    A Survey on Forensics and Compliance Auditing for Critical Infrastructure Protection

    The broadening dependency and reliance that modern societies have on essential services provided by Critical Infrastructures is increasing the relevance of their trustworthiness. However, Critical Infrastructures are attractive targets for cyberattacks, due to the potential for considerable impact, not just at the economic level but also in terms of physical damage and even loss of human life. Complementing traditional security mechanisms, forensics and compliance audit processes play an important role in ensuring Critical Infrastructure trustworthiness. Compliance auditing contributes to checking if security measures are in place and compliant with standards and internal policies. Forensics assist the investigation of past security incidents. Since these two areas significantly overlap, in terms of data sources, tools and techniques, they can be merged into unified Forensics and Compliance Auditing (FCA) frameworks. In this paper, we survey the latest developments, methodologies, challenges, and solutions addressing forensics and compliance auditing in the scope of Critical Infrastructure Protection. This survey focuses on relevant contributions, capable of tackling the requirements imposed by massively distributed and complex Industrial Automation and Control Systems, in terms of handling large volumes of heterogeneous data (that can be noisy, ambiguous, and redundant) for analytic purposes, with adequate performance and reliability. The achieved results produced a taxonomy in the field of FCA whose key categories denote the relevant topics in the literature. Also, the collected knowledge resulted in the establishment of a reference FCA architecture, proposed as a generic template for a converged platform.     Deep generative models for network data synthesis and monitoring

    Measurement and monitoring are fundamental tasks in all networks, enabling the down-stream management and optimization of the network. Although networks inherently have abundant amounts of monitoring data, its access and effective measurement is another story. The challenges exist in many aspects. First, the inaccessibility of network monitoring data for external users, and it is hard to provide a high-fidelity dataset without leaking commercial sensitive information. Second, it could be very expensive to carry out effective data collection to cover a large-scale network system, considering the size of network growing, i.e., cell number of radio network and the number of flows in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) network. Third, it is difficult to ensure fidelity and efficiency simultaneously in network monitoring, as the available resources in the network element that can be applied to support the measurement function are too limited to implement sophisticated mechanisms. Finally, understanding and explaining the behavior of the network becomes challenging due to its size and complex structure. Various emerging optimization-based solutions (e.g., compressive sensing) or data-driven solutions (e.g. deep learning) have been proposed for the aforementioned challenges. However, the fidelity and efficiency of existing methods cannot yet meet the current network requirements. The contributions made in this thesis significantly advance the state of the art in the domain of network measurement and monitoring techniques. Overall, we leverage cutting-edge machine learning technology, deep generative modeling, throughout the entire thesis. First, we design and realize APPSHOT , an efficient city-scale network traffic sharing with a conditional generative model, which only requires open-source contextual data during inference (e.g., land use information and population distribution). Second, we develop an efficient drive testing system — GENDT, based on generative model, which combines graph neural networks, conditional generation, and quantified model uncertainty to enhance the efficiency of mobile drive testing. Third, we design and implement DISTILGAN, a high-fidelity, efficient, versatile, and real-time network telemetry system with latent GANs and spectral-temporal networks. Finally, we propose SPOTLIGHT , an accurate, explainable, and efficient anomaly detection system of the Open RAN (Radio Access Network) system. The lessons learned through this research are summarized, and interesting topics are discussed for future work in this domain. All proposed solutions have been evaluated with real-world datasets and applied to support different applications in real systems

    Learning Interpretable Models of Aircraft Handling Behaviour by Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback

    We propose a method to capture the handling abilities of fast jet pilots in a software model via reinforcement learning (RL) from human preference feedback. We use pairwise preferences over simulated flight trajectories to learn an interpretable rule-based model called a reward tree, which enables the automated scoring of trajectories alongside an explanatory rationale. We train an RL agent to execute high-quality handling behaviour by using the reward tree as the objective, and thereby generate data for iterative preference collection and further refinement of both tree and agent. Experiments with synthetic preferences show reward trees to be competitive with uninterpretable neural network reward models on quantitative and qualitative evaluations

    Deep Clustering for Data Cleaning and Integration

    Deep Learning (DL) techniques now constitute the state-of-theart for important problems in areas such as text and image processing, and there have been impactful results that deploy DL in several data management tasks. Deep Clustering (DC) has recently emerged as a sub-discipline of DL, in which data representations are learned in tandem with clustering, with a view to automatically identifying the features of the data that lead to improved clustering results. While DC has been used to good effect in several domains, particularly in image processing, the potential of DC for data management tasks remains unexplored. In this paper, we address this gap by investigating the suitability of DC for data cleaning and integration tasks, specifically schema inference, entity resolution and domain discovery, from the perspective of tables, rows and columns, respectively. In this setting, we compare and contrast several DC and non-DC clustering algorithms using standard benchmarks. The results show, among other things, that the most effective DC algorithms consistently outperform non-DC clustering algorithms for data integration tasks. Experiments also show consistently strong performance compared with state-of-the-art bespoke algorithms for each of the data integration tasks

    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.     Essays on Corporate Disclosure of Value Creation

    Information on a firm’s business model helps investors understand an entity’s resource requirements, priorities for action, and prospects (FASB, 2001, pp. 14-15; IASB, 2010, p. 12). Disclosures of strategy and business model (SBM) are therefore considered a central element of effective annual report commentary (Guillaume, 2018; IIRC, 2011). By applying natural language processing techniques, I explore what SBM disclosures look like when management are pressed to say something, analyse determinants of cross-sectional variation in SBM reporting properties, and assess whether and how managers respond to regulatory interventions seeking to promote SBM annual report commentary. This dissertation contains three main chapters. Chapter 2 presents a systematic review of the academic literature on non-financial reporting and the emerging literature on SBM reporting. Here, I also introduce my institutional setting. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 form the empirical sections of this thesis. In Chapter 3, I construct the first large sample corpus of SBM annual report commentary and provide the first systematic analysis of the properties of such disclosures. My topic modelling analysis rejects the hypothesis that such disclosure is merely padding; instead finding themes align with popular strategy frameworks and management tailor the mix of SBM topics to reflect their unique approach to value creation. However, SBM commentary is less specific, less precise about time horizon (short- and long-term), and less balanced (more positive) in tone relative to general management commentary. My findings suggest symbolic compliance and legitimisation characterize the typical annual report discussion of SBM. Further analysis identifies proprietary cost considerations and obfuscation incentives as key determinants of symbolic reporting. In Chapter 4, I seek evidence on how managers respond to regulatory mandates by adapting the properties of disclosure and investigate whether the form of the mandate matters. Using a differences-in-differences research design, my results suggest a modest incremental response by treatment firms to the introduction of a comply or explain provision to provide disclosure on strategy and business model. In contrast, I find a substantial response to enacting the same requirements in law. My analysis provides clear and consistent evidence that treatment firms incrementally increase the volume of SBM disclosure, improve coverage across a broad range of topics as well as providing commentary with greater focus on the long term. My results point to substantial changes in SBM reporting properties following regulatory mandates, but the form of the mandate does matter. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the accounting literature by examining how firms discuss a central topic to economic decision making in annual reports and how firms respond to different forms of disclosure mandate. Furthermore, the results of my analysis are likely to be of value for regulators and policymakers currently reviewing or considering mandating disclosure requirements. By examining how companies adapt their reporting to different types of regulations, this study provides an empirical basis for recalibrating SBM disclosure mandates, thereby enhancing the information set of capital market participants and promoting stakeholder engagement in a landscape increasingly shaped by non-financial information

    Conceptualising adolescents’ pro-environmental behaviour: an exploration in Cyprus with reference to Scotland

    There is now a global ecological and environmental crisis of unprecedented magnitude, severity and scale, which threatens current and future generations’ well-being. Given the influence of human behaviour on the natural environment addressing current and future environmental issues requires changes in our behaviour. In order to enhance and promote pro-environmental behaviours, one must understand what determines and influences behaviour. This is especially important to consider in adolescents (12-19 years old) given that young people will become those responsible for future environmental protection and will be facing future environmental issues. Whilst previous studies, behavioural models and theoretical frameworks have identified a number of potential behaviour determinants and potential influences, there is still confusion in the literature regarding their definitions and their exact role in determining behaviour. Additionally, despite the successful application of behavioural models, complexities and interrelations between behaviour, determinants and influences have been identified complicating understanding. Also, differences in operationalisation and interpretation of models further complicate conclusions. To conceptualise adolescents’ pro-environmental behaviours, this research explored and evaluated adolescents’ pro-environmental behaviour and behaviour determinants (i.e., environmental attitudes and knowledge), their potential influences (i.e., nature and biodiversity perceptions, nature experiences, connections with nature and current and preferred environmental education practices) and identified potential relationships within and between them. This allowed for further insights regarding how these are understood, the incorporation and simultaneous exploration of a number of determinants and influences from different behavioural models and frameworks and also the exploration of relationships within and between models and frameworks and with pro-environmental behaviours enhancing our current understanding. This research adopted a multiple case study design approach in two different socio-cultural settings, Cyprus and Scotland, with a focus on Cyprus and employed mixed research methods in two data collection phases. Phase one explored and described phenomena in both Cyprus and Scotland. It involved group discussions with 24 groups of 4-8 adolescents, and used A2 posters as a discussion schedule on which participants recorded their ideas. Based on findings from phase one, phase two evaluated and explored phenomena in further depth and identified potential relationships between them. It involved questionnaires with adolescents (Scotland: N=40, Cyprus: N=475) and semi-structured interviews with 5 teachers in Cyprus. Phase two also involved the actualisation of adolescents’ environmental education preferences. This consisted of outdoor environmental education activities with adolescents (Scotland=1 group, Cyprus=7 groups) which were evaluated using questionnaires before and after they took place. Results provide support for previous scholars’ claims regarding the multidimensionality and complexity of pro-environmental behaviours and behaviour determinants whilst also indicating differences in variable aspects. Particularly, whilst some adolescents were able to identify pro-environmental behaviours, were concerned about issues, perceived issues as important and had some environmental knowledge, this was not true for everyone. Results also indicated differences in how often individuals undertake different behaviours, differences in perceptions regarding the importance of different issues, differences in attitudes towards different behaviours, differences in reasoning for being concerned and for undertaking the different behaviours. Moreover, results indicated a number of statistically significant relationships within and between some but not all behaviours and determinants. Additionally, results also provide support for previous scholars’ claims regarding the multidimensionality and complexity of potential influences and indicated the existence of relationships between aspects of the different influences and pro-environmental behaviour and behaviour determinants. With regards to nature perceptions the results indicated a focus on the absence of humans and differences in how different areas are perceived. For contact with nature, the results indicated differences in the levels of engagement with different outdoor areas and differing perceptions of whether nature can be experienced indoors. Results regarding nature connections, indicated strong personal nature connections and a negative relationship between humans and nature. The results also indicated a lack of environmental education courses undertaken by adolescents and as part of the Cyprus school curriculum, the consideration of courses such as Geography and Biology as environmental education courses and preferences by adolescents and educators regarding what environmental education practices should consist of. Additionally, results indicated a number of statistically significant relationships between pro-environmental behaviour, determinants and potential influences. Moreover, this research also indicated that designing environmental education activities based on adolescents’ preferences is achievable and the research’s approach can act as a methodological starting point for developing and evaluating future initiatives based on participatory approaches. The examination of adolescents’ and educators’ current and preferred environmental education practices allowed for the identification of several practice recommendations. Particularly, this research advocates (a) the incorporation of courses focused on environmental education in school curricula, reducing bureaucracy issues and dependence on teachers’ initiatives for course development; (b) the consideration of adolescents’ preferences and adolescents involvement in course design; (c) undertaking courses in both indoor and outdoor locales; (d) consideration of educators’ inputs when planning, and with regards to topic, locale and speaker selection; (e) the incorporation of hands-on, fun, interesting and researching activities and (f) the involvement of educators/speakers who are passionate, relatable and kind-hearted. This research advocates the unravelling and evaluation of the multidimensionality of behaviours, determinants and influences; the combination of behavioural models and frameworks and the evaluation of variables potential effects; and the use of socio-ecological frameworks to conceptualise pro-environmental behaviours in different contexts

    Design of new algorithms for gene network reconstruction applied to in silico modeling of biomedical data

The success of current therapies is limited because persistent diseases are frequently treated based on their symptoms rather than the underlying cause of the disease. Therefore, biomedical research is experiencing a technology-driven shift to data-driven holistic approaches to better characterize the molecular mechanisms causing disease. Using omics data as an input, emerging disciplines like network biology attempt to model the relationships between biomolecules. To this effect, gene co- expression networks arise as a promising tool for deciphering the relationships between genes in large transcriptomic datasets. However, because of their low specificity and high false positive rate, they demonstrate a limited capacity to retrieve the disrupted mechanisms that lead to disease onset, progression, and maintenance. Within the context of statistical modeling, we dove deeper into the reconstruction of gene co-expression networks with the specific goal of discovering disease-specific features directly from expression data. Using ensemble techniques, which combine the results of various metrics, we were able to more precisely capture biologically significant relationships between genes. We were able to find de novo potential disease-specific features with the help of prior biological knowledge and the development of new network inference techniques. Through our different approaches, we analyzed large gene sets across multiple samples and used gene expression as a surrogate marker for the inherent biological processes, reconstructing robust gene co-expression networks that are simple to explore. By mining disease-specific gene co-expression networks we come up with a useful framework for identifying new omics-phenotype associations from conditional expression datasets.In this sense, understanding diseases from the perspective of biological network perturbations will improve personalized medicine, impacting rational biomarker discovery, patient stratification and drug design, and ultimately leading to more targeted therapies.Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla.     Learning and Control of Dynamical Systems

    Despite the remarkable success of machine learning in various domains in recent years, our understanding of its fundamental limitations remains incomplete. This knowledge gap poses a grand challenge when deploying machine learning methods in critical decision-making tasks, where incorrect decisions can have catastrophic consequences. To effectively utilize these learning-based methods in such contexts, it is crucial to explicitly characterize their performance. Over the years, significant research efforts have been dedicated to learning and control of dynamical systems where the underlying dynamics are unknown or only partially known a priori, and must be inferred from collected data. However, much of these classical results have focused on asymptotic guarantees, providing limited insights into the amount of data required to achieve desired control performance while satisfying operational constraints such as safety and stability, especially in the presence of statistical noise. In this thesis, we study the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems. By utilizing recent advances in statistical learning theory, high-dimensional statistics, and control theoretic tools, we aim to establish a fundamental understanding of the number of samples required to achieve desired (i) accuracy in learning the unknown dynamics, (ii) performance in the control of the underlying system, and (iii) satisfaction of the operational constraints such as safety and stability. We provide finite-sample guarantees for these objectives and propose efficient learning and control algorithms that achieve the desired performance at these statistical limits in various dynamical systems. Our investigation covers a broad range of dynamical systems, starting from fully observable linear dynamical systems to partially observable linear dynamical systems, and ultimately, nonlinear systems. We deploy our learning and control algorithms in various adaptive control tasks in real-world control systems and demonstrate their strong empirical performance along with their learning, robustness, and stability guarantees. In particular, we implement one of our proposed methods, Fourier Adaptive Learning and Control (FALCON), on an experimental aerodynamic testbed under extreme turbulent flow dynamics in a wind tunnel. The results show that FALCON achieves state-of-the-art stabilization performance and consistently outperforms conventional and other learning-based methods by at least 37%, despite using 8 times less data. The superior performance of FALCON arises from its physically and theoretically accurate modeling of the underlying nonlinear turbulent dynamics, which yields rigorous finite-sample learning and performance guarantees. These findings underscore the importance of characterizing the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems.</p
