What use are formal design and analysis methods to telecommunications services?
Have formal methods failed, or will they fail, to help us solve problems of detecting and resolving of feature interactions in telecommunications software? This paper contains SWOT(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis of the use of formula design and analysis methods in feature interaction analysis and makes some suggestions for future research
Reference resolution in multi-modal interaction: Preliminary observations
In this paper we present our research on multimodal interaction in and with virtual environments. The aim of this presentation is to emphasize the necessity to spend more research on reference resolution in multimodal contexts. In multi-modal interaction the human conversational partner can apply more than one modality in conveying his or her message to the environment in which a computer detects and interprets signals from different modalities. We show some naturally arising problems but do not give general solutions. Rather we decide to perform more detailed research on reference resolution in uni-modal contexts to obtain methods generalizable to multi-modal contexts. Since we try to build applications for a Dutch audience and since hardly any research has been done on reference resolution for Dutch, we give results on the resolution of anaphoric and deictic references in Dutch texts. We hope to be able to extend these results to our multimodal contexts later
Managing in conflict: How actors distribute conflict in an industrial network
IMP researchers have examined conflict as a threat to established business relationships and commercial exchanges, drawing on theories and concepts developed in organization studies. We examine cases of conflict in relationships from the oil and gas industry's service sector, focusing on conflicts of interest and resources, and conflict as experienced by actors. Through a comparative case study design, we propose an explanation of how actors manage conflict and manage in conflict given that they tend to value and maintain relationships beyond episodes of exchange. We consider conflicts in relationships from a network perspective, showing that actors experienced these while adapting to changes in their business setting, modifying their roles in that network. By identifying conflict with the organizing forms of relationship and network, we show how actors formulate conflict through pursuing and combining a number of strategies, distributing the conflict across an enlarged network
Socially Aware Motion Planning with Deep Reinforcement Learning
For robotic vehicles to navigate safely and efficiently in pedestrian-rich
environments, it is important to model subtle human behaviors and navigation
rules (e.g., passing on the right). However, while instinctive to humans,
socially compliant navigation is still difficult to quantify due to the
stochasticity in people's behaviors. Existing works are mostly focused on using
feature-matching techniques to describe and imitate human paths, but often do
not generalize well since the feature values can vary from person to person,
and even run to run. This work notes that while it is challenging to directly
specify the details of what to do (precise mechanisms of human navigation), it
is straightforward to specify what not to do (violations of social norms).
Specifically, using deep reinforcement learning, this work develops a
time-efficient navigation policy that respects common social norms. The
proposed method is shown to enable fully autonomous navigation of a robotic
vehicle moving at human walking speed in an environment with many pedestrians.Comment: 8 page
Advancing Dispute Resolution by Unpacking the Sources of Conflict: Toward an Integrated Framework
Organizational leaders, public policy makers, dispute resolution professionals, and scholars have developed diverse methods for resolving workplace conflict. But there is inadequate recognition that the effectiveness of a dispute resolution method depends on its fit with the source of a particular conflict. Consequently, it is essential to better understand where conflict comes from and how this affects dispute resolution. To these ends, this paper uniquely integrates scholarship from multiple disciplines to develop a multi-dimensional framework on the sources of conflict. This provides an important foundation for theorizing and identifying effective dispute resolution methods, which are more important than ever as the changing world of work raises new issues, conflicts, and institutions
An Approach to Model Checking of Multi-agent Data Analysis
The paper presents an approach to verification of a multi-agent data analysis
algorithm. We base correct simulation of the multi-agent system by a finite
integer model. For verification we use model checking tool SPIN. Protocols of
agents are written in Promela language and properties of the multi-agent data
analysis system are expressed in logic LTL. We run several experiments with

Resolving the Identification Problem in Linear Social Interactions Models: Modeling with Between-Group Spillovers
The linear-in-means model has been a theoretical and empirical workhorse of the social interactions field. As was noted by Manski (1993), the collinearity between group-level 'contextual' and 'endogenous' effects leads to an inability to identify the structural parameters of this model. Manski called this the 'reflection' problem. This paper suggests that Manksiâs reflection problem is unique to a special case of a more general context in which agents care about multiple reference groups. A generic architecture and dialogue model for multimodal interaction
This paper presents a generic architecture and a dialogue model for multimodal interaction. Architecture and model are transparent and have been used for different task domains. In this paper the emphasis is on their use for the navigation task in a virtual environment. The dialogue model is based on the information state approach and the recognition of dialogue acts. We explain how pairs of backward and forward looking tags and the preference rules of the dialogue act determiner together determine the structure of the dialogues that can be handled by the system. The system action selection mechanism and the problem of reference resolution are discussed in detail
