    In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments of functional quantization of stochastic processes, with an emphasis on the quadratic case. Functional quantization is a way to approximate a process, viewed as a Hilbert-valued random variable, using a nearest neighbour projection on a finite codebook. A special emphasis is made on the computational aspects and the numerical applications, in particular the pricing of some path-dependent European options.Comment: 41 page

    On the Number of Bins in Equilibria for Signaling Games

    We investigate the equilibrium behavior for the decentralized quadratic cheap talk problem in which an encoder and a decoder, viewed as two decision makers, have misaligned objective functions. In prior work, we have shown that the number of bins under any equilibrium has to be at most countable, generalizing a classical result due to Crawford and Sobel who considered sources with density supported on [0,1][0,1]. In this paper, we refine this result in the context of exponential and Gaussian sources. For exponential sources, a relation between the upper bound on the number of bins and the misalignment in the objective functions is derived, the equilibrium costs are compared, and it is shown that there also exist equilibria with infinitely many bins under certain parametric assumptions.     Algorithms for Optimal Control with Fixed-Rate Feedback

    We consider a discrete-time linear quadratic Gaussian networked control setting where the (full information) observer and controller are separated by a fixed-rate noiseless channel. The minimal rate required to stabilize such a system has been well studied. However, for a given fixed rate, how to quantize the states so as to optimize performance is an open question of great theoretical and practical significance. We concentrate on minimizing the control cost for first-order scalar systems. To that end, we use the Lloyd-Max algorithm and leverage properties of logarithmically-concave functions and sequential Bayesian filtering to construct the optimal quantizer that greedily minimizes the cost at every time instant. By connecting the globally optimal scheme to the problem of scalar successive refinement, we argue that its gain over the proposed greedy algorithm is negligible. This is significant since the globally optimal scheme is often computationally intractable. All the results are proven for the more general case of disturbances with logarithmically-concave distributions and rate-limited time-varying noiseless channels. We further extend the framework to event-triggered control by allowing to convey information via an additional "silent symbol", i.e., by avoiding transmitting bits; by constraining the minimal probability of silence we attain a tradeoff between the transmission rate and the control cost for rates below one bit per sample

    Risk Quantization by Magnitude and Propensity

    We propose a novel approach in the assessment of a random risk variable X by introducing magnitude-propensity risk measures (mX; pX). This bivariate measure intends to account for the dual aspect of risk, where the magnitudes x of X tell how hign are the losses incurred, whereas the probabilities P(X = x) reveal how often one has to expect to suffer such losses. The basic idea is to simultaneously quantify both the severity mX and the propensity pX of the real-valued risk X. This is to be contrasted with traditional univariate risk measures, like VaR or Expected shortfall, which typically conflate both effects. In its simplest form, (mX; pX) is obtained by mass transportation in Wasserstein metric of the law PX of X to a two-points f0;mXg discrete distribution with mass pX at mX. The approach can also be formulated as a constrained optimal quantization problem. This allows for an informative comparison of risks on both the magnitude and propensity scales.
