    Lexical database enrichment through semi-automated morphological analysis

    Derivational morphology proposes meaningful connections between words and is largely unrepresented in lexical databases. This thesis presents a project to enrich a lexical database with morphological links and to evaluate their contribution to disambiguation. A lexical database with sense distinctions was required. WordNet was chosen because of its free availability and widespread use. Its suitability was assessed through critical evaluation with respect to specifications and criticisms, using a transparent, extensible model. The identification of serious shortcomings suggested a portable enrichment methodology, applicable to alternative resources. Although 40% of the most frequent words are prepositions, they have been largely ignored by computational linguists, so addition of prepositions was also required. The preferred approach to morphological enrichment was to infer relations from phenomena discovered algorithmically. Both existing databases and existing algorithms can capture regular morphological relations, but cannot capture exceptions correctly; neither of them provide any semantic information. Some morphological analysis algorithms are subject to the fallacy that morphological analysis can be performed simply by segmentation. Morphological rules, grounded in observation and etymology, govern associations between and attachment of suffixes and contribute to defining the meaning of morphological relationships. Specifying character substitutions circumvents the segmentation fallacy. Morphological rules are prone to undergeneration, minimised through a variable lexical validity requirement, and overgeneration, minimised by rule reformulation and restricting monosyllabic output. Rules take into account the morphology of ancestor languages through co-occurrences of morphological patterns. Multiple rules applicable to an input suffix need their precedence established. The resistance of prefixations to segmentation has been addressed by identifying linking vowel exceptions and irregular prefixes. The automatic affix discovery algorithm applies heuristics to identify meaningful affixes and is combined with morphological rules into a hybrid model, fed only with empirical data, collected without supervision. Further algorithms apply the rules optimally to automatically pre-identified suffixes and break words into their component morphemes. To handle exceptions, stoplists were created in response to initial errors and fed back into the model through iterative development, leading to 100% precision, contestable only on lexicographic criteria. Stoplist length is minimised by special treatment of monosyllables and reformulation of rules. 96% of words and phrases are analysed. 218,802 directed derivational links have been encoded in the lexicon rather than the wordnet component of the model because the lexicon provides the optimal clustering of word senses. Both links and analyser are portable to an alternative lexicon. The evaluation uses the extended gloss overlaps disambiguation algorithm. The enriched model outperformed WordNet in terms of recall without loss of precision. Failure of all experiments to outperform disambiguation by frequency reflects on WordNet sense distinctions

    Automatic text summarisation using linguistic knowledge-based semantics

    Text summarisation is reducing a text document to a short substitute summary. Since the commencement of the field, almost all summarisation research works implemented to this date involve identification and extraction of the most important document/cluster segments, called extraction. This typically involves scoring each document sentence according to a composite scoring function consisting of surface level and semantic features. Enabling machines to analyse text features and understand their meaning potentially requires both text semantic analysis and equipping computers with an external semantic knowledge. This thesis addresses extractive text summarisation by proposing a number of semantic and knowledge-based approaches. The work combines the high-quality semantic information in WordNet, the crowdsourced encyclopaedic knowledge in Wikipedia, and the manually crafted categorial variation in CatVar, to improve the summary quality. Such improvements are accomplished through sentence level morphological analysis and the incorporation of Wikipedia-based named-entity semantic relatedness while using heuristic algorithms. The study also investigates how sentence-level semantic analysis based on semantic role labelling (SRL), leveraged with a background world knowledge, influences sentence textual similarity and text summarisation. The proposed sentence similarity and summarisation methods were evaluated on standard publicly available datasets such as the Microsoft Research Paraphrase Corpus (MSRPC), TREC-9 Question Variants, and the Document Understanding Conference 2002, 2005, 2006 (DUC 2002, DUC 2005, DUC 2006) Corpora. The project also uses Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) for the quantitative assessment of the proposed summarisers’ performances. Results of our systems showed their effectiveness as compared to related state-of-the-art summarisation methods and baselines.     An investigation into deviant morphology : issues in the implementation of a deep grammar for Indonesian

    This thesis investigates deviant morphology in Indonesian for the implementation of a deep grammar. In particular we focus on the implementation of the verbal suffix -kan. This suffix has been described as having many functions, which alter the kinds of arguments and the number of arguments the verb takes (Dardjowidjojo 1971; Chung 1976; Arka 1993; Vamarasi 1999; Kroeger 2007; Son and Cole 2008). Deep grammars or precision grammars (Butt et al. 1999a; Butt et al. 2003; Bender et al. 2011) have been shown to be useful for natural language processing (NLP) tasks, such as machine translation and generation (Oepen et al. 2004; Cahill and Riester 2009; Graham 2011), and information extraction (MacKinlay et al. 2012), demonstrating the need for linguistically rich information to aid NLP tasks. Although these linguistically-motivated grammars are invaluable resources to the NLP community, the biggest drawback is the time required for the manual creation and curation of the lexicon. Our work aims to expedite this process by applying methods to assign syntactic information to kan-affixed verbs automatically. The method we employ exploits the hypothesis that semantic similarity is tightly connected with syntactic behaviour (Levin 1993). Our endeavour in automatically acquiring verbal information for an Indonesian deep grammar poses a number of lingustic challenges. First of all Indonesian verbs exhibit voice marking that is characteristic of the subgrouping of its language family. In order to be able to characterise verbal behaviour in Indonesian, we first need to devise a detailed analysis of voice for implementation. Another challenge we face is the claim that all open class words in Indonesian, at least as it is spoken in some varieties (Gil 1994; Gil 2010), cannot linguistically be analysed as being distinct from each other. That is, there is no distiction between nouns, verbs or adjectives in Indonesian, and all word from the open class categories should be analysed uniformly. This poses difficulties in implementing a grammar in a linguistically motivated way, as well discovering syntactic behaviour of verbs, if verbs cannot be distinguished from nouns. As part of our investigation we conduct experiments to verify the need to employ word class categories, and we find that indeed these are linguistically motivated labels in Indonesian. Through our investigation into deviant morphological behaviour, we gain a better characterisation of the morphosyntactic effects of -kan, and we discover that, although Indonesian has been labelled as a language with no open word class distinctions, word classes can be established as being linguistically-motivated

    Every knowledge community has a distinct type of discourse and a linguistic identity which brings together the ideas of that discipline. These are expressed through characteristic linguistic realizations which are of considerable interest in the study of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) from many different perspectives. Despite the fact that ESP is a recent area of linguistic research, there is already a varied literature on academic and professional languages: English for law, business, computer and technology, advertising, marketing and engineering, just to mention a few. According to Dudley-Evans (1998:19), the development of ESP arose as a result of general improvements in the world economy in the 1960’s, along with the expansion of science and technology. Other relevant factors were the growing use of English as the international language of science, technology and business, and the increasing flow of exchange students to and from the UK, US and Australia
