Processing techniques for improved radar detection in spiky clutter
The problem of improved radar detection of targets embedded in spiky clutter is
addressed. Two main areas where improvements may be possible are investigated,
namely improved clutter suppression by doppler filtering, and improved Constant False
Alarm Rate (CFAR) processing. The clutter suppression performance of several doppler
processors is quantified under a wide range of conditions. It is shown that in spatially
homogeneous clutter ideal optimal (Hsiao) filters offer 2 to 3 dB higher improvement
factor than conventional techniques. Adaptive Hsiao filters are evaluated under conditions
of spatially heterogeneous clutter, and it is shown that practical losses due to filter
adaptivity and spectral heterogeneity will outweigh the superior performance of ideal
Hsiao filters in homogeneous clutter. It is concluded that improved doppler filtering
offers little scope for improving detection performance in spiky clutter, and that more
significant benefits are to be gained through improved CFAR processing. The performance
of three current generation CFAR processors is evaluated in spatially uncorrelated
K-distributed clutter to quantify detection losses. It is shown that losses of in excess of
10 dB can be expected in spiky clutter. Reducing the loss by exploitation of any spatial
correlation of the underlying clutter power is investigated. To this end a mathematically
rigorous model for spatially correlated K-distributed clutter is derived. An improved
CFAR processor based on optimal weighting of reference cells is formulated and
evaluated. It is shown that in highly correlated clutter CFAR loss can be reduced by 2 to
5 dB compared to Cell Averaging CFAR processors. An alternative "RDT-CFAR"
processor is formulated to eliminate reliance on spatial correlation, and this is shown to
reduce CFAR loss by more than 10 dB in spectrally homogeneous spiky clutter.
However, an increase in false alarm rate in clutter without constant spectrum is
demonstrated. The RDT-CFAR processor has been modified to eliminate dependence on
surrounding range bins. The resulting "δ-CFAR" processor reduces CFAR loss by more
than 10 dB in even moderately spiky clutter. It is also immune to extraneous targets and
clutter edges, and its false alarm performance is insensitive to clutter spikiness
Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems
To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second.
In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation.
The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung für automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewältigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen für hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende Stückzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest für die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde.
In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen für zukünftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der Echtzeitfähigkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei größere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und Winkelschätzung.
Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren
GNSS-based passive radar techniques for maritime surveillance
The improvement of maritime traffic safety and security is a subject of growing interest, since the traffic is constantly increasing. In fact, a large number of human activities take place in maritime domain, varying from cruise and trading ships up to vessels involved in nefarious activities such as piracy, human smuggling or terrorist actions. The systems based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder cannot cope with non-cooperative or non-equipped vessels that instead can be detected, tracked and identified by means of radar system. In particular, passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems can perform these tasks without a dedicated transmitter, since they exploit illuminators of opportunity as transmitters. The lack of a dedicated transmitter makes such systems low cost and suitable to be employed in areas where active sensors cannot be placed such as, for example, marine protected areas. Innovative solutions based on terrestrial transmitters have been considered in order to increase maritime safety and security, but these kinds of sources cannot guarantee a global coverage, such as in open sea. To overcome this problem, the exploitation of global navigation satellites system (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity is a prospective solution. The global, reliable and persistent nature of these sources makes them potentially able to guarantee the permanent monitoring of both coastal and open sea areas.
To this aim, this thesis addresses the exploitation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity in passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems for maritime surveillance. The main limitation of this technology is the restricted power budget provided by navigation satellites, which makes it necessary to define innovative moving target detection techniques specifically tailored for the system under consideration. For this reason, this thesis puts forward long integration time techniques able to collect the signal energy over long time intervals (tens of seconds), allowing the retrieval of suitable levels of signal-to-disturbance ratios for detection purposes.
The feasibility of this novel application is firstly investigated in a bistatic system configuration. A long integration time moving target detection technique working in bistatic range&Doppler plane is proposed and its effectiveness is proved against synthetic and experimental datasets. Subsequently the exploitation of multiple transmitters for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea is also investigated. A single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration is proposed. Furthermore, the potential of the system to extract information concerning the detected target characteristics for further target classification is assessed
Spectrum sensing and occupancy prediction for cognitive machine-to-machine wireless networks

Dynamic Spectrum
Access (DSA) has been proposed as a means of improving the spectrum utilisation of wireless systems. Based on the Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm, DSA enables unlicensed spectrum users to sense their spectral environment and adapt their operational parameters to opportunistically access any temporally unoccupied bands without causing interference to the primary spectrum users. In the same context, CR inspired Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have recently been proposed as a potential solution to the spectrum utilisation problem, which has been driven by the ever increasing number of interconnected devices. M2M communications introduce new challenges for CR in terms of operational environments and design requirements. With spectrum sensing being the key function for CR, this
thesis investigates the performance of spectrum sensing and proposes novel sensing approaches and models to address the sensing problem for cognitive M2M deployments.
In this thesis, the behaviour of Energy Detection (ED) spectrum sensing for cognitive M2M nodes is modelled using the two-wave with dffi use power fading model. This channel model can describe a variety of realistic fading conditions including
worse than Rayleigh scenarios that are expected to occur within the operational environments of cognitive M2M communication systems. The results suggest that ED based spectrum sensing fails to meet the sensing requirements over worse than Rayleigh conditions and consequently requires the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to be increased by up to 137%. However, by employing appropriate diversity and node
cooperation techniques, the sensing performance can be improved by up to 11.5dB in terms of the required SNR. These results are particularly useful in analysing the eff ects of severe fading in cognitive M2M systems and thus they can be used
to design effi cient CR transceivers and to quantify the trade-o s between detection performance and energy e fficiency.
A novel predictive spectrum sensing scheme that exploits historical data of past sensing events to predict channel occupancy is proposed and analysed. This approach allows CR terminals to sense only the channels that are predicted to be
unoccupied rather than the whole band of interest. Based on this approach, a spectrum occupancy predictor is developed and experimentally validated. The proposed scheme achieves a prediction accuracy of up to 93% which in turn can lead to up to
84% reduction of the spectrum sensing cost. Furthermore, a novel probabilistic model for describing the channel availability
in both the vertical and horizontal polarisations is developed. The proposed model is validated based on a measurement campaign for operational scenarios where CR terminals may change their polarisation during their operation. A Gaussian approximation is used to model the empirical channel availability data with more than 95% confi dence bounds. The proposed model can be used as a means of improving
spectrum sensing performance by using statistical knowledge on the primary users occupancy pattern

Adaptive Coded Modulation Classification and Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems. Adaptive Coded Modulation Techniques for Cognitive Radio Using Kalman Filter and Interacting Multiple Model Methods
The current and future trends of modern wireless communication systems place heavy demands on fast data transmissions in order to satisfy end users’ requirements anytime, anywhere. Such demands are obvious in recent applications such as smart phones, long term evolution (LTE), 4 & 5 Generations (4G & 5G), and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) platforms, where robust coding and modulations are essential especially in streaming on-line video material, social media and gaming. This eventually resulted in extreme exhaustion imposed on the frequency spectrum as a rare natural resource due to stagnation in current spectrum management policies. Since its advent in the late 1990s, cognitive radio (CR) has been conceived as an enabling technology aiming at the efficient utilisation of frequency spectrum that can lead to potential direct spectrum access (DSA) management. This is mainly attributed to its internal capabilities inherited from the concept of software defined radio (SDR) to sniff its surroundings, learn and adapt its operational parameters accordingly. CR systems (CRs) may commonly comprise one or all of the following core engines that characterise their architectures; namely, adaptive coded modulation (ACM), automatic modulation classification (AMC) and spectrum sensing (SS).
Motivated by the above challenges, this programme of research is primarily aimed at the design and development of new paradigms to help improve the adaptability of CRs and thereby achieve the desirable signal processing tasks at the physical layer of the above core engines. Approximate modelling of Rayleigh and finite state Markov channels (FSMC) with a new concept borrowed from econometric studies have been approached. Then insightful channel estimation by using Kalman filter (KF) augmented with interacting multiple model (IMM) has been examined for the purpose of robust adaptability, which is applied for the first time in wireless communication systems. Such new IMM-KF combination has been facilitated in the feedback channel between wireless transmitter and receiver to adjust the transmitted power, by using a water-filling (WF) technique, and constellation pattern and rate in the ACM algorithm. The AMC has also benefited from such IMM-KF integration to boost the performance against conventional parametric estimation methods such as maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for channel interrogation and the estimated parameters of both inserted into the ML classification algorithm. Expectation-maximisation (EM) has been applied to examine unknown transmitted modulation sequences and channel parameters in tandem. Finally, the non-parametric multitaper method (MTM) has been thoroughly examined for spectrum estimation (SE) and SS, by relying on Neyman-Pearson (NP) detection principle for hypothesis test, to allow licensed primary users (PUs) to coexist with opportunistic unlicensed secondary users (SUs) in the same frequency bands of interest without harmful effects. The performance of the above newly suggested paradigms have been simulated and assessed under various transmission settings and revealed substantial improvements
Non Co-Operative Detection of LPI/LPD Signals Via Cyclic Spectral Analysis
This research proposes and evaluates a novel technique for detecting LPI/LPD communication signals using a digital receiver primarily designed to detect radar signals, such as a Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) or an Electronic Support Measures (ESM) receiver. The proposed Cyclic Spectrum Analysis (CSA) receiver is a robust detector that takes advantage of the spectral correlation properties of second-order cyclostationary signals. A computationally efficient algorithm is used to estimate the Spectral Correlation Function (SCF). Using state-of-the-art FFT processing, it is expected that the proposed CSA receiver architecture could estimate the entire cyclic spectrum m approximately 0.6 ms. The estimate is then reduced to an energy related test statistic that is valid for all cycle frequencies within the receiver bandwidth. By producing an estimate of the cyclic spectrum, the CSA receiver also benefits post-detection tasks such as signal classification and exploitation. As modeled, the ideal CSA receiver detection performance is within 1.0 dB of the radiometer in benign signal environments and consistently outperforms the radiometer in adverse signal environments. The effect on detection performance when the CSA receiver is implemented with channelized and quadrature digital receiver architectures is also examined
A Case Study in Physical-Layer Steganography Applied to Multicarrier Transmissions
Covert communications can be a force for good, such as providing a means of message authentication to prevent malicious actors from spoofing networks. This dissertation explores the design of a covert signal to be hidden inside the bandwidth of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal. In order to make detection by unintended observers as difficult as possible, the covert signal operates as interference inside the OFDM signal and is set to a high Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR). Given the high SIR, the OFDM signal must be cancelled in order to recover the covert signal. The detectability of the covert signal is tested using multiple detectors with and without cancellation. Among the detectors used is a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) designed for image classification that has been repurposed through transfer learning to detect signal activity in noise and interference. The CNN detector demonstrates resilience in the presence of narrowband interference. The cancellation algorithm is enhanced with an estimate of OFDM windowing as applied at the transmitter, which is an often-overlooked parameter in cancellation applications. The enhanced cancellation-algorithm improves the cancellation of OFDM signals by 5.3 dB in an over-the-air test. The enhanced cancellation-algorithm also improves the Packet Error Rate of OFDM signals and improves the recovery of the covert signal. The improved recovery has direct application to Power-Domain Non-orthogonal Multiple Access and Rate-Splitting Multiple Access, which both rely on successive interference cancellation. Lastly, to frustrate any efforts to analyze the covert waveform, the covert signal is augmented with an adversarial waveform designed to exploit weaknesses in CNNs used for modulation classification. The classification system suffers from uncertainty in the bandwidth estimate of the covert signal. The system will likely err on the side of making the bandwidth wider than necessary. It is demonstrated that a wider bandwidth makes the attack more successful, as opposed to other estimation errors which prior literature has shown to weaken the effectiveness of these attacks
Spectrum sensing for cognitive radio and radar systems
The use of the radio frequency spectrum is increasing at a rapid rate. Reliable and efficient operation in a crowded radio spectrum requires innovative solutions and techniques. Future wireless communication and radar systems should be aware of their surrounding radio environment in order to have the ability to adapt their operation to the effective situation. Spectrum sensing techniques such as detection, waveform recognition, and specific emitter identification are key sources of information for characterizing the surrounding radio environment and extracting valuable information, and consequently adjusting transceiver parameters for facilitating flexible, efficient, and reliable operation.
In this thesis, spectrum sensing algorithms for cognitive radios and radar intercept receivers are proposed. Single-user and collaborative cyclostationarity-based detection algorithms are proposed: Multicycle detectors and robust nonparametric spatial sign cyclic correlation based fixed sample size and sequential detectors are proposed. Asymptotic distributions of the test statistics under the null hypothesis are established. A censoring scheme in which only informative test statistics are transmitted to the fusion center is proposed for collaborative detection. The proposed detectors and methods have the following benefits: employing cyclostationarity enables distinction among different systems, collaboration mitigates the effects of shadowing and multipath fading, using multiple strong cyclic frequencies improves the performance, robust detection provides reliable performance in heavy-tailed non-Gaussian noise, sequential detection reduces the average detection time, and censoring improves energy efficiency.
In addition, a radar waveform recognition system for classifying common pulse compression waveforms is developed. The proposed supervised classification system classifies an intercepted radar pulse to one of eight different classes based on the pulse compression waveform: linear frequency modulation, Costas frequency codes, binary codes, as well as Frank, P1, P2, P3, and P4 polyphase codes.
A robust M-estimation based method for radar emitter identification is proposed as well. A common modulation profile from a group of intercepted pulses is estimated and used for identifying the radar emitter. The M-estimation based approach provides robustness against preprocessing errors and deviations from the assumed noise model
