The basic criteria are functional reliability of 10 to the minus 10 power/hour of flight and only 6 month scheduled maintenance.     A Survey of Health Management User Objectives Related to Diagnostic and Prognostic Metrics

    One of the most prominent technical challenges to effective deployment of health management systems is the vast difference in user objectives with respect to engineering development. In this paper, a detailed survey on the objectives of different users of health management systems is presented. These user objectives are then mapped to the metrics typically encountered in the development and testing of two main systems health management functions: diagnosis and prognosis. Using this mapping, the gaps between user goals and the metrics associated with diagnostics and prognostics are identified and presented with a collection of lessons learned from previous studies that include both industrial and military aerospace applications

    Predictive model for the degradation state of a hydraulic system with dimensionality reduction

    In recent years, the optimization in the use of resources has a key role in achieving a bigger marginality, reducing the operative costs. Due to the advances in the data science field, even the maintenance context is living important changes. The predictive maintenance and the condition-based maintenance can overcome the classic traditional maintenance methods, like the time-based maintenance or the corrective maintenance, with respect to the first intervention, reducing the costs for unscheduled maintenance, manpower, or loss of production and extending the useful life of the components. Based on these presuppositions, the paper proposes the development of a predictive model for the degradation state of the components of a complex hydraulic system, with some tests and some suggestions about the dimensionality reduction. The system has four known types of breakdown, with different degrees of severity; moreover, a fifth parameter represents whether the cycle has reached stable conditions or not

    Electronic/electric technology benefits study

    The benefits and payoffs of advanced electronic/electric technologies were investigated for three types of aircraft. The technologies, evaluated in each of the three airplanes, included advanced flight controls, advanced secondary power, advanced avionic complements, new cockpit displays, and advanced air traffic control techniques. For the advanced flight controls, the near term considered relaxed static stability (RSS) with mechanical backup. The far term considered an advanced fly by wire system for a longitudinally unstable airplane. In the case of the secondary power systems, trades were made in two steps: in the near term, engine bleed was eliminated; in the far term bleed air, air plus hydraulics were eliminated. Using three commercial aircraft, in the 150, 350, and 700 passenger range, the technology value and pay-offs were quantified, with emphasis on the fiscal benefits. Weight reductions deriving from fuel saving and other system improvements were identified and the weight savings were cycled for their impact on TOGW (takeoff gross weight) and upon the performance of the airframes/engines.     Bayesian Network Analysis for Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems

    Bayesian networks have been applied to many different domains to perform prognostics, reduce risk and ultimately improve decision making. However, these methods have not been applied to military field and human performance data sets in an industrial environment. Methods frequently rely on a clear understanding of causal connections leading to an undesirable event and detailed understanding of the system behavior. Methods may also require large amount of analyst teams and domain experts, coupled with manual data cleansing and classification. The research performed utilized machine learning algorithms (such as Bayesian networks) and two existing data sets. The primary objective of the research was to develop a diagnostic and prognostic tool utilizing Bayesian networks that does not require the need for detailed causal understanding of the underlying system. The research yielded a predictive method with substantial benefits over reactive methods. The research indicated Bayesian networks can be trained and utilized to predict failure of several important components to include potential malfunction codes and downtime on a real-world Navy data set. The research also considered potential error within the training data set. The results provided credence to utilization of Bayesian networks in real field data – which will always contain error that is not easily quantified. Research should be replicated with additional field data sets from other aircraft. Future research should be conducted to solicit and incorporate domain expertise into subsequent models. Research should also consider incorporation of text based analytics for text fields, which was considered out of scope for this research project

    The role of the Langley Research Center is to perform basic and applied research necessary for the advancement of aeronautics and space flight, to generate new and advanced concepts for the accomplishment of related national goals, and to provide research advice, technological support, and assistance to other NASA installations, other government agencies, and industry. Significant tests which were performed during calendar year 1985 in Langley test facilities, are highlighted. Both the broad range of the research and technology activities at the Langley Research Center and the contributions of this work toward maintaining United States leadership in aeronautics and space research, are illustrated.     CONDITION-BASED UNMANNED UNDERSEA VEHICLE MAINTENANCE MONITORING AND PREDICTION SYSTEM (C-BUMMPS)

    As the Navy introduces its large displacement and extra-large class Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs), the need and desire grows for increased endurance on the order of weeks to months. Extended endurance is a necessary capability to enable UUVs to take on some of the mission areas of nuclear submarines. Energy efficiency and storage capacity are some of the first factors to be considered for extending the endurance of unmanned vehicles. However, a secondary and more challenging factor is UUV system reliability, and the ability to tolerate or avoid system failures. The intent of this project is to capture the stakeholder needs for improving UUV reliability, maintainability, and availability, then transform those needs into system requirements for a Condition-Based UUV Maintenance Monitoring and Prediction System (C-BUMMPS). Specifically, this project will develop and identify stakeholder, system functional, and system non-functional requirements. A C-BUMMPS architecture is developed to address the stakeholders’ needs. The developed architecture will consist of on-board sensing, monitoring, and processing elements on the UUV, in addition to ashore testing, data analytics, and maintenance activities needed to support the maturation of the C-BUMMPS. This project will utilize a model based systems engineering (MBSE) approach, and Innoslate was chosen as the desired MBSE tool.     Aircraft cabin water spray disbenefits study

    The concept of utilizing a cabin water spray system (CWSS) as a means of increasing passenger evacuation and survival time following an accident has received considerable publicity and has been the subject of testing by the regulatory agencies in both the United States and Europe. A test program, initiated by the CAA in 1987, involved the regulatory bodies in both Europe and North America in a collaborative research effort to determine the benefits and 'disbenefits' (disadvantages) of a CWSS. In order to obtain a balanced opinion of an onboard CWSS, NASA, and FAA requested the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group to investigate the potential 'disbenefits' of the proposed system from the perspective of the manufacturer and an operator. This report is the result of a year-long, cost-sharing contract study between the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, NASA, and FAA. Delta Air Lines participated as a subcontract study team member and investigated the 'return to service' costs for an aircraft that would experience an uncommanded operation of a CWSS without the presence of fire. Disbenefits identified include potential delays in evacuation, introduction of 'common cause failure' in redundant safety of flight systems, physiological problems for passengers, high cost of refurbishment for inadvertent discharge, and potential to negatively affect other safety systems
