Unions of Onions: Preprocessing Imprecise Points for Fast Onion Decomposition

Let D\mathcal{D} be a set of nn pairwise disjoint unit disks in the plane. We describe how to build a data structure for D\mathcal{D} so that for any point set PP containing exactly one point from each disk, we can quickly find the onion decomposition (convex layers) of PP. Our data structure can be built in O(nlogn)O(n \log n) time and has linear size. Given PP, we can find its onion decomposition in O(nlogk)O(n \log k) time, where kk is the number of layers. We also provide a matching lower bound. Our solution is based on a recursive space decomposition, combined with a fast algorithm to compute the union of two disjoint onionComment: 10 pages, 5 figures; a preliminary version appeared at WADS 201

    Barriers to Union Organizing

[Excerpt] The current environment presents dramatic challenges for the American labor movement. Structural change in the economy has meant job loss in traditionally unionized sectors such as heavy manufacturing, and job gains in the less unionized service industries. Deregulation and increased international trade have created competitive pressures on unionized industries, resulting in significant concessions and a reduction in bargaining power. Simultaneously, unions have contended for twelve years with unfriendly government regulators who have displayed little commitment to timely and vigorous enforcement of protective labor legislation. In particular, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) of the Reagan and Bush administrations has reinterpreted the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), weakening protections for union activity and relaxing restrictions on management practices. The combinations of competitive pressures and a more congenial legal setting has fostered more vigorous management opposition to unions at the bargaining table, during organizing campaigns, and in the courts

    Privatization Bites

[Excerpt]Many have perceived privatization as a local phenomenon, but in fact it is not local. It is an international granite column upon which the so-called New World Order stands. Within weeks after the election of Ronald Reagan to the U.S. presidency, two right-wing think tanks, the Heritage Foundation in this country and England\u27s Adam Smith Foundation, produced a thousand-page document showing that the worldwide economic strategy of both the United States government and the British government would be a privatization strategy. Powerful international financial institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, have made public sector reform the center-piece of their dogmatic four-pronged program of privatization, deregulation, free trade, and currency devaluation

The Automatic Onion Cutter Using Arduino Uno as Control System Tool

    Get PDF
Today's technological developments are growing rapidly, but there are still jobs that are done manually and semi-manually. This paper aims to develop a control system to coordinate the work of tools using an electric motor, which is very helpful in the process of cutting onions in large quantities and is more efficient in spending production costs because the tool designed is an automatic onion cutter. This research method begins with the collection of materials and data related to onion cutters, production of onion cutters, and testing of onion cutters. The measurement results of the tool show that every component in the automatic onion cutter works well and optimally; the measurement process is carried out properly and thoroughly. This optimal work result is supported by Arduino Uno. The Arduino Uno microcontroller acts as a tool controller. In the main system, the onion cutter is controlled by the Arduino Uno with the Arduino programming language. This automatic onion cutting system will work when the onion you want to cut has been inserted into a cross-section that has been equipped with an ultrasonic sensor, and then the onion cutting process is carried out. Compared with the manual method, the cutting time is almost the same. It's just that the advantages of slicing with this tool, the resulting slices are relatively more uniform. Besides that, another advantage is that it doesn't hurt the eyes of the onion slicer. So that this tool can be used by small entrepreneurs and onion farmers to increase productivity and the community's economy

Training Needs Assessment of Farm Workers in Orange and Sullivan Counties, NY

[Excerpt] A team of three faculty members from Cornell interviewed people from agencies or organizations that provide services to or work with farm workers in and near Orange and Sullivan Counties NY. We also met many times with the staff of the Centro Independiente de Trabajadores Agricolas (CITA, Independent Farm Workers Center located in Florida, NY) and groups of farm workers. Most of the farm workers with whom we met work in the onion fields in the black dirt area of Orange County or on a large duck farm in Sullivan County. At the same time, we did a review of literature and basic analysis of census data and other government statistics, as well as consultation with industry expert and researchers

In Search of a Euro Effect: Big Lessons from a Big Mac Meal?

We investigate whether the adoption of the euro was accompanied by an increase in prices in member countries, and whether it promoted goods market arbitrage in the form of faster convergence to a common price. By comparing the experience of eurozone countries to non-euro European countries in a ‘difference-in-differences’ specification we net out effects on prices unrelated to the euro. We conclude that (a) there is no evidence of significant price increases associated with the adoption of the euro even for food items; and (b) there is little systematic evidence of a significant improvement in goods market integration following the euro’s introduction.
