Automated user modeling for personalized digital libraries

    Get PDF
Digital libraries (DL) have become one of the most typical ways of accessing any kind of digitalized information. Due to this key role, users welcome any improvements on the services they receive from digital libraries. One trend used to improve digital services is through personalization. Up to now, the most common approach for personalization in digital libraries has been user-driven. Nevertheless, the design of efficient personalized services has to be done, at least in part, in an automatic way. In this context, machine learning techniques automate the process of constructing user models. This paper proposes a new approach to construct digital libraries that satisfy user’s necessity for information: Adaptive Digital Libraries, libraries that automatically learn user preferences and goals and personalize their interaction using this information

Personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries

Widespread use of the Internet has resulted in digital libraries that are increasingly used by diverse communities of users for diverse purposes and in which sharing and collaboration have become important social elements. As such libraries become commonplace, as their contents and services become more varied, and as their patrons become more experienced with computer technology, users will expect more sophisticated services from these libraries. A simple search function, normally an integral part of any digital library, increasingly leads to user frustration as user needs become more complex and as the volume of managed information increases. Proactive digital libraries, where the library evolves from being passive and untailored, are seen as offering great potential for addressing and overcoming these issues and include techniques such as personalisation and recommender systems. In this paper, following on from the DELOS/NSF Working Group on Personalisation and Recommender Systems for Digital Libraries, which met and reported during 2003, we present some background material on the scope of personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries. We then outline the working group’s vision for the evolution of digital libraries and the role that personalisation and recommender systems will play, and we present a series of research challenges and specific recommendations and research priorities for the field

Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

This is an open access article shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/). Copyright @ 2010 The Authors. The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework

Australian public libraries statistical report 2011-2012

This report identifies and measures the usage and activities of Australia\u27s public library services and the services they offer. Foreword The National Library and the State and Territory libraries throughout Australia are represented by the peak body, National & State Libraries Australasia (NSLA). NSLA members also represent the interests of the public library networks within their States and Territories. The public library network, represented by 1,505 public library service points across Australia, provides information, collections and services to meet the information needs of the general public including those of diverse user groups. While the ongoing demands for print and audio media continue to be met, the public library network is assisting to break down the digital divide through increasing the scope and availability of digital materials, equipment and associated training. The Australian Public Libraries Statistical Report is an annual NSLA project that identifies and measures the usage and activities of Australia\u27s public library services. The survey highlights the range of services provided by public libraries across the National, State and Territory libraries

Going Digital in Italy: Obstacles Concerning Access to Digital Libraries

This paper presents the findings of a user survey, promoted and financed by the Digital Renaissance Foundation in Italy. Digital resources and the Web are continuing to offer many opportunities to improve the access to information but how are libraries changing their internal organisation and diversifying their services? What are users’ priorities and perceptions of digital library services? Selection criteria for digital collections, digital libraries management, co-operation experiences and issues, together with uses and users are described critically. In conclusion, obstacles to the development of digital libraries in Italy are evidenced

Prospects of digital information services in Nigerisn public libraries

Abstract This paper explores prospects of digital information services in Nigerian public libraries. The paper identified potential advantages of digital library system as a tool for modern information services. It observes that public library services will not be successful without the adoption and use of digital technologies such as hardware and software components that improve library services. The paper analyzes the concept of digital library, role of public library in digital environment and training need for public librarians in digital service delivery as well as constraints to digital information services in Nigerian public libraries. It provides workable recommendations on how Nigerian public libraries will move forward in the digital environment by formulating digital library policy and standards, user education, provision of adequate training and re-training of staff through seminars, conferences and workshops as well as adequate budget for the purchase of digital technologies and resources for effective service delivery

    Online Issues Are Global

THE INFORMATION INDUSTRY is international. With major English-language online publishers based in the Netherlands, Germany, and Canada (not to mention Alabama and New York), the information you lease may be generated and designed anywhere in the world. Likewise, the issues and challenges facing libraries as they move to large-scale digital collections are global in nature. Conferences about digital libraries are also international; in September I attended Digilib: Towards a User-Centered Approach to Digital Libraries in Finland. Two hundred attendees from over 20 countries discussed how to gather user information for the purpose of designing more useful digital libraries. Sessions were organized around five main themes: methodology of user studies; usefulness and validity of digital resources in research; evaluation of digital library programs and services; impacts on learning and research; and new developments and future visions. A highlight was the keynote speech by Lars Bjornshauge, director of libraries, Lund University, Sweden. Bjornshauge focused on the most important challenges that face digital libraries--and for which we lack solutions

This study aims to describe the implementation of digital libraries in universities. This research is a descriptive study with a literature review method. Five articles were selected that discussed the differences and similarities in user satisfaction between undergraduate and postgraduate students regarding the existence of digital libraries. This study discusses similarities, dissimilarities, provides views, compares and summarizes selected articles. It was found that there are differences and similarities in user perceptions in the use of higher education digital libraries, factors that influence user satisfaction with digital libraries such as system quality, information, and services, digital library affinity, perceived ease and satisfaction felt by users. The five selected articles stated that in a group of academics in which there were undergraduate and postgraduate students had different perceptions of digital libraries. Undergraduate students tend to emphasize speed of access, while postgraduate students prioritize the validity and up-to-date of an information source to meet their needs for information. The results of this study are expected to be a material consideration for policy makers in planning the development of digital libraries so that they are right on target so that their utilization can be maximize

EVALUATION OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES TO IMPROVE AGILE LIBRARY SERVICES

This research aims to analyze digital library optimization to support the development of agile libraries. The development of agile libraries through the optimization of digital libraries is seen from the perception of convenience, perceived benefits, and acceptance of digital libraries by the user community. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection is done by purposive sampling technique.Triangulation is used to analyze data. The results show that the optimization of digital libraries for the development of agile library services is measured by ease of use in terms of systems that are easy to learn, easy to master, clear and easy to reach, flexible, and easy to use.Furthermore, flexible factors are the only aspect that needs to be improved. To improve agile library services through the optimization of digital libraries in terms of perceived benefits in terms of ease of information search, useful in finding information, increasing effectiveness, increasing productivity, and developing work performance. Then from the perception of usefulness as a whole is quite good because the existence of this digital library provides positive value for the development of agile library services
