Usability analysis of the user interface of movie-related websites in terms of universal design

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is the usability analysis of the user interface of movie-related websites in terms of universal design. The analysis was performed in order to verify the influence of fulfilling the universal design concepts on services usability. The studies were based on two interfaces: Filmweb and the one designed by the authors. For the purpose of analysis the following research methods were used: questionnaires, eye-tracker and validator tests. Moreover, there was compliance with World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards checked. Ten participants aged 23-25 took part in the study. Results analysis have shown that fulfilling universal design conceptions significantly increases usability of the interface

Student Internalizing Behavior Screener and Student Externalizing Behavior Screener: An Analysis of Reliability, Validity, and Usability in Elementary School Populations

Universal screening for emotional and behavioral risk in schools facilitates early identification and intervention for students as part of multitiered systems of support. Because early intervention has the potential to mitigate adverse outcomes of emotional and behavioral disorders and schools are prime locations to reach at-risk youth, research on the technical adequacy and usability of universal screeners to identify students for available school-based supports is vital. The purpose of this study was to extend existing research by Cook et al. (2011) and Cook, Volpe, and Gresham (2012) on the technical adequacy and usability of two universal screening measures, the Student Internalizing Behavior Screener (SIBS) and the Student Externalizing Behavior Screener (SEBS). Findings provided evidence for the reliability, concurrent validity, short-term predictive validity, and usability of the SIBS and SEBS in a sample of elementary-school students and their teachers. As a secondary focus, the technical adequacy and usability of the SIBS and SEBS was compared to that of two well-researched universal behavior screening measures. Results indicated that, in general, the SIBS and SEBS as a combined measure performed similarly to the criterion screening measures

Usability analysis of advertising websites interfaces with the use of the universal design principles

The aim of the research was to observe how the usage of the universal design principles influences on the accessibility and usability of websites. As one of the analysis’ subjects there was chosen the popular advertising website. It has been confronted with a newly implemented application offering the same functions, but improved with the requirements resulting from the universal design. In order to compare those two services there was conducted the study with the use of eye-tracking, LUT checklists and WAVE Evaluation Tool. These methods made it possible to demonstrate the differences between websites caused by the contrasting implementation methods. The results showed that an application of universal design principles has a positive impact on the websites’ accessibility and usability

Internet-delivered mental health treatment systems in Scandinavia – A usability evaluation

    Get PDF
Mental health problems are a major public health concern worldwide. Approximately 50% of the population will experience mental problems during their life. Traditional treatment is based on psychopharmacotherapy or psychotherapy, with face-to-face interaction between the patient and the therapist. New technologies such as Internet-delivered treatments are seen as an opportunity to offer more scalable and cost-efficient treatments in the field of mental health. Despite the growing interest and new evidence supporting the effect of Internet-delivered treatments is it remarkably little research on how the technology and the usability of Internet-delivered treatment programs affects the treatment. In this paper, we propose a set of evaluation criteria for evaluating the usability and the responsive design of Internet-delivered treatment systems. By our knowledge we are the first to include usability and universal design principles in the evaluation of Internet-delivered treatment systems. Our findings indicate that despite the good treatment results and proven clinical effects, the systems in general have several issues regarding usability, universal design and outdated technology. Based on our findings we propose that there should be established guidelines for testing the usability and technology of Internet-delivered treatment systems.publishedVersio

An Appraisal of Universal Design Compliance of Museum Buildings in Southwest Nigeria

    Get PDF
In recent years, museums in Nigeria have struggled to maintain economic viability and social relevance due to low patronage by visitors. Consequently, there is a growing need to explore how to achieve visitor-centered approach in the design, planning, and construction of museum buildings and facilities in this country. In the light of this, this study examined the extent to which the design, planning, and construction of museum buildings and facilities in Nigeria comply with the principles of universal design and promote users’ satisfaction. A case study research design was adopted in appraising three museums in southwest Nigeria, based on three universal design principles of approachability, accessibility, and usability. The findings reveal that the three museums complied reasonably well when it comes to approachability but performed below average in accessibility and usability parameters. As a result, the existing museums and their facilities and services are not very accessible, and usable by all categories of persons in the society. This implies that for museums buildings and facilities in this country to effectively serve all segments of the society and achieve enduser satisfaction, there is a need for the adoption of universal design principles, particularly as they relate to accessibility and usability requirements while retrofitting the existing ones

    Just design

Inclusive design prescribes addressing the needs of the widest possible audience in order to consider human differences. Taking differences seriously, however, may imply severely restricting “the widest possible audience”. In confronting this paradox, we investigate to what extent Rawls’ theory of justice as fairness applies to design. By converting the paradox into the question of how design can be fair, we show that the demand for equitability shifts from the design output to the design process. We conclude that the two main questions about justice find application in design: the question about the standards of justice and the question about its metrics. We endorse a Rawlsian approach to the former, while some revision may be due regarding the latter

The elderly and the digital inclusion: A brief reference to the initiatives of the European union and Portugal

    Get PDF
Background: The world and Europe, in particular, are aging very fast, and in the same vein, digitization is moving very quickly into citizens’ routines. Given the fact that the elderly are the largest group of citizens who are info-excluded, this reality is worrying because it will quickly make them socially excluded. This article briefly presents the main initiatives of the European Union and Portugal to promote greater and faster digital inclusion of the elderly people. In the final section, there is a critical reflection on technology acceptance Model, the concept of universal design and usability in order to propose clues and strategies that can and/or may facilitate the use and access of technologies and digital resources by the elderly.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
