    Wavelet compression of digital holograms: Towards a view-dependent framework

It is observed that Gabor wavelet bases have better time-frequency localization as compared to Fresnelet bases and hence are well suited for view-dependent compression techniques for hologram reconstruction

    Holographic representation: Hologram plane vs. object plane

    Digital holography allows the recording, storage and subsequent reconstruction of both amplitude and phase of the light field scattered by an object. This is accomplished by recording interference patterns that preserve the properties of the original object field essential for 3D visualization, the so-called holograms. Digital holography refers to the acquisition of holograms with a digital sensor, typically a CCD or a CMOS camera, and to the reconstruction of the 3D object field using numerical methods. In the current work, the different representations of digital holographic information in the hologram and in the object planes are studied. The coding performance of the different complex field representations, notably Amplitude-Phase and Real-Imaginary, in both the hologram plane and the object plane, is assessed using both computer generated and experimental holograms. The HEVC intra main coding profile is used for the compression of the different representations in both planes, either for experimental holograms or computer generated holograms. The HEVC intra compression in the object plane outperforms encoding in the hologram plane. Furthermore, encoding computer generated holograms in the object plane has a larger benefit than the same encoding over the experimental holograms. This difference was expected, since experimental holograms are affected by a larger negative influence of speckle noise, resulting in a loss of compression efficiency. This work emphasizes the possibility of holographic coding on the object plane, instead of the common encoding in the hologram plane approach. Moreover, this possibility allows direct visualization of the Object Plane Amplitude in a regular 2D display without any transformation methods.     Compression of phase-only holograms with JPEG standard and deep learning

    It is a critical issue to reduce the enormous amount of data in the processing, storage and transmission of a hologram in digital format. In photograph compression, the JPEG standard is commonly supported by almost every system and device. It will be favorable if JPEG standard is applicable to hologram compression, with advantages of universal compatibility. However, the reconstructed image from a JPEG compressed hologram suffers from severe quality degradation since some high frequency features in the hologram will be lost during the compression process. In this work, we employ a deep convolutional neural network to reduce the artifacts in a JPEG compressed hologram. Simulation and experimental results reveal that our proposed "JPEG + deep learning" hologram compression scheme can achieve satisfactory reconstruction results for a computer-generated phase-only hologram after compression

    An overview of the holographic display related tasks within the European 3DTV project

    A European consortium has been working since September 2004 on all video-based technical aspects of three-dimensional television. The group has structured its technical activities under five technical committees focusing on capturing 3D live scenes, converting the captured scenes to an abstract 3D representations, transmitting the 3D visual information, displaying the 3D video, and processing of signals for the conversion of the abstract 3D video to signals needed to drive the display. The display of 3D video signals by holographic means is highly desirable. Synthesis of high-resolution computer generated holograms with high spatial frequency content, using fast algorithms, is crucial. Fresnel approximation with its fast implementations, fast superposition of zonelens terms, look-up tables using pre-computed holoprimitives are reported in the literature. Phase-retrieval methods are also under investigation. Successful solutions to this problem will benefit from proper utilization and adaptation of signal processing tools like waveletes, fresnelets, chirplets. and atomic decompositions and various optimization algorithms like matching pursuit or simulated annealing

    On Fresnelets, interference fringes, and digital holography

    In this thesis, we describe new approaches and methods for reconstructing complex-valued wave fields from digital holograms. We focus on Fresnel holograms recorded in an off-axis geometry, for which operational real-time acquisition setups readily exist. The three main research directions presented are the following. First, we derive the necessary tools to port methods and concepts of wavelet-based approaches to the field of digital holography. This is motivated by the flexibility, the robustness, and the unifying view that such multiresolution procedures have brought to many applications in image processing. In particular, we put emphasis on space-frequency processing and sparse signal representations. Second, we propose to decouple the demodulation from the propagation problem, which are both inherent to digital Fresnel holography. To this end, we derive a method for retrieving the amplitude and phase of the object wave through a local analysis of the hologram's interference fringes. Third, since digital holography reconstruction algorithms involve a number of parametric models, we propose automatic adjustment methods of the corresponding parameters. We start by investigating the Fresnel transform, which plays a central role in both the modeling of the acquisition procedure and the reconstruction of complex wave fields. The study of the properties that are central to wavelet and multiresolution analysis leads us to derive Fresnelets, a new family of wavelet-like bases. Fresnelets permit the analysis of holograms with a good localization in space and frequency, in a way similar to wavelets for images. Since the relevant information in a Fresnel off-axis hologram may be separated both in space and frequency, we propose an approach for selectively retrieving the information in the Fresnelet domain. We show that in certain situations, this approach is superior to others that exclusively rely on the separation in space or frequency. We then derive a least-squares method for the estimation of the object wave's amplitude and phase. The approach, which is reminiscent of phase-shifting techniques, is sufficiently general to be applied in a wide variety of situations, including those dictated by the use of microscopy objectives. Since it is difficult to determine the reconstruction distance manually, we propose an automatic procedure. We take advantage of our separate treatment of the phase retrieval and propagation problems to come up with an algorithm that maximizes a sharpness metric related to the sparsity of the signal's expansion in distance-dependent Fresnelet bases. Based on a simulation study, we suggest a number of guidelines for deciding which algorithm to apply to a given problem. We compare existing and the newly proposed solutions in a wide variety of situations. Our final conclusion is that the proposed methods result in flexible algorithms that are competitive with preexisting ones and superior to them in many cases. Overall, they may be applied in a wide range of experimental situations at a low computational cost

    Coefficients Quantization at Off-axis Digital Hologram Wavelet Compression

    Digital holographic information is compressed for storage of 2D- or 3D-objects amplitude and phase distributions, fast transmission, analyzing and displaying of these data. In this paper features of application of wavelet transforms for off-axis digital holograms compression are considered. The combined technique based on zero and twin orders elimination, wavelet compression of the amplitude and phase components of obtained Fourier spectrum and further additional compression of wavelet coefficients by thresholding and quantization is analyzed. Numerical experiments on reconstruction of images from the compressed holograms are performed. The comparative analysis of applicability of various wavelets and additional quantization of coefficients is performed. Obtained results demonstrate possibility of 180 and more times compression using iterative and noniterative methods of coefficients quantization and threshold zeroing less 80% of wavelet coefficients.     A Survey of Signal Processing Problems and Tools in Holographic Three-Dimensional Television

Recent work on 3DTV displays has posed particularly challenging signal processing problems. Various procedures to compute Rayleigh-Sommerfeld, Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction exist in the literature. Diffraction between parallel planes and tilted planes can be efficiently computed. Discretization and quantization of diffraction fields yield interesting theoretical and practical results, and allow efficient schemes compared to commonly used Nyquist sampling. The literature on computer-generated holography provides a good resource for holographic 3DTV related issues. Fast algorithms to compute Fourier, Walsh-Hadamard, fractional Fourier, linear canonical, Fresnel, and wavelet transforms, as well as optimization-based techniques such as best orthogonal basis, matching pursuit, basis pursuit etc., are especially relevant signal processing techniques for wave propagation, diffraction, holography, and related problems. Atomic decompositions, multiresolution techniques, Gabor functions, and Wigner distributions are among the signal processing techniques which have or may be applied to problems in optics. Research aimed at solving such problems at the intersection of wave optics and signal processing promises not only to facilitate the development of 3DTV systems, but also to contribute to fundamental advances in optics and signal processing theory. © 2007 IEEE

    In this thesis we discuss and examine the contributions we have made to the field of digital hologram image processing. In particular, we will deal with the processing of numerical reconstructions of real-world three-dimensional macroscopic objects recorded by in-line digital holography. Our selection of in-line digital holography over off-axis digital holography is based primarily on resolution. There is evidence that an off-axis architecture requires approximately four times the resolution to record a hologram than an in-line architecture. The high resolution of holographic film means this is acceptable in optical holography. However, in digital holography the bandwidth of the recording medium is already severely limited and if we are to extract information from reconstructions we need the highest possible resolution which, if one cannot harness the functionality of accurately reconstructing phase, is achieved through using an in-line architecture. Two of the most significant problems encountered with reconstructions of in-line digital holograms include the small depth-of-field of each reconstruction and corruptive influence of the unwanted twin-image. This small depth-of-field makes it difficult to accurately process the numerical reconstructions and it is in this shortcoming that we will make our first three contributions: focusing algorithms, background and object segmentation algorithms and algorithms to create a single image where all object regions are in focus. Using a combination of our focusing algorithms and our background segmentation algorithm, we will make our fourth contribution: a rapid twin-image reduction algorithm for in-line digital holography. We believe that our techniques would be applicable to all digital holographic objects, in particular its relevant to objects where phase unwrapping is not an option. We demonstrate the usefulness of the algorithms for a range of macroscopic objects with varying texture and contrast
