Eye Tracking Support for Visual Analytics Systems
Visual analytics (VA) research provides helpful solutions for interactive visual data analysis when exploring large and complex datasets. Due to recent advances in eye tracking technology, promising opportunities arise to extend these traditional VA approaches. Therefore, we discuss foundations for eye tracking support in VA systems. We first review and discuss the structure and range of typical VA systems. Based on a widely used VA model, we present five comprehensive examples that cover a wide range of usage scenarios. Then, we demonstrate that the VA model can be used to systematically explore how concrete VA systems could be extended with eye tracking, to create supportive and adaptive analytics systems. This allows us to identify general research and application opportunities, and classify them into research themes. In a call for action, we map the road for future research to broaden the use of eye tracking and advance visual analytics
Examining the Effects of Personalized Explanations in a Multi-list Food Recommender System
In the past decade, food recipe websites have become a popular approach to find a recipe. Due to the vast amount of options, food recommender systems have been devel- oped and used to suggest appetizing recipes. However, recommending appealing meals does not necessarily imply that they are healthy. Recent studies on recommender sys- tems have demonstrated a growing interest in altering the interface, where the usage of multi-list interfaces with explanations has been explored earlier in an unsuccessful at- tempt to encourage healthier food choices. Building upon other research that highlights the ability of personalized explanations to provide a better understanding of presented recommendations, this thesis explores whether a multi-list interface with personalized explanations, which takes into account user preferences, health, and nutritional aspects, can affect users’ evaluation and perception of a food recommender system, as well as steer them towards healthier choices. A food recommender system was develop, with which single- and multi-lists, as well as non-personalized and personalized explana- tions, were compared in an online experiment (N = 163) in which participants were requested to choose recipes they liked and to answer questionnaires. The analysis re- vealed that personalized explanations in a multi-list interface were not able to increase choice satisfaction, choice difficulty, understanding or support healthier choices. Sur- prisingly, users selected healthier recipes if non-personalized rather than personalized explanations were presented alongside them. Getting the Most from Eye-Tracking: User-Interaction Based Reading Region Estimation Dataset and Models
A single digital newsletter usually contains many messages (regions). Users'
reading time spent on, and read level (skip/skim/read-in-detail) of each
message is important for platforms to understand their users' interests,
personalize their contents, and make recommendations. Based on accurate but
expensive-to-collect eyetracker-recorded data, we built models that predict
per-region reading time based on easy-to-collect Javascript browser tracking
data.
With eye-tracking, we collected 200k ground-truth datapoints on participants
reading news on browsers. Then we trained machine learning and deep learning
models to predict message-level reading time based on user interactions like
mouse position, scrolling, and clicking. We reached 27\% percentage error in
reading time estimation with a two-tower neural network based on user
interactions only, against the eye-tracking ground truth data, while the
heuristic baselines have around 46\% percentage error. We also discovered the
benefits of replacing per-session models with per-timestamp models, and adding
user pattern features. We concluded with suggestions on developing

User Efficiency Model in Usability Engineering for User Interface Design Refinement of Mobile Application
Designers are often confronted with challenges or difficulties when designing user interfaces for mobile applications. The information must be clearly delivered to the user and also have an aesthetic appearance and good discoverability. One widely used method for conveying information is directing user attention to a component that is related to his or her task. We propose a recommender system by considering user efficiency in a user attention model. It can give suggestions for designers to improve the appearance of the most efficient component. This recommender system is aimed to help designers in the iteration process of usability engineering, especially to direct user attention to the most efficient component. This system analyzes actual user attention and then refines the user interface based on the energy of each component compared with the baseline energy. Our proposed model successfully increased the efficiency of a mobile learning application from 83.65% to 85.58% and improved discoverability of the most efficient component, thus reducing the task completion time
Developing Persona Analytics Towards Persona Science
Much of the reported work on personas suffers from the lack of empirical evidence. To address this issue, we introduce Persona Analytics (PA), a system that tracks how users interact with data-driven personas. PA captures users’ mouse and gaze behavior to measure users’ interaction with algorithmically generated personas and use of system features for an interactive persona system. Measuring these activities grants an understanding of the behaviors of a persona user, required for quantitative measurement of persona use to obtain scientifically valid evidence. Conducting a study with 144 participants, we demonstrate how PA can be deployed for remote user studies during exceptional times when physical user studies are difficult, if not impossible.© 2022 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Assisted Viewpoint Interaction for 3D Visualization
Many three-dimensional visualizations are characterized by the use of a mobile viewpoint that offers multiple perspectives on a set of visual information. To effectively control the viewpoint, the viewer must simultaneously manage the cognitive tasks of understanding the layout of the environment, and knowing where to look to find relevant information, along with mastering the physical interaction required to position the viewpoint in meaningful locations. Numerous systems attempt to address these problems by catering to two extremes: simplified controls or direct presentation. This research attempts to promote hybrid interfaces that offer a supportive, yet unscripted exploration of a virtual environment.Attentive navigation is a specific technique designed to actively redirect viewers' attention while accommodating their independence. User-evaluation shows that this technique effectively facilitates several visualization tasks including landmark recognition, survey knowledge acquisition, and search sensitivity. Unfortunately, it also proves to be excessively intrusive, leading viewers to occasionally struggle for control of the viewpoint. Additional design iterations suggest that formalized coordination protocols between the viewer and the automation can mute the shortcomings and enhance the effectiveness of the initial attentive navigation design.The implications of this research generalize to inform the broader requirements for Human-Automation interaction through the visual channel.
