Dublin Core Metadata Harvested Through OAI-PMH
The introduction in 2001 of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) increased interest in and awareness of metadata quality issues relevant to digital library interoperability and the use of harvested metadata to build "union catalogs" of digital information resources. Practitioners have offered wide-ranging advice to metadata authors and have suggested metrics useful for measuring the quality of shareable metadata. Is there evidence of changes in metadata practice in response to such advice and/or as a result of an increased awareness of the importance of metadata interoperability? This paper looks at metadata records created over a six-year period that have been harvested by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and reports on quantitative and qualitative analyses of changes observed over time in shareable metadata quality.IMLS National Leadership Grant LG-02-02-0281published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe
Using metadata for content indexing within an OER network
This paper outlines the ICT solution for a metadata portal indexing open educational resources within a network of institutions. The network is aimed at blending academic and entrepreneurial knowledge,by enabling higher education institutions to publish various academic learning resources e.g. video lectures, course planning materials, or thematic content, whereasenterprises can present different forms of expert knowledge, such as case studies, expert presentations on specific topics, demonstrations of software implementation in practice and the like. As these resources need to bediscoverable, accessible and shared by potential learners across the learning environment, it is very important that they are well described and tagged in a standard way in machine readable form by metadata. Only then can they be successfully used and reused, especially when a large amount of these resources is reached, which makes it hard for the user to locate efficiently those of interest. The metadata set adopted in our approach relies on two standards: Dublin Core and Learning Object Metadata. eBank UK: linking research data, scholarly communication and learning
This paper includes an overview of the changing landscape of scholarly communication and describes outcomes from the innovative eBank UK project, which seeks to build links from e-research through to e-learning. As introduction, the scholarly knowledge cycle is described and the role of digital repositories and aggregator services in linking data-sets from Grid-enabled projects to e-prints through to peer-reviewed articles as resources in portals and Learning Management Systems, are assessed. The development outcomes from the eBank UK project are presented including the distributed information architecture, requirements for common ontologies, data models, metadata schema, open linking technologies, provenance and workflows. Some emerging challenges for the future are presented in conclusion
Search Engines Giving You Garbage? Put A Corc In It, Implementing The Cooperative Online Resource Catalog
This paper presents an implementation strategy for adding Internet resources to a library online catalog using OCLC\u27s Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC). Areas of consideration include deciding which electronic resources to include in the online catalog and how to select them. The value and importance of pathfinders in creating electronic bibliographies and the role of library staff in updating them is introduced. Using an electronic suggestion form as a means of Internet resource collection development is another innovative method of enriching library collections. Education and training for cataloging staff on Dublin Core elements is also needed. Attention should be paid to the needs of distance learners in providing access to Internet resources. The significance of evaluating the appropriateness of Internet resources for library collections is emphasized
Core Services in the Architecture of the National Digital Library for Science Education (NSDL)
We describe the core components of the architecture for the (NSDL) National
Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library.
Over time the NSDL will include heterogeneous users, content, and services. To
accommodate this, a design for a technical and organization infrastructure has
been formulated based on the notion of a spectrum of interoperability. This
paper describes the first phase of the interoperability infrastructure
including the metadata repository, search and discovery services, rights
management services, and user interface portal facilities
Preservation through access: the AHDS performing arts collections in ECLAP and Europeana
This poster provides an overview of the ongoing rescue of
valuable digital collections that had been taken down and
consequently lost to general access.
The University of Glasgow was home to the Arts and Humanities
Data Service Performing Arts (AHDS Performing Arts) [1], one
of the five arts and humanities data centres that constitute the Arts
and Humanities Data Service (AHDS). Since 1996 AHDS
supported the creation, curation, preservation and reuse of digital
materials for the UK Arts and Humanities research and teaching
community. AHDS Performing Arts, based in Glasgow, supported
research, learning and teaching in music, dance, theatre, radio,
film, television, and performance for thirteen years. Working with
the AHDS Executive, relevant performing arts collections have
been ingested, documented, preserved, and where possible made
available via the AHDS Cross Search Catalogue and Website to
researchers, practitioners, and the general public. Furthermore
strong relationships were developed with research and teaching
community upon a scoping study investigating user needs [2].
In 2007 the co-funders of the AHDS - Arts and Humanities
Research Council (AHRC) for the UK and the Joint Information
Systems Committee (JISC) - withdrew their funding. A detailed
risk assessment report was produced in response to the
withdrawal of core funding [3], but to no avail. When the AHDS
funding stopped, online access to these cultural resources
eventually became discontinued [4].
In 2010, the School of Culture and Creative Arts at the University
of Glasgow joined the EU-funded ECLAP project to ensure that at
least part of these resources could be accessible for the long term
by scholars and practitioners in the performing arts arena, and by
the general public. Below we briefly describe the ECLAP project,
the AHDS Performing Arts collections progressively available
through it and some thoughts on providing preservation through
access for this type of digital cultural resources
Building a terminology network for search: the KoMoHe project
The paper reports about results on the GESIS-IZ project "Competence Center
Modeling and Treatment of Semantic Heterogeneity" (KoMoHe). KoMoHe supervised a
terminology mapping effort, in which 'cross-concordances' between major
controlled vocabularies were organized, created and managed. In this paper we
describe the establishment and implementation of cross-concordances for search

DRIVER Technology Watch Report
This report is part of the Discovery Workpackage (WP4) and is the third report out of four deliverables. The objective of this report is to give an overview of the latest technical developments in the world of digital repositories, digital libraries and beyond, in order to serve as theoretical and practical input for the technical DRIVER developments, especially those focused on enhanced publications. This report consists of two main parts, one part focuses on interoperability standards for enhanced publications, the other part consists of three subchapters, which give a landscape picture of current and surfacing technologies and communities crucial to DRIVER. These three subchapters contain the GRID, CRIS and LTP communities and technologies. Every chapter contains a theoretical explanation, followed by case studies and the outcomes and opportunities for DRIVER in this field
Study on the use of metadata for digital learning objects in university institutional repositories (MODERI)
Metadata is a core issue for the creation of repositories. Different institutional repositories have chosen and use different metadata models, elements and values for describing the range of digital objects they store. Thus, this paper analyzes the current use of metadata describing those Learning Objects that some open higher educational institutions' repositories include in their collections. The goal of this work is to identify and analyze the different metadata models being used to describe educational features of those specific digital educational objects (such as audience, type of educational object, learning objectives, etc.). Also discussed is the concept and typology of Learning Objects (LO) through their use in University Repositories. We will also examine the usefulness of specifically describing those learning objects, setting them apart from other kind of documents included in the repository, mainly scholarly publications and research results of the Higher Education institution.En prens
