    Transverse jet-cavity interactions with the influence of an impinging shock

    For high-speed air breathing engines, fuel injection and subsequent mixing with air is paramount for combustion. The high freestream velocity poses a great challenge to efficient mixing both in macroscale and microscale. Utilising cavities downstream of fuel injection locations, as a means to hold the flow and stabilise the combustion, is one mechanism which has attracted much attention, requiring further research to study the unsteady flow features and interactions occurring within the cavity. In this study we combine the transverse jet injection upstream of a cavity with an impinging shock to see how this interaction influences the cavity flow, since impinging shocks have been shown to enhance mixing of transverse jets. Utilising qualitative and quantitative methods: schlieren, oilflow, PIV, and PSP the induced flowfield is analysed. The impinging shock lifts the shear layer over the cavity and combined with the instabilities generated by the transverse jet creates a highly complicated flowfield with numerous vertical structures. The interaction between the oblique shock and the jet leads to a relatively uniform velocity distribution within the cavity

    Development and application of unified algorithms for problems in computational science

    A framework is presented for developing computationally unified numerical algorithms for solving nonlinear equations that arise in modeling various problems in mathematical physics. The concept of computational unification is an attempt to encompass efficient solution procedures for computing various nonlinear phenomena that may occur in a given problem. For example, in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a unified algorithm will be one that allows for solutions to subsonic (elliptic), transonic (mixed elliptic-hyperbolic), and supersonic (hyperbolic) flows for both steady and unsteady problems. The objectives are: development of superior unified algorithms emphasizing accuracy and efficiency aspects; development of codes based on selected algorithms leading to validation; application of mature codes to realistic problems; and extension/application of CFD-based algorithms to problems in other areas of mathematical physics. The ultimate objective is to achieve integration of multidisciplinary technologies to enhance synergism in the design process through computational simulation.     Pressure Bifurcation Phenomenon on Supersonic Blowing Trailing Edges

    Turbine blades operating in transonic-supersonic regime develop a complex shock wave system at the trailing edge, a phenomenon that leads to unfavorable pressure perturbations downstream and can interact with other turbine stages. Understanding the fluid behavior of the area adjacent to the trailing edge is essential in order to determine the parameters that have influence on these pressure fluctuations. Colder flow, bled from the high-pressure compressor, is often purged at the trailing edge to cool the thin blade edges, affecting the flow behavior and modulating the intensity and angle of the shock waves system. However, this purge flow can sometimes generate non-symmetrical configurations due to a pressure difference that is provoked by the injected flow. In this work, a combination of RANS simulations and global stability analysis is employed to explain the physical reasons of this flow bifurcation. Analyzing the features that naturally appear in the flow and become dominant for some value of the parameters involved in the problem, an anti-symmetrical global mode, related to the sudden geometrical expansion of the trailing edge slot, is identified as the main mechanism that forces the changes in the flow topology.Comment: Submitted to AIAA Journa

    Advancements have occurred in transonic numerical simulation that place aerodynamic performance design into a relatively well developed status. Efficient broad band operating characteristics can be reliably developed at the conceptual design level. Recent aeroelastic and separated flow simulation results indicate that systematic consideration of an increased range of design problems appears promising. This emerging capability addresses static and dynamic structural/aerodynamic coupling and nonlinearities associated with viscous dominated flows

    Experimental investigation of unsteadiness in transonic shock boundary layer interaction

    Transonic shock wave/boundary layer interaction over a wall-mounted bump was investigated with specific focus on shock wave unsteadiness and identification of its source. A large separation bubble resulted of an interaction driven by a flow characterized by a peak Mach number of 1.365. Overall this particular type of transonic unsteadiness is characterized with low amplitude and relatively high frequency motion. Low frequency shock unsteadiness was optically estimated and matched spectral content of wall fluctuating pressure. A strong correlation between separation onset and reattachment zones suggested a model of bubble expansion/contraction at the reattachment point where upstream-traveling pressure waves are generated and cause the shock wave excursions

    An overview of aeroelasticity studies for the National Aerospace Plane

    The National Aero-Space Plane (NASP), or X-30, is a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle that is designed to takeoff and land on conventional runways. Research in aeroelasticity was conducted by NASA and the Wright Laboratory to support the design of a flight vehicle by the national contractor team. This research includes the development of new computational codes for predicting unsteady aerodynamic pressures. In addition, studies were conducted to determine the aerodynamic heating effects on vehicle aeroelasticity and to determine the effects of fuselage flexibility on the stability of the control systems. It also includes the testing of scale models to better understand the aeroelastic behavior of the X-30 and to obtain data for code validation and correlation. This paper presents an overview of the aeroelastic research which has been conducted to support the airframe design
