This dissertation presents in-depth investigation of turbo-coded CDNIA systems in packet data communication terminology. It is divided into three parts; (1) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in deterministic environment, (2) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in random access environment and (3) an implementation issue on turbo decoding. As a preliminary, the performance of CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ is investigated in deterministic environment. It highlights the practically achievable spectral efficiency of CDMA system with turbo codes and the effect of code rates on the performance of systems with MF and LMMSE receivers, respectively. For given ensemble distance spectra of punctured turbo codes, an improved union bound is used to evaluate the error probability of ML turbo decoder with MF receiver and with LMMSE receiver front-end and, then, the corresponding spectral efficiency is computed as a function of system load. In the second part, a generalized analytical framework is first provided to analyze hybrid type-11 ARQ in random access environment. When applying hybrid type-11 ARQ, probability of packet success and packet length is generally different from attempt to attempt. Since the conventional analytical model, customarily employed for ALOHA system with pure or hybrid type-I ARQ, cannot be applied for this case, an expanded analytical model is introduced. It can be regarded as a network of queues and Jackson and Burke\u27s theorems can be applied to simplify the analysis. The second part is further divided into two sub topics, i.e. CDMA slotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using packet combining and CDMA unslotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using code combining. For code combining, the rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes are examined. In the third part, noticing that the decoding delay is crucial to the fast ARQ, a parallel MAP algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational decoding delay of turbo codes. It utilizes the forward and backward variables computed in the previous iteration to provide boundary distributions for each sub-block MAP decoder. It has at least two advantages over the existing parallel scheme; No performance degradation and No additional computation

Performance analysis of unslotted fiber-optic code-division multiple-access (CDMA) packet networks

This paper examines code-division multiple-access (CDMA) techniques used in unslotted fiber-optic packet networks. Since the inherent properties and signal processing of the conventional communication channels are different from those of the fiber-optic channels, new code sequences must be constructed for fiber-optic applications. In unslotted systems, the exact solution is very difficult to obtain. Therefore, two approximation methods are presented to analyze the performance of such systems. Simulation is performed to verify the accuracy of the results.published_or_final_versio

This paper investigates the performance of frequency hopped packet radio networks which employ a memory at the receiver. The main feature of the memory is that all successive transmissions are utilized for packet reconstruction. Two schemes based on RS codes are investigated. System performance is analyzed in both slotted and unslotted channels. Fixed and adaptive packet lengths are considered. It is demonstrated that it is possible to achieve high throughput even in dense jamming environments

Coded Slotted ALOHA: A Graph-Based Method for Uncoordinated Multiple Access

In this paper, a random access scheme is introduced which relies on the combination of packet erasure correcting codes and successive interference cancellation (SIC). The scheme is named coded slotted ALOHA. A bipartite graph representation of the SIC process, resembling iterative decoding of generalized low-density parity-check codes over the erasure channel, is exploited to optimize the selection probabilities of the component erasure correcting codes via density evolution analysis. The capacity (in packets per slot) of the scheme is then analyzed in the context of the collision channel without feedback. Moreover, a capacity bound is developed and component code distributions tightly approaching the bound are derived.Comment: The final version to appear in IEEE Trans. Inf.

Analyzing Multi-Channel Medium Access Control Schemes With ALOHA Reservation

In order to improve the throughput performance of Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes in wireless communication networks, some researchers proposed to divide a single shared channel into several sub-channels: one as control subchannel and the others as data sub-channels. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate the maximum achievable throughput of a class of generic multi-channel MAC schemes that are based on the RTS/CTS (Ready-To-Send/Clear-To-Send) dialogue and on ALOHA contention resolution. We study these multichannel MAC schemes under two split-channel scenarios: the fixed-total-bandwidth scenario and the fixed-channel-bandwidth scenario. In the fixed-total-bandwidth scenario, we show that the throughput of the multi-channel MAC schemes is inferior to that of the corresponding single-channel MAC scheme, which sends the RTS/CTS packets and DATA packets on a single shared channel. For the fixed-channel-bandwidth scenario, where CDMA or similar techniques can be applied, we derive the optimal number of the data sub-channels that maximizes the throughput. The analytical framework that we derive in this paper can also be used to evaluate other contention resolution technique, when the average contention period is known

Assessing the security of digital radio networks in destructive impact conditions is an important task. However, such an assessment for random multiple access to the ALOHA-type environment in digital radio networks was not carried out. The paper presents an analytical model of random multiple access for the environment of digital radio networks of the ALOHA type in destructive impact conditions. In this model, acomplex measure, including the probability of a successful voice connection, the transfer of a service command, a text message or a multimedia file, the degree of filling and the degree of overflow of digital radio network data packets, serves as the resultant indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of random multiple media access. The new complex indicator of the probability of a successful voice connection, the transfer of a service command, a text message or a multimedia file takes into account the known probabilities of successful delivery of data packets, creation of a collision and a free channel, as well as new average transmission times for a sequence of data packets and a collision formed during such transmission. New indicators are the degree of filling and the degree of overflow of digital radio communications network data packets. They determine in saturated and supersaturated data networks of such a network how close (far) to maximum is the probability value of a successful voice connection, transmission of a service command, test message or multimedia file. The model takes into account the potential destructive effects of the attacker by refining the analytical expressions for the known probabilistic and new temporal characteristics. First, a quantitative relationship between the probability of a successful voice connection, the transfer of a service command, a text message or a multimedia file and the average duration of a data channel collisions is established./ Secondly, for guaranteed disabling a digital radio network with random multiple access to the medium ALOHA type attacker must constantly carry out a destructive impact. The results are applied in design of digital radio communications networks operating under destructive impacts, as well as in development of automatic systems for optimizing the operation of digital radio communications networks and protecting them from such impacts.Оценка защищенности сетей цифровой радиосвязи при деструктивных воздействиях злоумышленника является важной задачей.
