Machine Learning in Wireless Sensor Networks: Algorithms, Strategies, and Applications
Wireless sensor networks monitor dynamic environments that change rapidly
over time. This dynamic behavior is either caused by external factors or
initiated by the system designers themselves. To adapt to such conditions,
sensor networks often adopt machine learning techniques to eliminate the need
for unnecessary redesign. Machine learning also inspires many practical
solutions that maximize resource utilization and prolong the lifespan of the
network. In this paper, we present an extensive literature review over the
period 2002-2013 of machine learning methods that were used to address common
issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The advantages and disadvantages of
each proposed algorithm are evaluated against the corresponding problem. We
also provide a comparative guide to aid WSN designers in developing suitable
machine learning solutions for their specific application challenges.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial
A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Security
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest in
the research community due their wide range of applications. Due to distributed
nature of these networks and their deployment in remote areas, these networks
are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their
proper functioning. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed
for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield.
Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios.
Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security
mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible
in WSNs. Security in sensor networks is, therefore, a particularly challenging
task. This paper discusses the current state of the art in security mechanisms
for WSNs. Various types of attacks are discussed and their countermeasures
presented. A brief discussion on the future direction of research in WSN
security is also included.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
A Cognitive Framework to Secure Smart Cities
The advancement in technology has transformed Cyber Physical Systems and their interface with IoT into a more sophisticated and challenging paradigm. As a result, vulnerabilities and potential attacks manifest themselves considerably more than before, forcing researchers to rethink the conventional strategies that are currently in place to secure such physical systems. This manuscript studies the complex interweaving of sensor networks and physical systems and suggests a foundational innovation in the field. In sharp contrast with the existing IDS and IPS solutions, in this paper, a preventive and proactive method is employed to stay ahead of attacks by constantly monitoring network data patterns and identifying threats that are imminent. Here, by capitalizing on the significant progress in processing power (e.g. petascale computing) and storage capacity of computer systems, we propose a deep learning approach to predict and identify various security breaches that are about to occur. The learning process takes place by collecting a large number of files of different types and running tests on them to classify them as benign or malicious. The prediction model obtained as such can then be used to identify attacks. Our project articulates a new framework for interactions between physical systems and sensor networks, where malicious packets are repeatedly learned over time while the system continually operates with respect to imperfect security mechanisms
Deep Predictive Coding Neural Network for RF Anomaly Detection in Wireless Networks
Intrusion detection has become one of the most critical tasks in a wireless
network to prevent service outages that can take long to fix. The sheer variety
of anomalous events necessitates adopting cognitive anomaly detection methods
instead of the traditional signature-based detection techniques. This paper
proposes an anomaly detection methodology for wireless systems that is based on
monitoring and analyzing radio frequency (RF) spectrum activities. Our
detection technique leverages an existing solution for the video prediction
problem, and uses it on image sequences generated from monitoring the wireless
spectrum. The deep predictive coding network is trained with images
corresponding to the normal behavior of the system, and whenever there is an
anomaly, its detection is triggered by the deviation between the actual and
predicted behavior. For our analysis, we use the images generated from the
time-frequency spectrograms and spectral correlation functions of the received
RF signal. We test our technique on a dataset which contains anomalies such as
jamming, chirping of transmitters, spectrum hijacking, and node failure, and
evaluate its performance using standard classifier metrics: detection ratio,
and false alarm rate. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed
methodology effectively detects many unforeseen anomalous events in real time.
We discuss the applications, which encompass industrial IoT, autonomous vehicle
control and mission-critical communications services.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, Communications Workshop ICC'1
Mass Removal of Botnet Attacks Using Heterogeneous Ensemble Stacking PROSIMA classifier in IoT
In an Internet of Things (IoT) environment, any object, which is equipped with sensor node and other electronic devices can involve in the communication over wireless network. Hence, this environment is highly vulnerable to Botnet attack. Botnet attack degrades the system performance in a manner difficult to get identified by the IoT network users. The Botnet attack is incredibly difficult to observe and take away in restricted time. there are challenges prevailed in the detection of Botnet attack due to number of reasons such as its unique structurally repetitive nature, performing non uniform and dissimilar activities and invisible nature followed by deleting the record of history. Even though existing mechanisms have taken action against the Botnet attack proactively, it has been observed failing to capture the frequent abnormal activities of Botnet attackers .When number of devices in the IoT environment increases, the existing mechanisms have missed more number of Botnet due to its functional complexity. So this type of attack is very complex in nature and difficult to identify. In order to detect Botnet attack, Heterogeneous Ensemble Stacking PROSIMA classifier is proposed. This takes advantage of cluster sampling in place of conventional random sampling for higher accuracy of prediction. The proposed classifier is tested on an experimental test setup with 20 nodes. The proposed approach enables mass removal of Botnet attack detection with higher accuracy that helps in the IoT environment to maintain the reliability of the entire network
