The Future of Personalisation at News Websites: Lessons from a Longitudinal Study
This paper tracks the recent history of personalization at national news websites in the United Kingdom and United States, allowing an analysis to be made of the reasons for and implications of the adoption of this form of adaptive interactivity. Using three content surveys conducted over three and a half years, the study records—at an unprecedented level of detail—the range of personalization features offered by contemporary news websites, and demonstrates how news organizations increasingly rely on software algorithms to predict readers’ content preferences. The results also detail how news organizations’ deployment of personalization on mobile devices, and in conjunction with social networking platforms, is still at an early stage. In addressing the under-researched but important—and increasingly prevalent—phenomenon of personalization, this paper contributes to debates on journalism’s future funding, transparency, and societal benefits
DEPLOYMENT AND USABILITY EVALUATION OF MOBILE ACCESS TO INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY
An Institutional Repository is essentially a web application that is capable of
capturing, preserving and disseminating the intellectual output of a University or
research institution in dig ital formats. The advent of the Mobile Web has ushered in
a new wave of mobile devices - with multi-touch facilities and thus there has been a
shift from Web access to Mobile Web access. This has brought about the need to
make web applications accessible via mobile devices. This study investigated the
usability of the core functionalities of an Institutional Repository on various mobile
devices. The work did not try to create a mobile version of the repository but rather
test the existing web application on various mobile platforms. To achieve this, the
core functionalities of the repository were modelled using Unified Modelling
Language (UML). In addition, an Institutional Repository was built and deployed
for Covenant University by leveraging on open source repository software –
EPrints. Furthermore, the core functionalities of the Institutional Repository were
tested on five different mobile devices. Finally, the usability of the Institutional
Repository on the various mobile devices used was evaluated by identifying the
usability attributes; designing a questionnaire based on those attributes and then
analyzing the results with SPSS software. The results showed that overall the
current web version of the repository had a good usability score on the mobile
devices used
DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MOBILE NEWS SERVICES: SUPPORTING SOCIAL NETWORKING FEATURES
This paper discusses and implements features both for a mobile Web and for a mobile native application, capable to provide news services enriched with indicative social networking elements. The objective was to facilitate the involvement of mobile users to produce and upload new content on the News Website and to facilitate their participation in the promotion and evaluation of the existing content. A significant addition was the implementation of an application for the automatic storing of articles derived from external sources, such as RSS/Atom feeds and emails. The results of our work are primarily related with the investigation and understanding of serious technical challenges, as well as the eventual development of proper solutions regarding the support of the ‘participative relation’ of mobile users with news-oriented Web content
Web-based applications for open display networks : developers’ perspective
Open Display Networks represent a new paradigm for large scale networks of public displays that are open to applications and content from third parties. Web technologies may be particularly interesting as a technological framework for third-party application development in Open Display Networks because
of their portability and widespread use. However, there are also significant challenges involved that result from the specificities of this particular usage domain and the lack of specific development insights for this context. In this work, we address the concept of public display application (display app) from a development perspective. The overall goal of this paper is to identify and characterize some of the key specificities of display applications and the appropriate Web solutions that can serve in the development of this type of application. The contribution of this paper builds on our extensive experience with the application development for a real world public display infrastructure and also on a short-term experiment with third party developers. Overall, the results show that Web technologies are valuable building blocks for public displays applications and their adoption is not only a subject for adaptation procedures but also for redesigning their use according to the characteristics and user experience offered by public displays. This research will inform the design of new Web-based models of display applications and shed light on the challenges that may impede third party development and the evolution of an application ecosystem in this area.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
User modeling for exploratory search on the Social Web. Exploiting social bookmarking systems for user model extraction, evaluation and integration
Exploratory search is an information seeking strategy that extends be- yond the query-and-response paradigm of traditional Information Retrieval models. Users browse through information to discover novel content and to learn more about the newly discovered things. Social bookmarking systems integrate well with exploratory search, because they allow one to search, browse, and filter social bookmarks.
Our contribution is an exploratory tag search engine that merges social bookmarking with exploratory search. For this purpose, we have applied collaborative filtering to recommend tags to users. User models are an im- portant prerequisite for recommender systems. We have produced a method to algorithmically extract user models from folksonomies, and an evaluation method to measure the viability of these user models for exploratory search. According to our evaluation web-scale user modeling, which integrates user models from various services across the Social Web, can improve exploratory search. Within this thesis we also provide a method for user model integra- tion.
Our exploratory tag search engine implements the findings of our user model extraction, evaluation, and integration methods. It facilitates ex- ploratory search on social bookmarks from Delicious and Connotea and pub- lishes extracted user models as Linked Data
Farm 2.0 Using Wordpress to Manage Geocontent and Promote Regional Food Products
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.Recent innovations in geospatial technology have dramatically increased the utility and ubiquity of cartographic interfaces and spatially-referenced content on the web. Capitalizing on these developments, the Farm2.0 system demonstrates an approach to manage user-generated geocontent pertaining to European protected designation of origin (PDO) food products.Wordpress, a popular open-source publishing platform, supplies the framework for a geographic content management system, or GeoCMS, to promote PDO products in the Spanish province of Valencia. The Wordpress platform is modified through a suite of plug-ins and customizations to create an extensible application that could be easily deployed in other regions and administrated
cooperatively by distributed regulatory councils. Content, either regional recipes or map locations for vendors and farms, is available for syndication as a GeoRSS feed and aggregated with outside feeds in a dynamic web map
eStorys: A visual storyboard system supporting back-channel communication for emergencies
This is the post-print version of the final paper published in Journal of Visual Languages & Computing. The published article is available from the link below. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier B.V.In this paper we present a new web mashup system for helping people and professionals to retrieve information about emergencies and disasters. Today, the use of the web during emergencies, is confirmed by the employment of systems like Flickr, Twitter or Facebook as demonstrated in the cases of Hurricane Katrina, the July 7, 2005 London bombings, and the April 16, 2007 shootings at Virginia Polytechnic University. Many pieces of information are currently available on the web that can be useful for emergency purposes and range from messages on forums and blogs to georeferenced photos. We present here a system that, by mixing information available on the web, is able to help both people and emergency professionals in rapidly obtaining data on emergency situations by using multiple web channels. In this paper we introduce a visual system, providing a combination of tools that demonstrated to be effective in such emergency situations, such as spatio/temporal search features, recommendation and filtering tools, and storyboards. We demonstrated the efficacy of our system by means of an analytic evaluation (comparing it with others available on the web), an usability evaluation made by expert users (students adequately trained) and an experimental evaluation with 34 participants.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and
