    Using cultural probes to inform the design of assistive technologies

    This paper discusses the practical implications of applying cultural probes to drive the design of assistive technologies. Specifically we describe a study in which a probe was deployed with home-based carers of people with dementia in order to capture critical data and gain insights of integrating the technologies into this sensitive and socially complex design space.     Designing assisted living technologies 'in the wild' : preliminary experiences with cultural probe methodology

    Background There is growing interest in assisted living technologies to support independence at home. Such technologies should ideally be designed ā€˜in the wildā€™ i.e. taking account of how real people live in real homes and communities. The ATHENE (Assistive Technologies for Healthy Living in Elders: Needs Assessment by Ethnography) project seeks to illuminate the living needs of older people and facilitate the co-production with older people of technologies and services. This paper describes the development of a cultural probe tool produced as part of the ATHENE project and how it was used to support home visit interviews with elders with a range of ethnic and social backgrounds, family circumstances, health conditions and assisted living needs. Method Thirty one people aged 60 to 98 were visited in their homes on three occasions. Following an initial interview, participants were given a set of cultural probe materials, including a digital camera and the ā€˜Home and Life Scrapbookā€™ to complete in their own time for one week. Activities within the Home and Life Scrapbook included maps (indicating their relationships to people, places and objects), lists (e.g. likes, dislikes, things they were concerned about, things they were comfortable with), wishes (things they wanted to change or improve), body outline (indicating symptoms or impairments), home plan (room layouts of their homes to indicate spaces and objects used) and a diary. After one week, the researcher and participant reviewed any digital photos taken and the content of the Home and Life Scrapbook as part of the home visit interview. Findings The cultural probe facilitated collection of visual, narrative and material data by older people, and appeared to generate high levels of engagement from some participants. However, others used the probe minimally or not at all for various reasons including limited literacy, physical problems (e.g. holding a pen), lack of time or energy, limited emotional or psychological resources, life events, and acute illness. Discussions between researchers and participants about the materials collected (and sometimes about what had prevented them completing the tasks) helped elicit further information relevant to assisted living technology design. The probe materials were particularly helpful when having conversations with non-English speaking participants through an interpreter. Conclusions Cultural probe methods can help build a rich picture of the lives and experiences of older people to facilitate the co-production of assisted living technologies. But their application may be constrained by the participantā€™s physical, mental and emotional capacity. They are most effective when used as a tool to facilitate communication and development of a deeper understanding of older peopleā€™s needs

    ATHENE : Assistive technologies for healthy living in elders : needs assessment by ethnography

    Numerous assistive technologies to support independent living ā€“including personal alarms, mobile phones, self-monitoring devices, mobility aids, software apps and home adaptations ā€“have been developed over the years, but their uptake by older people, especially those from minority ethnic groups, is poor. This paper outlines the ways in which the ATHENE project seeks to redress this situation by producing a richer understanding of the complex and diverse living experiences and care needs of older people and exploring how industry, the NHS, social services and third sector can work with the older people themselves to ā€˜co-produceā€™ useful and useable ALT designs to meet their needs. In this paper, we provide an overview of the project methodology and discuss some of the issues it raises for the design and development process

    Living with the user: Design drama for dementia care through responsive scripted experiences in the home

    Participation in forms of drama and narrative can provoke empathy and creativity in user-centred design processes. In this paper, we expand upon existing methods to explore the potential for responsive scripted experiences that are delivered through the combination of sensors and output devices placed in a home. The approach is being developed in the context of Dementia care, where the capacity for rich user participation in design activities is limited. In this case, a system can act as a proxy for a person with Dementia, allowing designers to gain experiences and insight as to what it is like to provide care for, and live with, this person.     Crazy ideas or creative probes?: presenting critical artefacts to stakeholders to develop innovative product ideas

    A number of design practices derive from and develop the notion of critical theory. Notable developers of such ā€œcritical design practicesā€ are Dunne &amp; Raby with ā€œcritical designā€, Sengers and colleagues at Cornell University's Culturally Embedded Computing Group with ā€œreflective designā€, and Agre with ā€œcritical technical practiceā€ within artificial intelligence research. And there are an increasing number of designers who, whilst not specifically explicating their theoretical ancestry, include critical elements in their products. The reflection afforded by the products of critical design is generally seen as its endpoint. However I have used this reflection instrumentally within human-centred design activities. ā€œCritical artefactsā€ have proved more useful as tools than direct questioning techniques; in particular as a way of enabling stakeholders to engage with novel situations and consequently engage in creative thinking about future possibilities. This paper begins with a review of critical design practices. Two case studies are then detailed demonstrating my approach. A discussion of the commonalities and differences between critical design practices follows noting their relationship to critical social theory and the relationship of my work to them. Finally further research to develop generalisable methods is outlined.</p

    Painting the ideal home: using art to express visions of technologically supported independent living for older people in North East England

    This paper describes the investigation of the development of future technological products to support older people in everyday living through the agency of a community art group. Recent research has identified a number of challenges facing designers seeking to use traditional participatory design approaches to gather technology requirements data from older people. Here, a project is described that sought to get a group of older people to think creatively about their needs and desires for technological support through the medium of paint. The artistic expression technique described in this article allowed the identification of issues that had also been found by previous research that used a range of different techniques. This indicates that the approach shows promise, as it allows information to be gathered in an environment that is comfortable and familiar using methods already known by the participants and which they find enjoyable. It provides a complement (or possible alternative) to standard protocols and has the potential benefit of extracting even richer information as the primary task for participants is enjoyable in its own right and is not associated with an interrogative process. Furthermore, it is argued that some of the key risks of traditional approaches are lessened or removed by the naturalistic setting of this approach

    Empathy in the design of assistive devices for older adults: An exploratory study with Portuguese women

    Assistive Devices (AD) aim to enhance the autonomy of their users, among whom are older adults. However, older adults often have negative feelings towards these products, such as the fear of dependence, which in turn influence their acceptance and use. These feelings can result from the use of design approaches that focus merely on usersā€™ physical abilities. This article argues for the importance of rethinking approaches to the design of AD by focusing on a holistic and empathic view of older people. It also seeks to contribute to a richer understanding of what independence and dependence means to older people. This article describes an exploratory study with eleven older women, living in two distinct contexts in the north of Portugal ā€“ rural and urban. The qualitative data that emerged from this research were used to develop five empirical personas, to provide a readily usable and useful tool for design

    ā€™Eyes freeā€™ in-car assistance: parent and child passenger collaboration during phone calls

    This paper examines routine family car journeys, looking specifically at how passengers assist during a mobile telephone call while the drivers address the competing demands of handling the vehicle, interacting with various artefacts and controls in the cabin, and engage in co-located and remote conversations while navigating through busy city roads. Based on an analysis of video fragments, we see how drivers and child passengers form their conversations and requests around the call so as to be meaningful and paced to the demands, knowledge and abilities of their cooccupants, and how the conditions of the road and emergent traffic are oriented to and negotiated in the context of the social interaction that they exist alongside. The study provides implications for the design of car-based collaborative media and considers how hands- and eyesfree natural interfaces could be tailored to the complexity of activities in the car and on the road
