On the Heegaard Floer homology of Dehn surgery and unknotting number
n this thesis we generalise three theorems from the literature on Heegaard Floer
homology and Dehn surgery: one by Ozsv ́ath and Szab ́o on deficiency symmetries in
half-integral
L
-space surgeries, and two by Greene which use Donaldson’s diagonali-
sation theorem as an obstruction to integral and half-integral
L
-space surgeries. Our
generalisation is two-fold: first, we eliminate the
L
-space conditions, opening these
techniques up for use with much more general 3-manifolds, and second, we unify the
integral and half-integral surgery results into a broader theorem applicable to non-
zero rational surgeries in

which bound sharp, simply connected, negative-definite
smooth 4-manifolds. Such 3-manifolds are quite common and include, for example, a
huge number of Seifert fibred spaces.
Over the course of the first three chapters, we begin by introducing background
material on knots in 3-manifolds, the intersection form of a simply connected 4-
manifold, Spin- and Spin
c
-structures on 3- and 4-manifolds, and Heegaard Floer ho-
mology (including knot Floer homology). While none of the results in these chapters
are original, all of them are necessary to make sense of what follows. In Chapter 4,
we introduce and prove our main theorems, using arguments that are predominantly
algebraic or combinatorial in nature. We then apply these new theorems to the study
of unknotting number in Chapter 5, making considerable headway into the extremely
difficult problem of classifying the 3-strand pretzel knots with unknotting number
one. Finally, in Chapter 6, we present further applications of the main theorems,
ranging from a plan of attack on the famous Seifert fibred space realisation problem
to more biologically motivated problems concerning rational tangle replacement. An
appendix on the implications of our theorems for DNA topology is provided at the
end.Open Acces
Khovanov Homology, Lee Homology and a Rasmussen Invariant for Virtual Knots
The paper contains an essentially self-contained treatment of Khovanov
homology, Khovanov-Lee homology as well as the Rasmussen invariant for virtual
knots and virtual knot cobordisms which directly applies to classical knot and
classical knot cobordisms. To do so, we give an alternate formulation for the
Manturov definition of Khovanov homology for virtual knots and links with
arbitrary coefficients. This approach uses cut loci on the knot diagram to
induce a conjugation operator in the Frobenius algebra. We then discuss the
implications of the maps induced in the aforementioned theory to the universal
Frobenius algebra for virtual knots. Next we show how one can apply the Karoubi
envelope approach of Bar-Natan and Morrison on abstract link diagrams with
cross cuts to construct the canonical generators of the Khovanov-Lee homology.
Using these canonical generators we derive a generalization of the Rasmussen
invariant for virtual knot cobordisms and furthermore generalize Rasmussen's
result on the slice genus for positive knots to the case of positive virtual
knots. It should also be noted that this generalization of the Rasmussen
invariant provides an easy to compute obstruction to knot cobordisms in in the sense of Turaev
Classification of smooth embeddings of 4-manifolds in 7-space, I
We work in the smooth category. Let N be a closed connected n-manifold and
assume that m>n+2. Denote by E^m(N) the set of embeddings N -> R^m up to
isotopy. The group E^m(S^n) acts on E^m(N) by embedded connected sum of a
manifold and a sphere. If E^m(S^n) is non-zero (which often happens for
2m<3n+4) then no results on this action and no complete description of E^m(N)
were known. Our main results are examples of the triviality and the
effectiveness of this action, and a complete isotopy classification of
embeddings into R^7 for certain 4-manifolds N. The proofs are based on the
Kreck modification of surgery theory and on construction of a new embedding
invariant.
Corollary. (a) There is a unique embedding CP^2 -> R^7 up to isoposition.
(b) For each embedding f : CP^2 -> R^7 and each non-trivial knot g : S^4 ->
R^7 the embedding f#g is isotopic to f.Comment: 22 pages, no figures, statement and proof of the Effectiveness

The functoriality of Khovanov Homology and the monodromy of knots
prima volta da Jacobsson nel suo articolo “An invariant of link cobordisms from Khovanov
homology
”).
for tangles and cobordisms”,
nodo, link, tangle, diagramma e invariante.
nodi, nel senso di Jacobsson (si veda “An invariant of link cobordisms from Khovanov homology
”).
