The most controversial topics in Wikipedia: A multilingual and geographical analysis
We present, visualize and analyse the similarities and differences between
the controversial topics related to "edit wars" identified in 10 different
language versions of Wikipedia. After a brief review of the related work we
describe the methods developed to locate, measure, and categorize the
controversial topics in the different languages. Visualizations of the degree
of overlap between the top 100 lists of most controversial articles in
different languages and the content related to geographical locations will be
presented. We discuss what the presented analysis and visualizations can tell
us about the multicultural aspects of Wikipedia and practices of
peer-production. Our results indicate that Wikipedia is more than just an
encyclopaedia; it is also a window into convergent and divergent social-spatial
priorities, interests and preferences.Comment: This is a draft of a book chapter to be published in 2014 by

Complex Beauty
Complex systems and their underlying convoluted networks are ubiquitous, all
we need is an eye for them. They pose problems of organized complexity which
cannot be approached with a reductionist method. Complexity science and its
emergent sister network science both come to grips with the inherent complexity
of complex systems with an holistic strategy. The relevance of complexity,
however, transcends the sciences. Complex systems and networks are the focal
point of a philosophical, cultural and artistic turn of our tightly
interrelated and interdependent postmodern society. Here I take a different,
aesthetic perspective on complexity. I argue that complex systems can be
beautiful and can the object of artification - the neologism refers to
processes in which something that is not regarded as art in the traditional
sense of the word is changed into art. Complex systems and networks are
powerful sources of inspiration for the generative designer, for the artful
data visualizer, as well as for the traditional artist. I finally discuss the
benefits of a cross-fertilization between science and art
Regional Languages on Wikipedia. Venetian Wikipedia’s user interaction over time
Given that little is known about regional language user interaction practices on Wikipedia, this study analyzed content creation process, user social interaction and exchanged content over the course of the existence of Venetian Wikipedia. Content of and user interactions over time on Venetian Wikipedia exhibit practices shared within larger Wikipedia communities and display behaviors that are pertinent to this specific community. Shared practices with\ud
other Wikipedias (eg. English Wikipedia) included coordination content as a dominant category of exchanged content, user-role based structure where and most active communicators are administrators was another shared feature, as well as socialization tactics to involve users in online projects. While Venetian Wikipedia stood out for its geographically-linked users who emphasized their regional identity. User exchanges over time spilled over from online to offline domains. This analysis provides a different side of Wikipedia collaboration which is based on creation, maintenance, and negotiation of the content but also shows\ud
engagement into interpersonal communication. Thus, this study exemplifies how regional language Wikipedias provide ways to their users not only to preserve their cultural heritage through the language use on regional language Wikipedia space and connect through shared contents of interest, but also, how it could serve as a community maintenance platform that unifies users with shared goals and extends communication to offline realm
