    Service differentiation in OFDM-Based IEEE 802.16 networks

    IEEE 802.16 network is widely viewed as a strong candidate solution for broadband wireless access systems. Various flexible mechanisms related to QoS provisioning have been specified for uplink traffic at the medium access control (MAC) layer in the standards. Among the mechanisms, bandwidth request scheme can be used to indicate and request bandwidth demands to the base station for different services. Due to the diverse QoS requirements of the applications, service differentiation (SD) is desirable for the bandwidth request scheme. In this paper, we propose several SD approaches. The approaches are based on the contention-based bandwidth request scheme and achieved by the means of assigning different channel access parameters and/or bandwidth allocation priorities to different services. Additionally, we propose effective analytical model to study the impacts of the SD approaches, which can be used for the configuration and optimization of the SD services. It is observed from simulations that the analytical model has high accuracy. Service can be efficiently differentiated with initial backoff window in terms of throughput and channel access delay. Moreover, the service differentiation can be improved if combined with the bandwidth allocation priority approach without adverse impacts on the overall system throughput

    We investigate strategies to improve the performance of transmission schedules for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) employing adaptive direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) modulation. Previously, scheduling protocols for MANETs have been designed under the assumption of an idealized, narrowband wireless channel. These protocols perform poorly when the channel model incorporates distance-based path loss and co-channel interference. Wideband communication systems, such as DSSS systems, are more robust in the presence of co-channel interference; however, DSSS also provides multiple-access capability that cannot be properly leveraged with a protocol designed for narrowband systems. We present a new transmission scheduling protocol that incorporates link characteristics, spreading factor adaptation, and packet capture capability into scheduling and routing decisions. This provides greater spatial reuse of the channel and better adaptability in mobile environments. Simulation results demonstrate the merits of this approach in terms of end-to-end packet throughput, delay, and completion rate for unicast traffic. We also discuss two variations of the protocol: one provides a method for enhancing the network topology through exchange of local information, and the other leverages multi-packet reception (MPR) capability to enhance the network topology. We show that each approach is useful in networks with sparse connectivity. We conclude by studying the capacity of the networks used in previous sections, providing insight on methods for realizing further performance gains

    CR technology, which is the next-generation wireless communication system, improves the utilization of the overall radio spectrum through dynamic adaptation to local spectrum availability. In CR networks, unlicensed or Secondary Users (SUs) may operate in underutilized spectrum (called white spaces) owned by the licensed or Primary Users (PUs) conditional upon PUs encountering acceptably low interference levels. Ideally, the PUs are oblivious to the presence of the SUs. Context awareness enables an SU to sense and observe its operating environment, which is complex and dynamic in nature; while intelligence enables the SU to learn knowledge, which can be acquired through observing the consequences of its prior action, about its operating environment so that it carries out the appropriate action to achieve optimum network performance in an efficient manner without following a strict and static predefined set of policies. Traditionally, without the application of intelligence, each wireless host adheres to a strict and static predefined set of policies, which may not be optimum in many kinds of operating environment. With the application of intelligence, the knowledge changes in line with the dynamic operating environment. This thesis investigates the application of an artificial intelligence approach called reinforcement learning to achieve context awareness and intelligence in order to enable the SUs to sense and utilize the high quality white spaces. To date, the research focus of the CR research community has been primarily on the physical layer of the open system interconnection model. The research into the data link layer is still in its infancy, and our research work focusing on this layer has been pioneering in this field and has attacted considerable international interest. There are four major outcomes in this thesis. Firstly, various types of multi-channel medium access control protocols are reviewed, followed by discussion of their merits and demerits. The purpose is to show the additional functionalities and challenges that each multi-channel medium access control protocol has to offer and address in order to operate in CR networks. Secondly, a novel cross-layer based quality of service architecture called C2net for CR networks is proposed to provide service prioritization and tackle the issues associated with CR networks. Thirdly, reinforcement learning is applied to pursue context awareness and intelligence in both centralized and distributed CR networks. Analysis and simulation results show that reinforcement learning is a promising mechanism to achieve context awareness and intelligence. Fourthly, the versatile reinforcement learning approach is applied in various schemes for performance enhancement in CR networks

    La integración de las tecnologías de las telecomunicaciones en el sector del automóvil permitirá a los vehículos intercambiar información mediante Redes Vehiculares, ofreciendo numerosas posibilidades. Esta tesis se centra en la mejora de la seguridad vial y la reducción de la siniestralidad mediante Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS). El primer paso consiste en obtener una difusión eficiente de los mensajes de advertencia sobre situaciones potencialmente peligrosas. Hemos desarrollado un marco para simular el intercambio de mensajes entre vehículos, utilizado para proponer esquemas eficientes de difusión. También demostramos que la disposición de las calles tiene gran influencia sobre la eficiencia del proceso. Nuestros algoritmos de difusión son parte de una arquitectura más amplia (e-NOTIFY) capaz de detectar accidentes de tráfico e informar a los servicios de emergencia. El desarrollo y evaluación de un prototipo demostró la viabilidad del sistema y cómo podría ayudar a reducir el número de víctimas en carretera
