Solutions to Integrals Involving the Marcum Q-Function and Applications

Novel analytic solutions are derived for integrals that involve the generalized Marcum Q-function, exponential functions and arbitrary powers. Simple closed-form expressions are also derived for the specific cases of the generic integrals. The offered expressions are both convenient and versatile, which is particularly useful in applications relating to natural sciences and engineering, including wireless cpmmunications and signal processing. To this end, they are employed in the derivation of the channel capacity for fixed rate and channel inversion in the case of correlated multipath fading and switched diversity.Comment: 15 Pages, 2 Figure

    Towards Fully Optimized BICM Transceivers

    Get PDF
Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transceivers often use equally spaced constellations and a random interleaver. In this paper, we propose a new BICM design, which considers hierarchical (nonequally spaced) constellations, a bit-level multiplexer, and multiple interleavers. It is shown that this new scheme increases the degrees of freedom that can be exploited in order to improve its performance. Analytical bounds on the bit error rate (BER) of the system in terms of the constellation parameters and the multiplexing rules are developed for the additive white Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Nakagami-mm fading channels. These bounds are then used to design the BICM transceiver. Numerical results show that, compared to conventional BICM designs, and for a target BER of 10−610^{-6}, gains up to 3 dB in the AWGN channel are obtained. For fading channels, the gains depend on the fading parameter, and reach 2 dB for a target BER of 10−710^{-7} and m=5m=5.Comment: Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Communication

Energy Detection of Unknown Signals over Cascaded Fading Channels

Energy detection is a favorable mechanism in several applications relating to the identification of deterministic unknown signals such as in radar systems and cognitive radio communications. The present work quantifies the detrimental effects of cascaded multipath fading on energy detection and investigates the corresponding performance capability. A novel analytic solution is firstly derived for a generic integral that involves a product of the Meijer G−G-function, the Marcum Q−Q-function and arbitrary power terms. This solution is subsequently employed in the derivation of an exact closed-form expression for the average probability of detection of unknown signals over NN*Rayleigh channels. The offered results are also extended to the case of square-law selection, which is a relatively simple and effective diversity method. It is shown that the detection performance is considerably degraded by the number of cascaded channels and that these effects can be effectively mitigated by a non-substantial increase of diversity branches.Comment: 12 page

Joint Source-Channel Coding with Time-Varying Channel and Side-Information

Transmission of a Gaussian source over a time-varying Gaussian channel is studied in the presence of time-varying correlated side information at the receiver. A block fading model is considered for both the channel and the side information, whose states are assumed to be known only at the receiver. The optimality of separate source and channel coding in terms of average end-to-end distortion is shown when the channel is static while the side information state follows a discrete or a continuous and quasiconcave distribution. When both the channel and side information states are time-varying, separate source and channel coding is suboptimal in general. A partially informed encoder lower bound is studied by providing the channel state information to the encoder. Several achievable transmission schemes are proposed based on uncoded transmission, separate source and channel coding, joint decoding as well as hybrid digital-analog transmission. Uncoded transmission is shown to be optimal for a class of continuous and quasiconcave side information state distributions, while the channel gain may have an arbitrary distribution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example in which the uncoded transmission achieves the optimal performance thanks to the time-varying nature of the states, while it is suboptimal in the static version of the same problem. Then, the optimal \emph{distortion exponent}, that quantifies the exponential decay rate of the expected distortion in the high SNR regime, is characterized for Nakagami distributed channel and side information states, and it is shown to be achieved by hybrid digital-analog and joint decoding schemes in certain cases, illustrating the suboptimality of pure digital or analog transmission in general.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
