    "No-Scalar-Hair" Theorems for Nonminimally Coupled Fields with Quartic Self-Interaction

    Self-gravitating scalar fields with nonminimal coupling to gravity and having a quartic self-interaction are considered in the domain of outer communications of a static black hole. It is shown that there is no value of the nonminimal coupling parameter ζ\zeta for which nontrivial static black hole solutions exist. This result establishes the correctness of Bekenstein ``no-scalar-hair'' conjecture for quartic self-interactions.Comment: 8 pages, RevTeX

    A Formal ORM-to -UML Mapping Algorithm

    The object-role model (ORM) data structure can be represented in the unified modeling language (UML) using the five fact encoding constructs: class attribute, association, association class, sub-class and the association qualifier. In the existing literature there exist numerous mappings of how individual fact types from an ORM information model can be mapped onto ‘well-formed’ UML expressions. What is lacking in the existing literature is a precise description of the conditions on the ‘source’ object-role model under which a specific UML fact encoding construct can be applied in the ‘target’ UML class diagram.     Graph Rewriting and Relabeling with PBPO+

    We extend the powerful Pullback-Pushout (PBPO) approach for graph rewriting with strong matching. Our approach, called \pbpostrong, exerts more control over the embedding of the pattern in the host graph, which is important for a large class of graph rewrite systems. In addition, we show that \pbpostrong is well-suited for rewriting labeled graphs and certain classes of attributed graphs. For this purpose, we employ a lattice structure on the label set and use order-preserving graph morphisms.     A Framework for Resource Dependent EDSLs in a Dependently Typed Language (Pearl)

    Idris' Effects library demonstrates how to embed resource dependent algebraic effect handlers into a dependently typed host language, providing run-time and compile-time based reasoning on type-level resources. Building upon this work, Resources is a framework for realising Embedded Domain Specific Languages (EDSLs) with type systems that contain domain specific substructural properties. Differing from Effects, Resources allows a language’s substructural properties to be encoded within type-level resources that are associated with language variables. Such an association allows for multiple effect instances to be reasoned about autonomically and without explicit type-level declaration. Type-level predicates are used as proof that the language’s substructural properties hold. Several exemplar EDSLs are presented that illustrates our framework’s operation and how dependent types provide correctness-by-construction guarantees that substructural properties of written programs hold

    Automated IDEF3 and IDEF4 systems design specification document

    The current design is presented for the automated IDEF3 and IDEF4 tools. The philosophy is described behind the tool designs as well as the conceptual view of the interacting components of the two tools. Finally, a detailed description is presented of the existing designs for the tools using IDEF3 process descriptions and IDEF4 diagrams. In the preparation of these designs, the IDEF3 and IDEF4 methodologies were very effective in defining the structure and operation of the tools. The experience in designing systems in this fashion was very valuable and resulted in future systems being designed in this way. However, the number of IDEF3 and IDEF4 diagrams that were produced using a Macintosh for this document attest to the need for an automated tool to simplify this design process

    Evidence-based design: theoretical and practical reflections of an emerging approach in office architecture

    Evidence-based design is a practice that has emerged only relatively recently, inspired by a growing popularity of evidence-based approaches in other professions such as medicine. It has received greatest attention in design for the health sector, but has received less in office architecture, although this would seem not only to be beneficial for clients, but increasingly important in a changing business environment. This paper outlines the history and origins of evidence-based practice, its influence in the health sector, as well as some of the reasons why it has been found more difficult to apply in office architecture. Based on these theoretical reflections, data and experiences from several research case studies in diverse workplace environments are presented following a three part argument: firstly we show how organisational behaviours may change as a result of an organisation moving into a new building; secondly we argue that not all effects of space on organisations are consistent. Examples of both consistent and inconsistent results are presented, giving possible reasons for differences in outcomes. Thirdly, practical implications of evidence-based design are made and difficulties for evidence-based practice, for example the problem of investment of time, are reflected on. The paper concludes that organisations may be distinguished according to both their spatial and transpatial structure (referring to a concept initially introduced by Hillier and Hanson in their study of societies). This means that evidence-based design in office architecture needs to recognise that it deals with a multiplicity of possible organisational forms, with specific clients requiring case-dependent research and evidence gathering. In this evidence-based design practice differs markedly from evidence-based medicine. Finally, we suggest a framework for systematic review inclusion criteria in the development of Evidence-Based Design as a field of practice. We argue that it is only through the development of an approach tailored to the specific nature of design practice and organisational function that research evidence can properly be brought to bear
