    DeepPos: Deep Supervised Autoencoder Network for CSI Based Indoor Localization

    The widespread mobile devices facilitated the emergence of many new applications and services. Among them are location-based services (LBS) that provide services based on user's location. Several techniques have been presented to enable LBS even in indoor environments where Global Positioning System (GPS) has low localization accuracy. These methods use some environment measurements (like Channel State Information (CSI) or Received Signal Strength (RSS)) for user localization. In this paper, we will use CSI and a novel deep learning algorithm to design a robust and efficient system for indoor localization. More precisely, we use supervised autoencoder (SAE) to model the environment using the data collected during the training phase. Then, during the testing phase, we use the trained model and estimate the coordinates of the unknown point by checking different possible labels. Unlike the previous fingerprinting approaches, in this work, we do not store the {CSI/RSS} of fingerprints and instead we model the environment only with a single SAE. The performance of the proposed scheme is then evaluated in two indoor environments and compared with that of similar approaches.Comment: 10 pages, 15 Figure

    A survey of deep learning approaches for WiFi-based indoor positioning

    One of the most popular approaches for indoor positioning is WiFi fingerprinting, which has been intrinsically tackled as a traditional machine learning problem since the beginning, to achieve a few metres of accuracy on average. In recent years, deep learning has emerged as an alternative approach, with a large number of publications reporting sub-metre positioning accuracy. Therefore, this survey presents a timely, comprehensive review of the most interesting deep learning methods being used for WiFi fingerprinting. In doing so, we aim to identify the most efficient neural networks, under a variety of positioning evaluation metrics for different readers. We will demonstrate that despite the new emerging WiFi signal measures (i.e. CSI and RTT), RSS produces competitive performances under deep learning. We will also show that simple neural networks outperform more complex ones in certain environments

    Generalizable Deep-Learning-Based Wireless Indoor Localization

    The growing interest in indoor localization has been driven by its wide range of applications in areas such as smart homes, industrial automation, and healthcare. With the increasing reliance on wireless devices for location-based services, accurate estimation of device positions within indoor environments has become crucial. Deep learning approaches have shown promise in leveraging wireless parameters like Channel State Information (CSI) and Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) to achieve precise localization. However, despite their success in achieving high accuracy, these deep learning models suffer from limited generalizability, making them unsuitable for deployment in new or dynamic environments without retraining. To address the generalizability challenge faced by conventionally trained deep learning localization models, we propose the use of meta-learning-based approaches. By leveraging meta-learning, we aim to improve the models\u27 ability to adapt to new environments without extensive retraining. Additionally, since meta-learning algorithms typically require diverse datasets from various scenarios, which can be difficult to collect specifically for localization tasks, we introduce a novel meta-learning algorithm called TB-MAML (Task Biased Model Agnostic Meta Learning). This algorithm is specifically designed to enhance generalization when dealing with limited datasets. Finally, we conduct an evaluation to compare the performance of TB-MAML-based localization with conventionally trained localization models and other meta-learning algorithms in the context of indoor localization

    Deep Learning Methods for Fingerprint-Based Indoor and Outdoor Positioning

    Outdoor positioning systems based on the Global Navigation Satellite System have several shortcomings that have deemed their use for indoor positioning impractical. Location fingerprinting, which utilizes machine learning, has emerged as a viable method and solution for indoor positioning due to its simple concept and accurate performance. In the past, shallow learning algorithms were traditionally used in location fingerprinting. Recently, the research community started utilizing deep learning methods for fingerprinting after witnessing the great success and superiority these methods have over traditional/shallow machine learning algorithms. The contribution of this dissertation is fourfold: First, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based method for localizing a smartwatch indoors using geomagnetic field measurements is presented. The proposed method was tested on real world data in an indoor environment composed of three corridors of different lengths and three rooms of different sizes. Experimental results show a promising location classification accuracy of 97.77% with a mean localization error of 0.14 meter (m). Second, a method that makes use of cellular signals emitting from a serving eNodeB to provide symbolic indoor positioning is presented. The proposed method utilizes Denoising Autoencoders (DAEs) to mitigate the effects of cellular signal loss. The proposed method was evaluated using real-world data collected from two different smartphones inside a representative apartment of eight symbolic spaces. Experimental results verify that the proposed method outperforms conventional symbolic indoor positioning techniques in various performance metrics. Third, an investigation is conducted to determine whether Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Conditional Variational Autoencoders (CVAEs) are able to learn the distribution of the minority symbolic spaces, for a highly imbalanced fingerprinting dataset, so as to generate synthetic fingerprints that promote enhancements in a classifier\u27s performance. Experimental results show that this is indeed the case. By using various performance evaluation metrics, the achieved results are compared to those obtained by two state-of-the-art oversampling methods known as Synthetic Minority Oversampling TEchnique (SMOTE) and ADAptive SYNthetic (ADASYN) sampling. Fourth, a novel dataset of outdoor location fingerprints is presented. The proposed dataset, named OutFin, addresses the lack of publicly available datasets that researchers can use to develop, evaluate, and compare fingerprint-based positioning solutions which can constitute a high entry barrier for studies. OutFin is comprised of diverse data types such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular signal strengths, in addition to measurements from various sensors including the magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, and ambient light sensor. The collection area spanned four dispersed sites with a total of 122 Reference Points (RPs). Before OutFin was made available to the public, several experiments were conducted to validate its technical quality

    KF-Loc: A Kalman Filter and Machine Learning Integrated Localization System Using Consumer-Grade Millimeter-wave Hardware

    With the ever-increasing demands of e-commerce, the need for smarter warehousing is increasing exponentially. Such warehouses requires industry automation beyond Industry 4.0. In this work, we use consumer-grade millimeter-wave (mmWave) equipment to enable fast, and low-cost implementation of our localization system. However, the consumer-grade mmWave routers suffer from coarse-grained channel state information due to cost-effective antenna array design limiting the accuracy of localization systems. To address these challenges, we present a Machine Learning (ML) and Kalman Filter (KF) integrated localization system (KF-Loc). The ML model learns the complex wireless features for predicting the static position of the robot. When in dynamic motion, the static ML estimates suffer from position mispredictions, resulting in loss of accuracy. To overcome the loss in accuracy, we design and integrate a KF that learns the dynamics of the robot motion to provide highly accurate tracking. Our system achieves centimeter-level accuracy for the two aisles with RMSE of 0.35m and 0.37m, respectively. Further, compared with ML only localization systems, we achieve a significant reduction in RMSE by 28.5% and 54.3% within the two aisles
