    Digital image correlation (DIC) analysis of the 3 December 2013 Montescaglioso landslide (Basilicata, Southern Italy). Results from a multi-dataset investigation

    Image correlation remote sensing monitoring techniques are becoming key tools for providing effective qualitative and quantitative information suitable for natural hazard assessments, specifically for landslide investigation and monitoring. In recent years, these techniques have been successfully integrated and shown to be complementary and competitive with more standard remote sensing techniques, such as satellite or terrestrial Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry. The objective of this article is to apply the proposed in-depth calibration and validation analysis, referred to as the Digital Image Correlation technique, to measure landslide displacement. The availability of a multi-dataset for the 3 December 2013 Montescaglioso landslide, characterized by different types of imagery, such as LANDSAT 8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) and TIRS (Thermal Infrared Sensor), high-resolution airborne optical orthophotos, Digital Terrain Models and COSMO-SkyMed Synthetic Aperture Radar, allows for the retrieval of the actual landslide displacement field at values ranging from a few meters (2–3 m in the north-eastern sector of the landslide) to 20–21 m (local peaks on the central body of the landslide). Furthermore, comprehensive sensitivity analyses and statistics-based processing approaches are used to identify the role of the background noise that affects the whole dataset. This noise has a directly proportional relationship to the different geometric and temporal resolutions of the processed imagery. Moreover, the accuracy of the environmental-instrumental background noise evaluation allowed the actual displacement measurements to be correctly calibrated and validated, thereby leading to a better definition of the threshold values of the maximum Digital Image Correlation sub-pixel accuracy and reliability (ranging from 1/10 to 8/10 pixel) for each processed dataset

    AbstractStarted in 2009, the COSMOCoast project aims to the investigation of the potential of Remote Sensing in support to the management of coastal areas. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of data acquired from the COSMO-SkyMed constellation, in view of their frequency of acquisitions and ground resolution; in particular this paper aims at assessing the potential of COSMO-SkyMed data for coastline delineation.     High resolution radargrammetry with COSMO-SkyMed, TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 imagery: development and implementation of an image orientation model for Digital Surface Model generation

    Digital Surface and Terrain Models (DSM/DTM) have large relevance in several territorial applications, such as topographic mapping, monitoring engineering, geology, security, land planning and management of Earth's resources. The satellite remote sensing data offer the opportunity to have continuous observation of Earth's surface for territorial application, with short acquisition and revisit times. Meeting these requirements, the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) high resolution satellite imagery could offer night-and-day and all-weather functionality (clouds, haze and rain penetration). Two different methods may be used in order to generate DSMs from SAR data: the interferometric and the radargrammetric approaches. The radargrammetry uses only the intensity information of the SAR images and reconstructs the 3D information starting from a couple of images similarly to photogrammetry. Radargrammetric DSM extraction procedure consists of two basic steps: the stereo pair orientation and the image matching for the automatic detection of homologous points. The goal of this work is the definition and the implementation of a geometric model in order to orientate SAR imagery in zero Doppler geometry. The radargrammetric model implemented in SISAR (Software per Immagini Satellitari ad Alta Risoluzione - developed at the Geodesy and Geomatic Division - University of Rome "La Sapienza") is based on the equation of radar target acquisition and zero Doppler focalization Moreover a tool for the SAR Rational Polynomial Coefficients (RPCs) generation has been implemented in SISAR software, similarly to the one already developed for the optical sensors. The possibility to generate SAR RPCs starting from a radargrammetric model sounds of particular interest since, at present, the most part of SAR imagery is not supplied with RPCs, although the RPFs model is available in several commercial software. Only RADARSAT-2 data are supplied with vendors RPCs. To test the effectiveness of the implemented RPCs generation tool and the SISAR radargrammetric orientation model the reference results were computed: the stereo pairs were orientated with the two model. The tests were carried out on several test site using COSMO-SkyMed, TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 data. Moreover, to evaluate the advantages and the different accuracy between the orientation models computed without GCPs and the orientation model with GCPs a Monte Carlo test was computed. At last, to define the real effectiveness of radargrammetric technique for DSM extraction and to compare the radrgrammetric tool implemented in a commercial software PCI-Geomatica v. 2012 and SISAR software, the images acquired on Beauport test site were used for DSM extraction. It is important underline that several test were computed. Part of this tests were carried out under the supervision of Prof. Thierry Toutin at CCRS (Canada Centre of Remote Sensing) where the PCI-Geomatica orientation model was developed, in order to check the better parameters solution to extract radargrammetric DSMs. In conclusion, the results obtained are representative of the geometric potentialities of SAR stereo pairs as regards 3D surface reconstruction

    Transport infrastructure monitoring by data fusion of GPR and SAR imagery information

    In order to maintain the highest operational safety standards, it is crucial that surface and structural deformation caused by geophysical natural hazards and human-related activities in linear transport networks (such as highways and railways) are monitored and evaluated. Today, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a well-established technology among the available non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for the collection of ground-based information. Concurrently, the space-borne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is another well-known viable methodology for large-scale investigations of road network surface deformations. However, it is fair to comment that the potential of this method in the area of transport infrastructure monitoring has not yet been sufficiently explored. Within this context, this research demonstrates the viability of integrating InSAR and GPR for monitoring transport assets at network level. The main theoretical and working principles of the two above-mentioned methodologies have been presented and discussed, and the advantage and drawbacks of each technique have then been analysed. The final section of the paper examines a recent experimental activity carried out on a real-life railway located in Puglia, Southern Italy. Test outcomes prove the viability of the proposed data fusion methodology for monitoring the health of transport assets at network level

    The Interferometric Use of Radar Sensors for the Urban Monitoring of Structural Vibrations and Surface Displacements

    In this paper, we propose a combined use of real aperture radar (RAR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, within an interferometric processing chain, to provide a new methodology for monitoring urban environment and historical buildings at different temporal and spatial scales. In particular, ground-based RAR measurements are performed to estimate the vibration displacements and the natural oscillation frequencies of structures, with the aim of supporting the understanding of the building dynamic response. These measurements are then juxtaposed with ground-based and space-borne SAR data to monitor surface deformation phenomena, and hence, point out potential risks within an urban environment. In this framework, differential interferometric SAR algorithms are implemented to generate short-term (monthly) surface displacement and long-term (annual) mean surface displacement velocity maps at local (hundreds m2) and regional (tens km2) scale, respectively. The proposed methodology, developed among the activities carried out within the national project Programma Operativo Nazionale MASSIMO (Monitoraggio in Area Sismica di SIstemi MOnumentali), is tested and discussed for the ancient structure of Saint Augustine compound, located in the historical center of Cosenza (Italy) and representing a typical example of the Italian Cultural Heritage

    Displacement monitoring in airport runways by persistent scatterers SAR interferometry

    Deformations monitoring in airport runways and the surrounding areas is crucial, especially in case of low-bearing capacity subgrades, such as the clayey subgrade soils. An effective monitoring of the infrastructure asset allows to secure the highest necessary standards in terms of the operational and safety requirements. Amongst the emerging remote sensing techniques for transport infrastructures monitoring, the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) technique has proven effective for the evaluation of the ground deformations. However, its use for certain demanding applications, such a as the assessment of millimetric differential deformations in airport runways, is still considered as an open issue for future developments. In this study, a time-series analysis of COSMO-SkyMed satellite images acquired from January 2015 to April 2019 is carried out by employing the PSI technique. The aim is to retrieve the mean deformation velocity and time series of the surface deformations occurring in airport runways. The technique is applied to Runway 3 at the “Leonardo da Vinci” International Airport in Rome, Italy. The proposed PSI technique is then validated by way of comparison with the deformation outcomes obtained on the runway by traditional topographic levelling over the same time span. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the applied PSI technique for the assessment of deformations in airport runways

    COSMO-SKYMED: A SATELLITE TOOL FOR MONITORING CULTURAL HERITAGE

    COSMO-SkyMed is the flagship Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite constellation of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) that, among the many civilian applications for which it was originally conceived, is nowadays successfully exploited for cultural heritage applications. Current capabilities offered by both the First and Second Generations satellites are reviewed in light of the experience undertaken by ASI through data exploitation initiatives with scientific and commercial users, and more importantly in the framework of institutional projects and cooperation agreements such as those with the Colosseum Archaeological Park and the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC). The interferometric nature of COSMO-SkyMed SAR acquisitions is the key feature exploited in structural and ground deformation monitoring of monuments and historical buildings, so as the constellation is currently the essential Earth Observation asset supporting MiC’s Extraordinary Plan of Monitoring and Conservation of Immovable Cultural Heritage. Further applications that could be enabled by COSMO-SkyMed data are explored through internal ASI research activity, such as the use of high resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEM) for topographic surveying of archaeological tells and condition assessment to estimate the impact due to natural and anthropogenic threats (e.g. looting, agriculture, destruction). Finally, current perspectives towards operational use and greater user uptake of COSMO-SkyMed for purposes of scientific downstream are opened by the new ASI programme Innovation for Downstream Preparation for Science (I4DP_SCIENCE)

    High-accuracy digital elevation model generation and ship monitoring from synthetic aperture radar images: innovative techniques and experimental results.

    In this Thesis several state-of-the-art and innovative techniques for Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are deeply analyzed, with a special focus on the methods which allow the improvement of the accuracy of the DEM product, which is directly related to the geolocation accuracy of geocoded images and is considered as an enabling factor for a large series of civilian and Defence applications. Furthermore, some of the proposed techniques, which are based both on phase and amplitude information, are experimented on real data, i.e. COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) data, assessing the achievable performances compared with the state-of-the-art, and pointing out and quantitatively highlighting the acquisition and processing strategies which would allow to maximize the quality of the results. Moreover, a critical analysis is performed about the main errors affecting the applied techniques, as well as the limitations of the orbital configurations, identifying several complementary techniques which would allow to overcome or mitigate the observed drawbacks. An innovative procedure for on-demand DEM production from CSK SAR data is elaborated and proposed, as well as an auto-validation technique which would enable the validation of the produced DEM also where vertical ground truths are not available. Based on the obtained results and on the consequent critical analysis, several interferometric specifications for new generation SAR satellites are identified. Finally, a literature review is proposed about the main state-of-the-art ship monitoring techniques, considered as one of the main fields of application which takes benefit from SAR data, based on single/multi-platform multi-channel SAR data, with a focus on TanDEM-X (TDX). In particular, in Chapter 1 the main concepts concerning SAR operating principles are introduced and the main characteristics and performances of CSK and TDX satellite systems are described; in Chapter 2 a review is proposed about the state-of-the-art SAR interferometric techniques for DEM generation, analyzing all the relevant processing steps and deepening the study of the main solutions recently proposed in the literature to increase the accuracy of the interferometric processing; in Chapter 3 complementary and innovative techniques respect to the interferometric processing are analyzed to mitigate disadvantages and to improve performances; in Chapter 4 experimental results are presented, obtained in the generation of high accuracy DEM by applying to a dataset of CSK images properly selected state-of-the-art interferometric techniques and innovative methods to improve DEM accuracy, exploring relevant limitations, and pointing out innovative acquisition and processing strategies. In Chapter 5, the basic principles of Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) are described, focusing on Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA) and Along-Track Interferometry (ATI) techniques
