Narrowing strategies for arbitrary canonical rewrite systems
Narrowing is a universal unification procedure for equational theories defined by a canonical term rewriting system. In its original form it is extremely inefficient. Therefore, many optimizations have been proposed during the last years. In this paper, we present the narrowing strategies for arbitrary canonical systems in a uniform framework and introduce the new narrowing strategy LSE narrowing. LSE narrowing is complete and improves all other strategies which are complete for arbitrary canonical systems. It is optimal in the sense that two different LSE narrowing derivations cannot generate the same narrowing substitution. Moreover, LSE narrowing computes only normalized narrowing substitutions
Strategy Logic with Imperfect Information
We introduce an extension of Strategy Logic for the imperfect-information
setting, called SLii, and study its model-checking problem. As this logic
naturally captures multi-player games with imperfect information, the problem
turns out to be undecidable. We introduce a syntactical class of "hierarchical
instances" for which, intuitively, as one goes down the syntactic tree of the
formula, strategy quantifications are concerned with finer observations of the
model. We prove that model-checking SLii restricted to hierarchical instances
is decidable. This result, because it allows for complex patterns of
existential and universal quantification on strategies, greatly generalises
previous ones, such as decidability of multi-player games with imperfect
information and hierarchical observations, and decidability of distributed
synthesis for hierarchical systems. To establish the decidability result, we
introduce and study QCTL*ii, an extension of QCTL* (itself an extension of CTL*
with second-order quantification over atomic propositions) by parameterising
its quantifiers with observations. The simple syntax of QCTL* ii allows us to
provide a conceptually neat reduction of SLii to QCTL*ii that separates
concerns, allowing one to forget about strategies and players and focus solely
on second-order quantification. While the model-checking problem of QCTL*ii is,
in general, undecidable, we identify a syntactic fragment of hierarchical
formulas and prove, using an automata-theoretic approach, that it is decidable.

Online games: a novel approach to explore how partial information influences human random searches
Many natural processes rely on optimizing the success ratio of a search
process. We use an experimental setup consisting of a simple online game in
which players have to find a target hidden on a board, to investigate the how
the rounds are influenced by the detection of cues. We focus on the search
duration and the statistics of the trajectories traced on the board. The
experimental data are explained by a family of random-walk-based models and
probabilistic analytical approximations. If no initial information is given to
the players, the search is optimized for cues that cover an intermediate
spatial scale. In addition, initial information about the extension of the cues
results, in general, in faster searches. Finally, strategies used by informed
players turn into non-stationary processes in which the length of each
displacement evolves to show a well-defined characteristic scale that is not

Experiments with a Convex Polyhedral Analysis Tool for Logic Programs
Convex polyhedral abstractions of logic programs have been found very useful
in deriving numeric relationships between program arguments in order to prove
program properties and in other areas such as termination and complexity
analysis. We present a tool for constructing polyhedral analyses of
(constraint) logic programs. The aim of the tool is to make available, with a
convenient interface, state-of-the-art techniques for polyhedral analysis such
as delayed widening, narrowing, "widening up-to", and enhanced automatic
selection of widening points. The tool is accessible on the web, permits user
programs to be uploaded and analysed, and is integrated with related program
transformations such as size abstractions and query-answer transformation. We
then report some experiments using the tool, showing how it can be conveniently
used to analyse transition systems arising from models of embedded systems, and
an emulator for a PIC microcontroller which is used for example in wearable
computing systems. We discuss issues including scalability, tradeoffs of
precision and computation time, and other program transformations that can
