Item Multi-Period Procurement Lot Sizing Problem
This research study focuses on the optimization of multi-item multi-period procurement lot sizing problem for inventory management. Mathematical model is developed which considers different practical constraints like storage space and budget. The aim is to find optimum order quantities of the product so that total cost of inventory is minimized. The NP-hard mathematical model is solved by adopting a novel ant colony optimization approach. Due to lack of benchmark method specified in the literature to assess the performance of the above approach, another metaheuristic based program of genetic algorithm is also employed to solve the problem. The parameters of genetic algorithm model are calibrated using Taguchi method of experiments. The performance of both algorithms is compared using ANOVA analysis with the real time data collected from a valve manufacturing company. It is verified that two methods have not shown any significant difference as far as objective function value is considered. But genetic algorithm is far better than the ACO method when compared on the basis of CPU execution time
A case study on Application of FUZZY logic in Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM)
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the most accurate manufacturing processes available for creating complex or simple shapes and geometries within parts and assemblies. EDM works by eroding material in the path of electrical discharges that form an arc between an electrode tool and the work piece. EDM manufacturing is quite affordable and a very desirable manufacturing process
when low counts or high accuracy is required. Turn around time can be fast and depends on manufacturer back log. The EDM system consists of a shaped tool or wire electrode, and the part. The part is connected to a power supply. Sometimes to create a potential difference between the work piece and tool, the work piece is immersed in a dielectric (electrically non-conducting) fluid which is circulated to flush away debris
