    Modelling the User: How design for sustainable behaviour can reveal different stakeholder perspectives on human nature

    Copyright @ 2010 TU DelftInfluencing more environmentally friendly and sustainable behaviour is a current focus of many projects, ranging from government social marketing campaigns, education and tax structures to designers’ work on interactive products, services and environments. There is a wide variety of techniques and methods used—we have identified over 100 design patterns in our Design with Intent toolkit—each intended to work via a particular set of cognitive and environmental principles. These approaches make different assumptions about ‘what people are like’: how users will respond to behavioural interventions, and why, and in the process reveal some of the assumptions that designers and other stakeholders, such as clients commissioning a project, make about human nature. In this paper, we discuss three simple models of user behaviour—the Pinball, the Shortcut and the Thoughtful—which emerge from user experience designers’ statements about users while focused on designing for behaviour change. We characterise these models using systems terminology and examine the application of each model to design for sustainable behaviour via a series of examples

    Online learning is becoming ubiquitous, and increasing numbers of higher education providers use online delivery, usually managed through learning management systems, as part of their core business of education. A substantial body of literature exists in areas of online learning such as theoretical approaches or general principles of course design. However, there is little research that explores the user experience of online learners accessing their learning through learning management systems, and in particular, how the presentation or layout of the online courses impacts the learner user experience. As a result, online courses are often designed according to the preferences of the individuals responsible for their delivery, rather than as the end result of an evidence-based approach. This mixed-methods study sought to evaluate the impact of a course template, designed to create an aesthetic learning experience, on the learner user experience. The study was conducted in one college of a New Zealand university. Data was collected, using an online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, from staff facilitating and students enrolled in first-year courses. Findings indicate that the use of a template that incorporated evidence-based design principles had a significant positive effect on learner user experience. Narrative was shown to be an important aesthetic construct, and the use of the aesthetic template was found to reduce the extraneous cognitive load of courses, increasing learners’ sense of engagement and, motivation, and self-efficacy

    The Usefulness of Multi-Sensor Affect Detection on User Experience: An Application of Biometric Measurement Systems on Online Purchasing

    abstract: Traditional usability methods in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) have been extensively used to understand the usability of products. Measurements of user experience (UX) in traditional HCI studies mostly rely on task performance and observable user interactions with the product or services, such as usability tests, contextual inquiry, and subjective self-report data, including questionnaires, interviews, and usability tests. However, these studies fail to directly reflect a user’s psychological involvement and further fail to explain the cognitive processing and the related emotional arousal. Thus, capturing how users think and feel when they are using a product remains a vital challenge of user experience evaluation studies. Conversely, recent research has revealed that sensor-based affect detection technologies, such as eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and facial expression analysis, effectively capture affective states and physiological responses. These methods are efficient indicators of cognitive involvement and emotional arousal and constitute effective strategies for a comprehensive measurement of UX. The literature review shows that the impacts of sensor-based affect detection systems to the UX can be categorized in two groups: (1) confirmatory to validate the results obtained from the traditional usability methods in UX evaluations; and (2) complementary to enhance the findings or provide more precise and valid evidence. Both provided comprehensive findings to uncover the issues related to mental and physiological pathways to enhance the design of product and services. Therefore, this dissertation claims that it can be efficient to integrate sensor-based affect detection technologies to solve the current gaps or weaknesses of traditional usability methods. The dissertation revealed that the multi-sensor-based UX evaluation approach through biometrics tools and software corroborated user experience identified by traditional UX methods during an online purchasing task. The use these systems enhanced the findings and provided more precise and valid evidence to predict the consumer purchasing preferences. Thus, their impact was “complementary” on overall UX evaluation. The dissertation also provided information of the unique contributions of each tool and recommended some ways user experience researchers can combine both sensor-based and traditional UX approaches to explain consumer purchasing preferences.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Human Systems Engineering 201

    Scoping analytical usability evaluation methods: A case study

    Analytical usability evaluation methods (UEMs) can complement empirical evaluation of systems: for example, they can often be used earlier in design and can provide accounts of why users might experience difficulties, as well as what those difficulties are. However, their properties and value are only partially understood. One way to improve our understanding is by detailed comparisons using a single interface or system as a target for evaluation, but we need to look deeper than simple problem counts: we need to consider what kinds of accounts each UEM offers, and why. Here, we report on a detailed comparison of eight analytical UEMs. These eight methods were applied to it robotic arm interface, and the findings were systematically compared against video data of the arm ill use. The usability issues that were identified could be grouped into five categories: system design, user misconceptions, conceptual fit between user and system, physical issues, and contextual ones. Other possible categories such as User experience did not emerge in this particular study. With the exception of Heuristic Evaluation, which supported a range of insights, each analytical method was found to focus attention on just one or two categories of issues. Two of the three "home-grown" methods (Evaluating Multimodal Usability and Concept-based Analysis of Surface and Structural Misfits) were found to occupy particular niches in the space, whereas the third (Programmable User Modeling) did not. This approach has identified commonalities and contrasts between methods and provided accounts of why a particular method yielded the insights it did. Rather than considering measures such as problem count or thoroughness, this approach has yielded insights into the scope of each method

    Information systems evaluation methodologies

    Due to the prevalent use of Information Systems (IS) in modern organisations nowadays, evaluation research in this field is becoming more and more important. In light of this, a set of rigorous methodologies were developed and used by IS researchers and practitioners to evaluate the increasingly complex IS implementation used. Moreover, different types of IS and different focusing perspectives of the evaluation require the selection and use of different evaluation approaches and methodologies. This paper aims to identify, explore, investigate and discuss the various key methodologies that can be used in IS evaluation from different perspectives, namely in nature (e.g. summative vs. formative evaluation) and in strategy (e.g. goal-based, goal-free and criteria-based evaluation). The paper concludes that evaluation methodologies should be selected depending on the nature of the IS and the specific goals and objectives of the evaluation. Nonetheless, it is also proposed that formative criteria-based evaluation and summative criteria-based evaluation are currently among the most and more widely used in IS research. The authors suggest that the combines used of one or more of these approaches can be applied at different stages of the IS life cycle in order to generate more rigorous and reliable evaluation outcomes

    Personalised trails and learner profiling within e-learning environments

    This deliverable focuses on personalisation and personalised trails. We begin by introducing and defining the concepts of personalisation and personalised trails. Personalisation requires that a user profile be stored, and so we assess currently available standard profile schemas and discuss the requirements for a profile to support personalised learning. We then review techniques for providing personalisation and some systems that implement these techniques, and discuss some of the issues around evaluating personalisation systems. We look especially at the use of learning and cognitive styles to support personalised learning, and also consider personalisation in the field of mobile learning, which has a slightly different take on the subject, and in commercially available systems, where personalisation support is found to currently be only at quite a low level. We conclude with a summary of the lessons to be learned from our review of personalisation and personalised trails

    HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION: ENHANCING USER EXPERIENCE IN INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS

    In this research, we investigate how human-computer interaction (HCI) can be used to improve the user experience (UX) of interactive systems. Studies in cognitive psychology, information processing, and human factors are examined as they relate to the development of HCI. It highlights how HCI has shifted its focus from functionality to user-friendliness, teaching ability, efficiency, enjoyment, and emotion. To better understand the current state of HCI and UX research, practice, and theory, a systematic literature study is performed. Focusing on users' goals wants, and characteristics at every stage of the design process is central to user-centered design (UCD) ideas and approaches, which are discussed at length in this article. We investigate usability testing as a crucial technique for bettering HCI, focusing on its advantages in pinpointing usability problems, boosting system efficacy, and boosting user pleasure. Methods for creating tests, finding participants, collecting data, and analyzing results are discussed. The importance of prototype methods in HCI and user-centric design is also emphasized in the study. This article delves into the practice of creating prototypes to collect user feedback, iterate designs, and perfect interactive systems. Techniques covered include paper prototyping, interactive wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes. We propose interaction design frameworks like the User-Centered Design Process (UCDP) and the Double Diamond model to help designers prioritize users when developing interactive systems. The study also delves into how technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, natural language processing, machine learning, and gesture-based interfaces have revolutionized HCI in recent years. The paper defends user-centric design's place in HCI, pointing out how UX affects user happiness, participation, and output. Researchers and practitioners in HCI and software engineering can greatly benefit from this paper's findings
