    Get PDF
Technology found in modern fitness sensor devices advances at a very fast pace and current smartwatches are on the verge of closing the gap between being an everyday object and a medically reliable monitoring device. In this thesis, the possibility of adopting fitness sensor devices in medical environments is explored and use cases in which sensor devices can be deployed are examined. Their successful transfer from the area of sports to medical analyses and treatments may help patients to deal with their illnesses and to improve the level of patient care found today. Privacy and security issues as well as social concerns associated with such a disruptive evolution are discussed and practical tests of a pulse oximeter in various activities of daily living are conducted. The collected health data depicts a close representation of the performed activities. Furthermore, three types of fitness sensor devices were used in different real-life scenarios and the resulting data is compared. The results show that the recorded vital signs may differ significantly, depending on the scenario. ii

Intelligent medical service system integrates wireless internet of things (WIoT), including medical sensors, wireless communications, and middleware techniques, so as to collect and analyze patients' data to examine their physical conditions by many personal health devices (PHDs) in real time. However, large amount of malicious codes on the Android system can compromise consumers' privacy, and further threat the hospital management or even the patients' health. Furthermore, this sensor-rich system keeps generating large amounts of data and saturates the middleware system. To address these challenges, we propose a fog computing security and privacy protection solution. Specifically, first, we design the security and privacy protection framework based on the fog computing to improve tele-health and tele-medicine infrastructure. Then, we propose a context-based privacy leakage detection method based on the combination of dynamic and static information. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve higher detection accuracy and lower energy consumption compared with other state-of-art methods. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program) under Grant No.61572253, the 13th Five-Year Plan Equipment Pre-Research Projects Fund under Grant No.61402420101HK02001, and the Aviation Science Fund under Grant No. 2016ZC52030

Furthermore, neither decisive treatment nor effective medicines have yet become effective. One potential alternative to this emerging challenge is utilizing supportive technologies and services that not only assist people with dementia to do their daily activities safely and independently, but also reduce the overwhelming pressure on their caregivers. Thus, for this study, a systematic literature review is conducted in an attempt to gain an overview of the latest findings in this field of study and to address some commercially available supportive technologies and services that have potential application for people living with dementia. To this end, 30 potential supportive technologies and 15 active supportive services are identified from the literature and related websites. The technologies and services are classified into different classes and subclasses (according to their functionalities, capabilities, and features) aiming to facilitate their understanding and evaluation. The results of this work are aimed as a base for designing, integrating, developing, adapting, and customizing potential multimodal solutions for the specific needs of vulnerable people of our societies, such as those who suffer from different degrees of dementia.publishersversionpublishe

Exploring the Landscape of Ubiquitous In-home Health Monitoring: A Comprehensive Survey

Ubiquitous in-home health monitoring systems have become popular in recent years due to the rise of digital health technologies and the growing demand for remote health monitoring. These systems enable individuals to increase their independence by allowing them to monitor their health from the home and by allowing more control over their well-being. In this study, we perform a comprehensive survey on this topic by reviewing a large number of literature in the area. We investigate these systems from various aspects, namely sensing technologies, communication technologies, intelligent and computing systems, and application areas. Specifically, we provide an overview of in-home health monitoring systems and identify their main components. We then present each component and discuss its role within in-home health monitoring systems. In addition, we provide an overview of the practical use of ubiquitous technologies in the home for health monitoring. Finally, we identify the main challenges and limitations based on the existing literature and provide eight recommendations for potential future research directions toward the development of in-home health monitoring systems. We conclude that despite extensive research on various components needed for the development of effective in-home health monitoring systems, the development of effective in-home health monitoring systems still requires further investigation.Comment: 35 pages, 5 figure

Deliberative Context-Aware Ambient Intelligence System for Assisted Living Homes

[EN] Monitoring wellbeing and stress is one of the problems covered by ambient intelligence, as stress is a significant cause of human illnesses directly affecting our emotional state. The primary aim was to propose a deliberation architecture for an ambient intelligence healthcare application. The architecture provides a plan for comforting stressed seniors suffering from negative emotions in an assisted living home and executes the plan considering the environment¿s dynamic nature. Literature was reviewed to identify the convergence between deliberation and ambient intelligence and the latter¿s latest healthcare trends. A deliberation function was designed to achieve context-aware dynamic human-robot interaction, perception, planning capabilities, reactivity, and context-awareness with regard to the environment. A number of experimental case studies in a simulated assisted living home scenario were conducted to demonstrate the approach¿s behavior and validity. The proposed methods were validated to show classification accuracy. The validation showed that the deliberation function has effectively achieved its deliberative objectives. This work is supported by the Spanish MINECO Project (No. TIN2017-88476-C2-1-R) and the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia Research (Grant No. PAID-10-19).Babli, M.; Rincón-Arango, JA.; Onaindia De La Rivaherrera, E.; Carrascosa Casamayor, C.; Julian, V. Wearable Computing for Health and Fitness: Exploring the Relationship between Data and Human Behaviour

    Get PDF
Health and fitness wearable technology has recently advanced, making it easier for an individual to monitor their behaviours. Previously self generated data interacts with the user to motivate positive behaviour change, but issues arise when relating this to long term mention of wearable devices. Previous studies within this area are discussed. We also consider a new approach where data is used to support instead of motivate, through monitoring and logging to encourage reflection. Based on issues highlighted, we then make recommendations on the direction in which future work could be most beneficial

An adaptive real-time intelligent system to enhance self-care of chronic disease (ARISES)

Diabetes mellitus is an increasingly prevalent chronic metabolic condition characterised by impaired glucose homeostasis and raised blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia). Broadly categorised as either type 1 (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes (T2DM), people with diabetes are largely responsible for self-managing their blood glucose levels. Despite the development of diabetes technologies such as real time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM), many individuals are frequently exposed to iatrogenic low blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia). Severe hypoglycaemia is associated with an increased risk of recurrent hypoglycaemia, impaired symptomatic awareness of hypoglycaemia, and potentially death if left untreated. This thesis affirmed the existing clinical impact of severe hypoglycaemia and its recurrent risk in a six-month analysis of severe hypoglycaemia attended by the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust (LAS). Fewer incidents of severe hypoglycaemia observed in a date matched repeat analysis during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown suggested improved self-management possibly motivated by a proximal fear of hospitalisation and improved structure at home. Finally, a 12-week randomised control trial demonstrating a significant difference in time spent in hypoglycaemia <3mmol/L, is the first study to prove the immediate provision of RT-CGM significantly reduces the risk of recurrent hypoglycaemia. Moreover, it highlighted the impact of socioeconomic disparity as a barrier to effective hypoglycaemia risk modification. This guided the design of an adaptive real time intelligent system to enhance self-care of chronic disease (ARISES) aimed to deliver therapeutic and lifestyle decision support for people with T1DM. The ARISES graphic user interface (GUI) design was a collaborative process conceived in a series of focus group meetings including people with T1DM. Finally, a 12-week observational study using RT-CGM, a physiological sensor wristband, and a mobile diary app, allowed for a sub-analysis identifying measurable physiological parameters associated with current and impending hypoglycaemia in people with T1DM.Open Acces
