Assistive technology design and development for acceptable robotics companions for ageing years

It includes technologies which enhance well-being of individuals, specifically for older people. The ACCOMPANY project focuses on home companion technologies and issues surrounding technology development for assistive purposes. The project responds to some overlooked aspects of technology design, divided into multiple areas such as empathic and social human-robot interaction, robot learning and memory visualisation, and monitoring persons’ activities at home. To bring these aspects together, a dedicated task is identified to ensure technological integration of these multiple approaches on an existing robotic platform, Care-O-Bot®3 in the context of a smart-home environment utilising a multitude of sensor arrays. Formative and summative evaluation cycles are then used to assess the emerging prototype towards identifying acceptable behaviours and roles for the robot, for example role as a butler or a trainer, while also comparing user requirements to achieved progress. In a novel approach, the project considers ethical concerns and by highlighting principles such as autonomy, independence, enablement, safety and privacy, it embarks on providing a discussion medium where user views on these principles and the existing tension between some of these principles, for example tension between privacy and autonomy over safety, can be captured and considered in design cycles and throughout project developmentsPeer reviewe
Semantic Robot Programming for Goal-Directed Manipulation in Cluttered Scenes
We present the Semantic Robot Programming (SRP) paradigm as a convergence of
robot programming by demonstration and semantic mapping. In SRP, a user can
directly program a robot manipulator by demonstrating a snapshot of their
intended goal scene in workspace. The robot then parses this goal as a scene
graph comprised of object poses and inter-object relations, assuming known
object geometries. Task and motion planning is then used to realize the user's
goal from an arbitrary initial scene configuration. Even when faced with
different initial scene configurations, SRP enables the robot to seamlessly
adapt to reach the user's demonstrated goal. For scene perception, we propose
the Discriminatively-Informed Generative Estimation of Scenes and Transforms
(DIGEST) method to infer the initial and goal states of the world from RGBD
images. The efficacy of SRP with DIGEST perception is demonstrated for the task
of tray-setting with a Michigan Progress Fetch robot. Scene perception and task
execution are evaluated with a public household occlusion dataset and our

GUARDIANS final report
Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for firefghters. The large dimensions together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The Guardians robot swarm is designed to assist fire fighters in searching a
large warehouse. In this report we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots searching and assisting fire fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms which provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we
discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also one of the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus the robot swarm is able to locate itself and provide guidance information to the humans. Together with
the re ghters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm based information to human beings
A Reference Software Architecture for Social Robots
Social Robotics poses tough challenges to software designers who are required
to take care of difficult architectural drivers like acceptability, trust of
robots as well as to guarantee that robots establish a personalised interaction
with their users. Moreover, in this context recurrent software design issues
such as ensuring interoperability, improving reusability and customizability of
software components also arise.
Designing and implementing social robotic software architectures is a
time-intensive activity requiring multi-disciplinary expertise: this makes
difficult to rapidly develop, customise, and personalise robotic solutions.
These challenges may be mitigated at design time by choosing certain
architectural styles, implementing specific architectural patterns and using
particular technologies.
Leveraging on our experience in the MARIO project, in this paper we propose a
series of principles that social robots may benefit from. These principles lay
also the foundations for the design of a reference software architecture for
Social Robots. The ultimate goal of this work is to establish a common ground
based on a reference software architecture to allow to easily reuse robotic
software components in order to rapidly develop, implement, and personalise

Teaching humanoid robotics by means of human teleoperation through RGB-D sensors
This paper presents a graduate course project on humanoid robotics offered by the University of Padova. The target is to safely lift an object by teleoperating a small humanoid. Students have to map human limbs into robot joints, guarantee the robot stability during the motion, and teleoperate the robot to perform the correct movement. We introduce the following innovative aspects with respect to classical robotic classes: i) the use of humanoid robots as teaching tools; ii) the simplification of the stable locomotion problem by exploiting the potential of teleoperation; iii) the adoption of a Project-Based Learning constructivist approach as teaching methodology. The learning objectives of both course and project are introduced and compared with the students\u2019 background. Design and constraints students have to deal with are reported, together with the amount of time they and their instructors dedicated to solve tasks. A set of evaluation results are provided in order to validate the authors\u2019 purpose, including the students\u2019 personal feedback. A discussion about possible future improvements is reported, hoping to encourage further spread of educational robotics in schools at all levels
Personal Guides: Heterogeneous Robots Sharing Personal Tours in Multi-Floor Environments
GidaBot is an application designed to setup and run a heterogeneous team of robots to act as tour guides in multi-floor buildings. Although the tours can go through several floors, the robots can only service a single floor, and thus, a guiding task may require collaboration among several robots. The designed system makes use of a robust inter-robot communication strategy to share goals and paths during the guiding tasks. Such tours work as personal services carried out by one or more robots. In this paper, a face re-identification/verification module based on state-of-the-art techniques is developed, evaluated offline, and integrated into GidaBot’s real daily activities, to avoid new visitors interfering with those attended. It is a complex problem because, as users are casual visitors, no long-term information is stored, and consequently, faces are unknown in the training step. Initially, re-identification and verification are evaluated offline considering different face detectors and computing distances in a face embedding representation. To fulfil the goal online, several face detectors are fused in parallel to avoid face alignment bias produced by face detectors under certain circumstances, and the decision is made based on a minimum distance criterion.
