    Robust bounded control for uncertain nonlinear systems: application to a nonlinear strict feedback wind turbine model with explicit wind speed dynamics.

    In this paper, a robust bounded control law for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems is proposed. The proposed bounded controller guarantees asymptotic stability, asymptotic tracking and asymptotic disturbance rejection of systems in strict feedback form with the sum of unmatched uncertainties and the unbounded exogenous disturbance. A feedback law emerged from Artstein's Theorem and Sontag's universal formulas are known to be useful to limit the control signal. However, the formulas are not robust as in many cases, being applied to the systems without uncertainties and disturbances. The controller proposed in this paper takes advantages of a mixed backstepping and Lyapunov redesign, which employed to enrich the Sontag's universal formulas. Therefore, the appealing feature of the proposed controller is that it satisfies small control property in order to preserve performance robustness and stability robustness with less control effort. Another advantage of the proposed controller is the formulas become applicable to higher order systems (i.e. order > 0). This paper also discusses fuzzy logic tuning approach for the controller parameters such that the closed loop system matrix remain Hurtwitz. For practicality, the proposed technique is applied to a variable speed control of a new strict feedback wind turbine system with wind dynamics appeared explicitly in the system model. The proposed controller guarantees the asymptotic tracking of the turbine rotor speed; maintains the optimal tip speed ratio and produces maximum power coefficient. This yields maximum power output from the turbine

    This paper presents a tutorial-style review on the recent results about the disturbance observer (DOB) in view of robust stabilization and recovery of the nominal performance. The analysis is based on the case when the bandwidth of Q-filter is large, and it is explained in a pedagogical manner that, even in the presence of plant uncertainties and disturbances, the behavior of real uncertain plant can be made almost similar to that of disturbance-free nominal system both in the transient and in the steady-state. The conventional DOB is interpreted in a new perspective, and its restrictions and extensions are discussed

    Fundamental Limitations of Disturbance Attenuation in the Presence of Side Information

    In this paper, we study fundamental limitations of disturbance attenuation of feedback systems, under the assumption that the controller has a finite horizon preview of the disturbance. In contrast with prior work, we extend Bode's integral equation for the case where the preview is made available to the controller via a general, finite capacity, communication system. Under asymptotic stationarity assumptions, our results show that the new fundamental limitation differs from Bode's only by a constant, which quantifies the information rate through the communication system. In the absence of asymptotic stationarity, we derive a universal lower bound which uses Shannon's entropy rate as a measure of performance. By means of a case-study, we show that our main bounds may be achieved

    Performance-based control system design automation via evolutionary computing

    This paper develops an evolutionary algorithm (EA) based methodology for computer-aided control system design (CACSD) automation in both the time and frequency domains under performance satisfactions. The approach is automated by efficient evolution from plant step response data, bypassing the system identification or linearization stage as required by conventional designs. Intelligently guided by the evolutionary optimization, control engineers are able to obtain a near-optimal ‘‘off-thecomputer’’ controller by feeding the developed CACSD system with plant I/O data and customer specifications without the need of a differentiable performance index. A speedup of near-linear pipelineability is also observed for the EA parallelism implemented on a network of transputers of Parsytec SuperCluster. Validation results against linear and nonlinear physical plants are convincing, with good closed-loop performance and robustness in the presence of practical constraints and perturbations

    Optimal control design for robust fuzzy friction compensation in a robot joint

    This paper presents a methodology for the compensation of nonlinear friction in a robot joint structure based on a fuzzy local modeling technique. To enhance the tracking performance of the robot joint, a dynamic model is derived from the local physical properties of friction. The model is the basis of a precompensator taking into account the dynamics of the overall corrected system by means of a minor loop. The proposed structure does not claim to faithfully reproduce complex phenomena driven by friction. However, the linearity of the local models simplifies the design and implementation of the observer, and its estimation capabilities are improved by the nonlinear integral gain. The controller can then be robustly synthesized using linear matrix inequalities to cancel the effects of inexact friction compensation. Experimental tests conducted on a robot joint with a high level of friction demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy observer-based control strategy for tracking system trajectories when operating in zero-velocity regions and during motion reversals

    Embedded Model Control calls for disturbance modeling and rejection

    Robust control design is mainly devoted to guaranteeing the closed-loop stability of a model-based control law in the presence of parametric uncertainties. The control law is usually a static feedback law which is derived from a (nonlinear) model using different methodologies. From this standpoint, stability can only be guaranteed by introducing some ignorance coefficients and restricting the feedback control effort with respect to the model-based design. Embedded Model Control shows that, the model-based control law must and can be kept intact in the case of uncertainty, if, under certain conditions, the controllable dynamics is complemented by suitable disturbance dynamics capable of real-time encoding the different uncertainties affecting the ‘embedded model', i.e. the model which is both the design source and the core of the control unit. To be real-time updated the disturbance state is driven by an unpredictable input vector, the noise, which can only be estimated from the model error. The uncertainty-based (or plant-based) design concerns the noise estimator, so as to prevent the model error from conveying uncertainty components (parametric, cross-coupling, neglected dynamics) which are command-dependent and thus prone to destabilizing the controlled plant, into the embedded model. Separation of the components in the low and high frequency domain by the noise estimator itself allows stability recovery and guarantee, and the rejection of low frequency uncertainty components. Two simple case studies endowed with simulated and experimental runs will help to understand the key assets of the methodolog

    The application of a new PID autotuning method for the steam/water loop in large scale ships

    In large scale ships, the most used controllers for the steam/water loop are still the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. However, the tuning rules for the PID parameters are based on empirical knowledge and the performance for the loops is not satisfying. In order to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop, the application of a recently developed PID autotuning method is studied. Firstly, a 'forbidden region' on the Nyquist plane can be obtained based on user-defined performance requirements such as robustness or gain margin and phase margin. Secondly, the dynamic of the system can be obtained with a sine test around the operation point. Finally, the PID controller's parameters can be obtained by locating the frequency response of the controlled system at the edge of the 'forbidden region'. To verify the effectiveness of the new PID autotuning method, comparisons are presented with other PID autotuning methods, as well as the model predictive control. The results show the superiority of the new PID autotuning method

    Universal direct tuner for loop control in industry

    This paper introduces a direct universal (automatic) tuner for basic loop control in industrial applications. The direct feature refers to the fact that a first-hand model, such as a step response first-order plus dead time approximation, is not required. Instead, a point in the frequency domain and the corresponding slope of the loop frequency response is identified by single test suitable for industrial applications. The proposed method has been shown to overcome pitfalls found in other (automatic) tuning methods and has been validated in a wide range of common and exotic processes in simulation and experimental conditions. The method is very robust to noise, an important feature for real life industrial applications. Comparison is performed with other well-known methods, such as approximate M-constrained integral gain optimization (AMIGO) and Skogestad internal model controller (SIMC), which are indirect methods, i.e., they are based on a first-hand approximation of step response data. The results indicate great similarity between the results, whereas the direct method has the advantage of skipping this intermediate step of identification. The control structure is the most commonly used in industry, i.e., proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type. As the derivative action is often not used in industry due to its difficult choice, in the proposed method, we use a direct relation between the integral and derivative gains. This enables the user to have in the tuning structure the advantages of the derivative action, therefore much improving the potential of good performance in real life control applications

    On the centrality of disturbance rejection in automatic control

    In this paper, it is shown that the problem of automatic control is, in essence, that of disturbance rejection, with the notion of disturbance generalized to symbolize the uncertainties, both internal and external to the plant. A novel, unifying concept of disturbance rejector is proposed to compliment the traditional notion of controller. The new controller-rejector pair is shown to be a powerful organizing principle in the realm of automatic control, leading to a Copernican moment where the model-centric design philosophy is replaced by the one that is control-centric in the following sense: the controller is designed for a canonical model and is fixed; the difference between the plant and the canonical model is deemed as disturbance and rejected
