    Guiding Random Graphical and Natural User Interface Testing Through Domain Knowledge

    Users have access to a diverse set of interfaces that can be used to interact with software. Tools exist for automatically generating test data for an application, but the data required by each user interface is complex. Generating realistic data similar to that of a user is difficult. The environment which an application is running inside may also limit the data available, or updates to an operating system can break support for tools that generate test data. Consequently, applications exist for which there are no automated methods of generating test data similar to that which a user would provide through real usage of a user interface. With no automated method of generating data, the cost of testing increases and there is an increased chance of bugs being released into production code. In this thesis, we investigate techniques which aim to mimic users, observing how stored user interactions can be split to generate data targeted at specific states of an application, or to generate different subareas of the data structure provided by a user interface. To reduce the cost of gathering and labelling graphical user interface data, we look at generating randomised screen shots of applications, which can be automatically labelled and used in the training stage of a machine learning model. These trained models could guide a randomised approach at generating tests, achieving a significantly higher branch coverage than an unguided random approach. However, for natural user interfaces, which allow interaction through body tracking, we could not learn such a model through generated data. We find that models derived from real user data can generate tests with a significantly higher branch coverage than a purely random tester for both natural and graphical user interfaces. Our approaches use no feedback from an application during test generation. Consequently, the models are “generating data in the dark”. Despite this, these models can still generate tests with a higher coverage than random testing, but there may be a benefit to inferring the current state of an application and using this to guide data generation

    Teaching protocol exchanges over cellular air interface

    International audienceThe evolutionary path taken by cellular standards to the current and future standards is incomplete without fully understanding the older standards. The comprehension of the GSM standard, specifically the procedures for protocols exchange over the air interface will help students understand radio resource allocation procedures in GPRS and UMTS, and will ultimately assist future communication engineers to be able to design and solve problems related to these cellular standards. In this paper we describe the novel architecture of our teaching software, developed and programmed in Java. We present all the user interfaces and show how it can be used to assist in teaching, by presenting how the Mobile station and the GSM/GPRS network exchange data frames over the air interface with their associated protocols. Finally the uniqueness of this teaching tool was proved from the stand point of our modular architecture

    Keystroke Dynamics as Part of Lifelogging

    In this paper we present the case for including keystroke dynamics in lifelogging. We describe how we have used a simple keystroke logging application called Loggerman, to create a dataset of longitudinal keystroke timing data spanning a period of more than 6 months for 4 participants. We perform a detailed analysis of this data by examining the timing information associated with bigrams or pairs of adjacently-typed alphabetic characters. We show how there is very little day-on-day variation of the keystroke timing among the top-200 bigrams for some participants and for others there is a lot and this correlates with the amount of typing each would do on a daily basis. We explore how daily variations could correlate with sleep score from the previous night but find no significant relation-ship between the two. Finally we describe the public release of this data as well including as a series of pointers for future work including correlating keystroke dynamics with mood and fatigue during the day.Comment: Accepted to 27th International Conference on Multimedia Modeling, Prague, Czech Republic, June 202

    This paper describes the tools and techniques being applied in the TINA Open Service Creation Architecture (TOSCA) project to develop object-oriented models of distributed telecommunication services in SDL. The paper also describes the way in which Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) test cases are derived from these models and subsequently executed against the CORBA-based implementations of these services through a TTCN/CORBA gateway

    Comparing general-purpose and domain-specific languages: an empirical study

    Many domain-specific languages, that try to bring feasible alternatives for existing solutions while simplifying programming work, have come up in recent years. Although, these little languages seem to be easy to use, there is an open issue whether they bring advantages in comparison to the application libraries, which are the most commonly used implementation approach. In this work, we present an experiment, which was carried out to compare such a domain-specific language with a comparable application library. The experiment was conducted with 36 programmers, who have answered a questionnaire on both implementation approaches. The questionnaire is more than 100 pages long. For a domain-specific language and the application library, the same problem domain has been used – construction of graphical user interfaces. In terms of a domain-specific language, XAML has been used and C# Forms for the application library. A cognitive dimension framework has been used for a comparison between XAML and C# Forms

    EXPLOITING KASPAROV'S LAW: ENHANCED INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTEGRATION IN DOD SIMULATION-BASED TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

    Despite recent advances in the representation of logistics considerations in DOD staff training and wargaming simulations, logistics information systems (IS) remain underrepresented. Unlike many command and control (C2) systems, which can be integrated with simulations through common protocols (e.g., OTH-Gold), many logistics ISs require manpower-intensive human-in-the-loop (HitL) processes for simulation-IS (sim-IS) integration. Where automated sim-IS integration has been achieved, it often does not simulate important sociotechnical system (STS) dynamics, such as information latency and human error, presenting decision-makers with an unrealistic representation of logistics C2 capabilities in context. This research seeks to overcome the limitations of conventional sim-IS interoperability approaches by developing and validating a new approach for sim-IS information exchange through robotic process automation (RPA). RPA software supports the automation of IS information exchange through ISs’ existing graphical user interfaces. This “outside-in” approach to IS integration mitigates the need for engineering changes in ISs (or simulations) for automated information exchange. In addition to validating the potential for an RPA-based approach to sim-IS integration, this research presents recommendations for a Distributed Simulation Engineering and Execution Process (DSEEP) overlay to guide the engineering and execution of sim-IS environments.Major, United States Marine CorpsApproved for public release.
