    Comparison on OpenStack and OpenNebula performance to improve multi-Cloud architecture on cosmological simulation use case

    With the increasing numbers of Cloud Service Providers and the migration of the Grids to the Cloud paradigm, it is necessary to be able to leverage these new resources. Moreover, a large class of High Performance Computing (HPC) applications can run these resources without (or with minor) modifications. But using these resources come with the cost of being able to interact with these new resource providers. In this paper we introduce the design of a HPC middleware that is able to use resources coming from an environment that compose of multiple Clouds as well as classical \hpc resources. Using the \diet middleware, we are able to deploy a large-scale, distributed HPC platform that spans across a large pool of resources aggregated from different providers. Furthermore, we hide to the end users the difficulty and complexity of selecting and using these new resources even when new Cloud Service Providers are added to the pool. Finally, we validate the architecture concept through cosmological simulation RAMSES. Thus we give a comparison of 2 well-known Cloud Computing Software: OpenStack and OpenNebula.Avec l'augmentation du nombre de fournisseurs de service Cloud et la migration des applications depuis les grilles de calcul vers le Cloud, il est nécessaire de pouvoir tirer parti de ces nouvelles ressources. De plus, une large classe des applications de calcul haute performance peuvent s'exécuter sur ces ressources sans modifications (ou avec des modifications mineures). Mais utiliser ces ressources vient avec le coût d'être capable d'intéragir avec des nouveaux fournisseurs de ressources. Dans ce papier, nous introduisons la conception d'un nouveau intergiciel HPC qui permet d'utiliser les ressources qui proviennent d'un environement composé de plusieurs Clouds comme des ressources classiques. En utilisant l'intergiciel \diet, nous sommes capable de déployer une plateforme HPC distribuée et large échelle qui s'étend sur un large ensemble de ressources aggrégées entre plusieurs fournisseurs Cloud. De plus, nous cachons à l'utilisateur final la difficulté et la complexité de sélectionner et d'utiliser ces nouvelles ressources quand un nouveau fournisseur de service Cloud est ajouté dans l'ensemble. Finalement, nous validons notre concept d'architecture via une application de simulation cosmologique RAMSES. Et nous fournissons une comparaison entre 2 intergiciels de Cloud: OpenStack et OpenNebula

    Views and Experiences of New Zealand Women with Gestational Diabetes in Achieving Glycaemic Control Targets: The Views Study

    Introduction. Optimal glycaemic control in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) reduces maternal and infant morbidity. Method. A survey was administered to women diagnosed with GDM to explore their views and experiences in achieving optimal glycaemic control. Results. Sixty women participated. Enablers included being taught to test capillary blood glucose in group settings where the health professional demonstrated this on themselves first (60, 100%); health professionals listening (41, 68%); being reminded to perform blood glucose testing (33, 55%); and being provided healthy meals by friends and family (28, 47%). Barriers included not having information in a woman’s first language (33, 55%); being offered unhealthy food (19, 31%); not being believed by health professionals (13, 21%); receiving inconsistent information by health professionals (10, 16%); never being seen twice by the same health professional (8, 13%); and long waiting hours at clinics (7, 11%). Two-thirds of women (37, 62%) reported that food costs were not a barrier, but that they were always or frequently hungry. Conclusion. Optimising experiences for women with GDM for achieving glycaemic control and overcoming barriers, regardless of glycaemic targets, requires further focus on providing meaningful health literacy and support from health professionals, family, friends, and work colleague

    Evidence based or person centered? An ontological debate

    Evidence based medicine (EBM) is under critical debate, and person centered healthcare (PCH) has been proposed as an improvement. But is PCH offered as a supplement or as a replacement of EBM? Prima facie PCH only concerns the practice of medicine, while the contended features of EBM also include methods and medical model. I here argue that there are good philosophical reasons to see PCH as a radical alternative to the existing medical paradigm of EBM, since the two seem committed to conflicting ontologies. This paper aims to make explicit some of the most fundamental assumptions that motivate EBM and PCH, respectively, in order to show that the choice between them ultimately comes down to ontological preference. While EBM has a solid foundation in positivism, or what I here call Humeanism, PCH is more consistent with causal dispositionalism. I conclude that if there is a paradigmatic revolution on the way in medicine, it is first of all one of ontology

    All in one Graphical Tool for the management of DIET a GridRPC Middleware

    Also available as LIP Research Report 2008-24Grid Middleware are the link between large scale (and distributed) platforms and applications. Managing such a software system and the Grid environment itself can be a hard task when no dedicated (and integrated) tool exist. Some can be used through nice graphical interfaces, but they are usually dedicated to one or some limited tasks. They do not fulfill all the needs of a Grid end-user who wants to deploy Grid applications easily and rapidly. The aim of this paper is to present the case study of an all-in-one software system, designed for the management of a Grid Middleware and gathering user-friendly graphical interfaces answering to the various needs of end-users. Moreover the software system eases the use of the Grid by avoiding the scripting layer under a nice GUI enabling the user a faster and more efficient use of the Grid environment. By this means we demonstrate how the DietDashboard fulfills all the needs of a unified tool for Grid management. This paper gives a comparison with existing and well-known tools dedicated to some specific tasks such as Grid resources management, Grid monitoring, or Middleware management

    Attack-Surface Metrics, OSSTMM and Common Criteria Based Approach to “Composable Security” in Complex Systems

    In recent studies on Complex Systems and Systems-of-Systems theory, a huge effort has been put to cope with behavioral problems, i.e. the possibility of controlling a desired overall or end-to-end behavior by acting on the individual elements that constitute the system itself. This problem is particularly important in the “SMART” environments, where the huge number of devices, their significant computational capabilities as well as their tight interconnection produce a complex architecture for which it is difficult to predict (and control) a desired behavior; furthermore, if the scenario is allowed to dynamically evolve through the modification of both topology and subsystems composition, then the control problem becomes a real challenge. In this perspective, the purpose of this paper is to cope with a specific class of control problems in complex systems, the “composability of security functionalities”, recently introduced by the European Funded research through the pSHIELD and nSHIELD projects (ARTEMIS-JU programme). In a nutshell, the objective of this research is to define a control framework that, given a target security level for a specific application scenario, is able to i) discover the system elements, ii) quantify the security level of each element as well as its contribution to the security of the overall system, and iii) compute the control action to be applied on such elements to reach the security target. The main innovations proposed by the authors are: i) the definition of a comprehensive methodology to quantify the security of a generic system independently from the technology and the environment and ii) the integration of the derived metrics into a closed-loop scheme that allows real-time control of the system. The solution described in this work moves from the proof-of-concepts performed in the early phase of the pSHIELD research and enrich es it through an innovative metric with a sound foundation, able to potentially cope with any kind of pplication scenarios (railways, automotive, manufacturing, ...)
