Information and Communication Technologies in Engineering Education
In the emerging digital era it is difficult to train highly-skilled, competent specialists without the use of information and communication technology (ICT). The use of ICT in education increases the motivation to learn, stimulates cognitive activity and independent work, facilitates information exchange, enables interactive communication between teachers and students, and improves learning outcomes. This paper reviews the literature regarding the use of ICTs in education, explores their advantages and challenges, and surveys first-year students at the Institute of Non-Destructive Testing, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University to determine their attitude toward ICT in foreign language learning

Collaborative learning at engineering universities: Benefits and challenges
This paper concerns the cutting edge educational approaches incorporated into syllabuses of the most progressive Russian higher technical schools. The authors discuss one of the active methods in teaching foreign languages β collaborative learning implemented in e-courses. Theoretical and historical aspects of this approach are addressed, as are its suitability for engineering education and possible ways of introducing collaborative learning into e-courses. Collaborative learning technology offers wide prospects for teachers of foreign languages as it enables the use of various patterns of interaction, promotes discussion, opinion exchange, peer assessment and building an e-learning community, fosters the development of e-culture and netiquette, and prepares future specialists for work in their professional sphere under the new conditions imposed by societyβs technological and cultural development. This paper describes real pedagogical experience of teaching English to students using the platform Moodle, focusing on the capacity of different Moodle instruments for designing group work tasks. Recommendations are given for their usage and the results of implementing a collaborative learning approach into certain e-courses offered at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) are presented
Learning English with the help of the e-learning course based on LMS MOODLE
The paper is devoted to the role of e-learning course "ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MODULE 3" developed by E. V. Shvagrukova for studying English. It highlights the structure of the course and the main principles of working with it. The knowledge and skills obtained by students with the help of this course are described. Also, the results of the student survey connected with their attitude towards the e-course are demonstrated. Complex Engineering Training as a Key Element of Higher Technical Education Development
Key aspects of higher education development are observed. Problems with scientific knowledge promotion are investigated. Important society living environments influenced on youth involvement in science, innovation and business activity are emphasized. The survey was carried out in the Tomsk Polytechnic University. The studentsβ survey findings showed the studentsβ attitude to business activity and Foresight strategy. A new technical studentsβ training model is suggested. Due to this model students can carry out complex business activity based on problem-oriented training on Foresight level. The aim of this model implementation is a training of competitive specialist with innovative way of thinking who has knowledge not only in the field of fundamental science but also in the field of management and business activity. The application importance of Foresight strategy and international education systems in future engineers training was justified. Results of engineersβ training in technical universities were presented and planned competences were formulated
Developing Translation Competence in Thermal Power Engineering Students
An engineering graduate today should be able to apply a variety of professional and the so-called deep learning competences including communication and translation competence. The paper gives a review of the notion of translation competence and presents key pre-requisites and creative tasks that enable thermal power engineering students of the National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia, develop and master translation competence
