    CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines

    Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    Minutes of the following Workshops: • National Initiatives on Multimedia Content Description and Retrieval, Geneva, October 10th, 2007. • Metadata in Audio-Visual/Multimedia production and archiving, Munich, IRT, 21st – 22nd November 2007 Workshop in Geneva 10/10/2007 This highly successful workshop was organised in cooperation with the European Commission. The event brought together the technical, administrative and financial representatives of the various national initiatives, which have been established recently in some European countries to support research and technical development in the area of audio-visual content processing, indexing and searching for the next generation Internet using semantic technologies, and which may lead to an internet-based knowledge infrastructure. The objective of this workshop was to provide a platform for mutual information and exchange between these initiatives, the European Commission and the participants. Top speakers were present from each of the national initiatives. There was time for discussions with the audience and amongst the European National Initiatives. The challenges, communalities, difficulties, targeted/expected impact, success criteria, etc. were tackled. This workshop addressed how these national initiatives could work together and benefit from each other. Workshop in Munich 11/21-22/2007 Numerous EU and national research projects are working on the automatic or semi-automatic generation of descriptive and functional metadata derived from analysing audio-visual content. The owners of AV archives and production facilities are eagerly awaiting such methods which would help them to better exploit their assets.Hand in hand with the digitization of analogue archives and the archiving of digital AV material, metadatashould be generated on an as high semantic level as possible, preferably fully automatically. All users of metadata rely on a certain metadata model. All AV/multimedia search engines, developed or under current development, would have to respect some compatibility or compliance with the metadata models in use.     Media aesthetics based multimedia storytelling.

    Since the earliest of times, humans have been interested in recording their life experiences, for future reference and for storytelling purposes. This task of recording experiences --i.e., both image and video capture-- has never before in history been as easy as it is today. This is creating a digital information overload that is becoming a great concern for the people that are trying to preserve their life experiences. As high-resolution digital still and video cameras become increasingly pervasive, unprecedented amounts of multimedia, are being downloaded to personal hard drives, and also uploaded to online social networks on a daily basis. The work presented in this dissertation is a contribution in the area of multimedia organization, as well as automatic selection of media for storytelling purposes, which eases the human task of summarizing a collection of images or videos in order to be shared with other people. As opposed to some prior art in this area, we have taken an approach in which neither user generated tags nor comments --that describe the photographs, either in their local or on-line repositories-- are taken into account, and also no user interaction with the algorithms is expected. We take an image analysis approach where both the context images --e.g. images from online social networks to which the image stories are going to be uploaded--, and the collection images --i.e., the collection of images or videos that needs to be summarized into a story--, are analyzed using image processing algorithms. This allows us to extract relevant metadata that can be used in the summarization process. Multimedia-storytellers usually follow three main steps when preparing their stories: first they choose the main story characters, the main events to describe, and finally from these media sub-groups, they choose the media based on their relevance to the story as well as based on their aesthetic value. Therefore, one of the main contributions of our work has been the design of computational models --both regression based, as well as classification based-- that correlate well with human perception of the aesthetic value of images and videos. These computational aesthetics models have been integrated into automatic selection algorithms for multimedia storytelling, which are another important contribution of our work. A human centric approach has been used in all experiments where it was feasible, and also in order to assess the final summarization results, i.e., humans are always the final judges of our algorithms, either by inspecting the aesthetic quality of the media, or by inspecting the final story generated by our algorithms. We are aware that a perfect automatically generated story summary is very hard to obtain, given the many subjective factors that play a role in such a creative process; rather, the presented approach should be seen as a first step in the storytelling creative process which removes some of the ground work that would be tedious and time consuming for the user. Overall, the main contributions of this work can be capitalized in three: (1) new media aesthetics models for both images and videos that correlate with human perception, (2) new scalable multimedia collection structures that ease the process of media summarization, and finally, (3) new media selection algorithms that are optimized for multimedia storytelling purposes.Postprint (published version

    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress.     Smartphone picture organization: a hierarchical approach

    We live in a society where the large majority of the population has a camera-equipped smartphone. In addition, hard drives and cloud storage are getting cheaper and cheaper, leading to a tremendous growth in stored personal photos. Unlike photo collections captured by a digital camera, which typically are pre-processed by the user who organizes them into event-related folders, smartphone pictures are automatically stored in the cloud. As a consequence, photo collections captured by a smartphone are highly unstructured and because smartphones are ubiquitous, they present a larger variability compared to pictures captured by a digital camera. To solve the need of organizing large smartphone photo collections automatically, we propose here a new methodology for hierarchical photo organization into topics and topic-related categories. Our approach successfully estimates latent topics in the pictures by applying probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis, and automatically assigns a name to each topic by relying on a lexical database. Topic-related categories are then estimated by using a set of topic-specific Convolutional Neuronal Networks. To validate our approach, we ensemble and make public a large dataset of more than 8,000 smartphone pictures from 40 persons.     Bridging semantic gap: learning and integrating semantics for content-based retrieval

    Digital cameras have entered ordinary homes and produced^incredibly large number of photos. As a typical example of broad image domain, unconstrained consumer photos vary significantly. Unlike professional or domain-specific images, the objects in the photos are ill-posed, occluded, and cluttered with poor lighting, focus, and exposure. Content-based image retrieval research has yet to bridge the semantic gap between computable low-level information and high-level user interpretation. In this thesis, we address the issue of semantic gap with a structured learning framework to allow modular extraction of visual semantics. Semantic image regions (e.g. face, building, sky etc) are learned statistically, detected directly from image without segmentation, reconciled across multiple scales, and aggregated spatially to form compact semantic index. To circumvent the ambiguity and subjectivity in a query, a new query method that allows spatial arrangement of visual semantics is proposed. A query is represented as a disjunctive normal form of visual query terms and processed using fuzzy set operators. A drawback of supervised learning is the manual labeling of regions as training samples. In this thesis, a new learning framework to discover local semantic patterns and to generate their samples for training with minimal human intervention has been developed. The discovered patterns can be visualized and used in semantic indexing. In addition, three new class-based indexing schemes are explored. The winnertake- all scheme supports class-based image retrieval. The class relative scheme and the local classification scheme compute inter-class memberships and local class patterns as indexes for similarity matching respectively. A Bayesian formulation is proposed to unify local and global indexes in image comparison and ranking that resulted in superior image retrieval performance over those of single indexes. Query-by-example experiments on 2400 consumer photos with 16 semantic queries show that the proposed approaches have significantly better (18% to 55%) average precisions than a high-dimension feature fusion approach. The thesis has paved two promising research directions, namely the semantics design approach and the semantics discovery approach. They form elegant dual frameworks that exploits pattern classifiers in learning and integrating local and global image semantics

    Detecting semantic concepts in digital photographs: low-level features vs. non-homogeneous data fusion

    Semantic concepts, such as faces, buildings, and other real world objects, are the most preferred instrument that humans use to navigate through and retrieve visual content from large multimedia databases. Semantic annotation of visual content in large collections is therefore essential if ease of access and use is to be ensured. Classification of images into broad categories such as indoor/outdoor, building/non-building, urban/landscape, people/no-people, etc., allows us to obtain the semantic labels without the full knowledge of all objects in the scene. Inferring the presence of high-level semantic concepts from low-level visual features is a research topic that has been attracting a significant amount of interest lately. However, the power of lowlevel visual features alone has been shown to be limited when faced with the task of semantic scene classification in heterogeneous, unconstrained, broad-topic image collections. Multi-modal fusion or combination of information from different modalities has been identified as one possible way of overcoming the limitations of single-mode approaches. In the field of digital photography, the incorporation of readily available camera metadata, i.e. information about the image capture conditions stored in the EXIF header of each image, along with the GPS information, offers a way to move towards a better understanding of the imaged scene. In this thesis we focus on detection of semantic concepts such as artificial text in video and large buildings in digital photographs, and examine how fusion of low-level visual features with selected camera metadata, using a Support Vector Machine as an integration device, affects the performance of the building detector in a genuine personal photo collection. We implemented two approaches to detection of buildings that combine content-based and the context-based information, and an approach to indoor/outdoor classification based exclusively on camera metadata. An outdoor detection rate of 85.6% was obtained using camera metadata only. The first approach to building detection, based on simple edge orientation-based features extracted at three different scales, has been tested on a dataset of 1720 outdoor images, with a classification accuracy of 88.22%. The second approach integrates the edge orientation-based features with the camera metadata-based features, both at the feature and at the decision level. The fusion approaches have been evaluated using an unconstrained dataset of 8000 genuine consumer photographs. The experiments demonstrate that the fusion approaches outperform the visual features-only approach by of 2-3% on average regardless of the operating point chosen, while all the performance measures are approximately 4% below the upper limit of performance.     Issues in Automatic Video Biography Editing are similar to those in Video Scene Detection and Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT). The techniques of Video Scene Detection and TDT can be applied to interviews to reduce the time necessary to edit a video biography. The system has attacked the problems of extraction of video text, story segmentation, and correlation. This thesis project was divided into three parts: extraction, scene detection, and correlation.
