Use of AI Techniques for Residential Fire Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
Early residential fire detection is important for prompt extinguishing and reducing damages and life losses. To detect fire, one or a combination of sensors and a detection algorithm are needed. The sensors might be part of a wireless sensor network (WSN) or work independently. The previous research in the area of fire detection using WSN has paid little or no attention to investigate the optimal set of sensors as well as use of learning mechanisms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. They have only made some assumptions on what might be considered as appropriate sensor or an arbitrary AI technique has been used. By closing the gap between traditional fire detection techniques and modern wireless sensor network capabilities, in this paper we present a guideline on choosing the most optimal sensor combinations for accurate residential fire detection. Additionally, applicability of a feed forward neural network (FFNN) and NaĂŻve Bayes Classifier is investigated and results in terms of detection rate and computational complexity are analyzed

Use of wireless sensor networks for distributed event detection in disaster management applications

Recently, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become mature enough to go beyond being simple fine-grained continuous monitoring platforms and have become one of the enabling technologies for early-warning disaster systems. Event detection functionality of WSNs can be of great help and importance for (near) real-time detection of, for example, meteorological natural hazards and wild and residential fires. From the data-mining perspective, many real world events exhibit specific patterns, which can be detected by applying machine learning (ML) techniques. In this paper, we introduce ML techniques for distributed event detection in WSNs and evaluate their performance and applicability for early detection of disasters, specifically residential fires. To this end, we present a distributed event detection approach incorporating a novel reputation-based voting and the decision tree and evaluate its performance in terms of detection accuracy and time complexity

Due to current technological progress, the manufacturing of tiny and low price sensors became technically and economically feasible. Sensors can measure physical surroundings related to the environment and convert them into an electric signal. A huge quantity of these disposable sensors is networked to detect and monitor fire. This paper provides an analysis of utilisation of wireless sensor networks for fire detection and control

Machine Learning in Wireless Sensor Networks: Algorithms, Strategies, and Applications

    Get PDF
Wireless sensor networks monitor dynamic environments that change rapidly over time. This dynamic behavior is either caused by external factors or initiated by the system designers themselves. To adapt to such conditions, sensor networks often adopt machine learning techniques to eliminate the need for unnecessary redesign. Machine learning also inspires many practical solutions that maximize resource utilization and prolong the lifespan of the network. In this paper, we present an extensive literature review over the period 2002-2013 of machine learning methods that were used to address common issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The advantages and disadvantages of each proposed algorithm are evaluated against the corresponding problem. We also provide a comparative guide to aid WSN designers in developing suitable machine learning solutions for their specific application challenges.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

A Brief Review of Machine Learning Algorithms in Forest Fires Science

    Get PDF
Due to the harm forest fires cause to the environment and the economy as they occur more frequently around the world, early fire prediction and detection are necessary. To anticipate and discover forest fires, several technologies and techniques were put forth. To forecast the likelihood of forest fires and evaluate the risk of forest fire-induced damage, artificial intelligence techniques are a crucial enabling technology. In current times, there has been a lot of interest in machine learning techniques. The machine learning methods that are used to identify and forecast forest fires are reviewed in this article. Selecting the best forecasting model is a constant gamble because each ML algorithm has advantages and disadvantages. Our main goal is to discover the research gaps and recent studies that use machine learning techniques to study forest fires. By choosing the best ML techniques based on particular forest characteristics, the current research results boost prediction power
