    Komunikasi antara penyandang disabilitas dengan orang normal masih sulit bahkan dengan adanya bahasa isyarat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk pengembangan aplikasi “SAPA” berbasis Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) untuk efektivitas komunikasi antara tunarungu - tunanetra. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian pengembangan Research and Development (R & D). Penelitian pengembangan adalah model pengembangan sebuah produk dari mulai perancangan, validasi, pengujian produk, dan desiminasi produk secara luas. Tahapan pengembangan aplikasi pada penelitian ini meliputi; stdudi pendahuluan, perancangan produk, validasi produk, perbaikan produk, uji coba produk dan penyempurnaan produk final. Hasil pengujian aplikasi yang dilakukan didapatkan analisis yang berisi ouput Paired Samples Test menunjukkan nilai Sig.(2-tailed) adalah sebesar 0.000 < 0.05, maka H0 ditolak dan Ha diterima. Dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa, ada perbedaan rata – rata antara komunikasi mahasiswa pada saat sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan aplikasi “SAPA” yang artinya ada pengaruh pada penggunaan aplikasi “SAPA” untuk mengatasi masalah komunikasi mahasiswa tunarungu, tunanetra, non-disabilitas, dan dosen pengampu mata kuliah, sehingga tercipta komunikasi yang efektif dalam perkuliahan

    A New Direction in University. Teaching between Solidarity, Complexity and Media Education

    At the time of an abundance of media o ers and the reduced prestige of the institutions, teaching became strategic to maintaining and rede ning the authority and professional recognition of teachers. It has therefore become advisable to activate a process of self-re ection on the part of universities on the dimensions of didactic innovation and new demands placed on university professors, starting from the reformulation of the mission of the University of the ird Millennium. Areas in need of consideration include: educating to educate (old and new trends in the mode of transmission of knowledge, considering the continuous access to the contents and the new media and cultural behaviours of the students); educating towards an interdisciplinary perspective; educating towards internationalization; educating for integration and solidarity; educating to divulge the results of scienti c research, national and global problems and evolutions in terms of technology and human value; educating with and about the digital media. All these dimensions are explored in the paper, with particular a ention given to the multiple dimensions of Media Literacy for university teachers with regard to overcoming physical, cultural and generational barriers between teachers and students and to up-to-date and democratize the quality university education

Multiliteracies include not only reading and writing but also skills in sign language, drawing, acting, digitally mediated communication, and other modes. The book covers a variety of themes including learner engagement, classroom practice, capacity building, and education systems. Authors discuss aspects of learning such as the sequencing of different multiliteracies skills in the classroom, a gamified approach to English grammar, a sign-bilingual online environment, and the influence of visual materials on learners' participation. Capacity building with young deaf professionals and a comparative discussion of deaf education systems in three countries also feature in the volume. The book is of interest to both researchers and practitioners. In addition to four research chapters, it features four 'innovation sketches'. These are reports of innovative practices that have arisen in the context of the research, and they are particularly relevant for practitioners with an interest in methodologies

    Science education for deaf learners : educator perspectives and perceptions.

    Traditionally, the curriculum for deaf learners mainly involved language acquisition. The emphasis on academic subjects, such as science was marginal. In South Africa, the National Curriculum Statements (NCS) was introduced to redress the inequalities of the past education system. This research report is an investigation of science education for deaf learners. The study involved, firstly, exploring the experiences of educators that teach science to deaf learners and secondly, the identification of possible barriers that deaf learners experience in acquiring scientific knowledge, values and skills. Methodologically, this research project is located in the qualitative paradigm. The research participants comprised of five educators that teach science to deaf learners. The research sites were schools that cater for deaf learners, and are located in a province of South Africa. To gather data from the participants, the qualitative tools of interviews, field observations and artifact collection were utilized. Findings from the research indicate that there are intrinsic factors, such as literacy, sign language, cognition and motivation, and extrinsic factors, such as policy implementation, instructional strategies and resources that create barriers for deaf learners in science education. The participants’ suggestions that have emerged are also mentioned. Data obtained from the research provides valuable insight for deaf learners, educators that teach science to deaf learners and educational policy makers. The research report concludes with recommendations that could have implications for further research in the context of science education for deaf learners in South Africa

    Large-scale educational telecommunications systems for the US: An analysis of educational needs and technological opportunities

    The needs to be served, the subsectors in which the system might be used, the technology employed, and the prospects for future utilization of an educational telecommunications delivery system are described and analyzed. Educational subsectors are analyzed with emphasis on the current status and trends within each subsector. Issues which affect future development, and prospects for future use of media, technology, and large-scale electronic delivery within each subsector are included. Information on technology utilization is presented. Educational telecommunications services are identified and grouped into categories: public television and radio, instructional television, computer aided instruction, computer resource sharing, and information resource sharing. Technology based services, their current utilization, and factors which affect future development are stressed. The role of communications satellites in providing these services is discussed. Efforts to analyze and estimate future utilization of large-scale educational telecommunications are summarized. Factors which affect future utilization are identified. Conclusions are presented

    Sign language in South Africa: pedagogic approaches, policy developments and new directions

    This objective of this thesis is to present and critique sign language-in-education policy and different teaching pedagogies used by teachers in the Eastern and Western Cape Deaf schools. The research was conducted in four Deaf schools in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces. Data was collected through methods which include interviews, observations and questionnaires. The study results revealed that there was inconsistency of teaching approaches used by teachers in these different schools because some of them lacked knowledge and sign language skills. Additionally, many teachers who are teaching in Deaf schools did not get sign language training. Thus, the study concluded that some teachers lack knowledge of teaching methods. Also Deaf schools’ principals and school governing bodies employ teachers who are coming from the mainstream and who are not necessarily aware of Deaf children’s needs, forgetting that Deaf learners will struggle without suitable resources. Furthermore, the study concluded that teachers use different teaching approaches, such as Total Communication, Oral Approach, Signed English, Bilingualism, South African Sign Language (SASL) and other means of communication. Deaf learners were also forced to use Oral Communication although some of them were totally deaf. The research showed that Deaf learners and Deaf teacher assistants were not pleased about the way Deaf learners were being taught. Deaf learners complained about teachers, that they lack sign language communication skills and as a result the learners became the interpreters for the teachers. Teachers in turn complained about the curriculum training which was provided for individual and selected teachers. The research also offers a comparative study, in the sense that the development of sign language across different countries from Europe and Africa as well as the United States of America, is included. The thesis furthermore explores the development of SASL CAPS Curriculum in the Western Cape Province, i.e. grade R-3 which began in 2014 as opposed to the Eastern Cape teachers who experienced difficulties due to limited curriculum implementation resources. Therefore, this research suggests that, the Language Task Team which worked on the new CAPS curriculum should have involved Deaf teachers and teachers more generally in their team and decisions. The research sought to find a theoretical or grammatical basis for the development of SASL, while at the same time providing empirical data gathered from the four respective school sites. This data is analysed and presented in the thesis

    Implementation, use and analysis of open source learning management system “Moodle” and e-learning for the deaf in Jordan

    When learning mathematics, deaf children of primary school age experience difficulties due to their disability. In Jordan, little research has been undertaken to understand the problems facing deaf children and their teachers. Frequently, children are educated in special schools for the deaf; the majority of deaf children tend not to be integrated into mainstream education although efforts are made to incorporate them into the system. Teachers in the main stream education system rarely have knowledge and experience to enable deaf students to reach their full potential. The methodological approach used in this research is a mixed one consisting of action research and Human Computer interaction (HCI) research. The target group was deaf children aged nine years (at the third grade) and their teachers in Jordanian schools. Mathematics was chosen as the main focus of this study because it is a universal subject with its own concepts and rules and at this level the teachers in the school have sufficient knowledge and experience to teach mathematics topics competently. In order to obtain a better understanding of the problems faced by teachers and the deaf children in learning mathematics, semi-structured interviews were undertaken and questionnaires distributed to teachers. The main aim at that stage of research was to explore the current use and status of the e-learning environment and LMS within the Jordanian schools for the deaf in Jordan. In later stages of this research, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used again to ascertain the effectiveness, usability and readiness of the adopted e-learning environment “Moodle. Finally pre-tests and post-tests used to assess the effectiveness of the e-learning environment and LMS. It is important to note that it was not intended to work with the children directly but were used as test subjects. Based on the requirements and recommendations of the teachers of the deaf, a key requirements scheme was developed. Four open source e-learning environments and LMS evaluated against the developed key requirements. The evaluation was based on a software engineering approache. The outcome of that evaluation was the adoption of an open source e-learning environment and LMS called “Moodle”. Moodle was presented to the teachers for the purpose of testing it. It was found it is the most suitable e-learning environment and LMS to be adapted for use by deaf children in Jordan based on the teachers requirements. Then Moodle was presented to the deaf children’s to use during this research. After use, the activities of the deaf and their teachers were used and analysed in terms of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) analysis. The analysis includes the readiness, usability, user satisfaction, ease of use, learnability, outcome/future use, content, collaboration & communication tools and functionality
