How to Understand LMMSE Transceiver Design for MIMO Systems From Quadratic Matrix Programming
In this paper, a unified linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) transceiver
design framework is investigated, which is suitable for a wide range of
wireless systems. The unified design is based on an elegant and powerful
mathematical programming technology termed as quadratic matrix programming
(QMP). Based on QMP it can be observed that for different wireless systems,
there are certain common characteristics which can be exploited to design LMMSE
transceivers e.g., the quadratic forms. It is also discovered that evolving
from a point-to-point MIMO system to various advanced wireless systems such as
multi-cell coordinated systems, multi-user MIMO systems, MIMO cognitive radio
systems, amplify-and-forward MIMO relaying systems and so on, the quadratic
nature is always kept and the LMMSE transceiver designs can always be carried
out via iteratively solving a number of QMP problems. A comprehensive framework
on how to solve QMP problems is also given. The work presented in this paper is
likely to be the first shoot for the transceiver design for the future
ever-changing wireless systems.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by IET Communication

Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
Joint source and relay optimization for two-way linear non-regenerative MIMO relay communications
In this paper, we investigate the challenging problem of joint source and relay optimization for two-way linear non-regenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication systems. We derive the optimal structure of the source and relay precoding matrices when linear minimal mean-squared error (MMSE) receivers are used at both destinations in the relay system. We show that for a broad class of frequently used objective functions for MIMO communications such as the MMSE, the maximal mutual information (MMI), and the minimax MSE, the optimal relay and source matrices have a general beamforming structure. This result includes existing works as special cases. Based on this optimal structure, a new iterative algorithm is developed to jointly optimize the relay and source matrices. We also propose a novel suboptimal relay precoding matrix design which significantly reduces the computational complexity of the optimal design with only a marginal performance degradation. Interestingly, we show that this suboptimal relay matrix is indeed optimal for some special cases. The performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by numerical simulations. It is shown that the novel minimax MSE-based two-way relay system has a better bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared with existing two-way relay systems using the MMSE and the MMI criteria
Linear Precoding Designs for Amplify-and-Forward Multiuser Two-Way Relay Systems
Two-way relaying can improve spectral efficiency in two-user cooperative
communications. It also has great potential in multiuser systems. A major
problem of designing a multiuser two-way relay system (MU-TWRS) is transceiver
or precoding design to suppress co-channel interference. This paper aims to
study linear precoding designs for a cellular MU-TWRS where a multi-antenna
base station (BS) conducts bi-directional communications with multiple mobile
stations (MSs) via a multi-antenna relay station (RS) with amplify-and-forward
relay strategy. The design goal is to optimize uplink performance, including
total mean-square error (Total-MSE) and sum rate, while maintaining individual
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement for downlink
signals. We show that the BS precoding design with the RS precoder fixed can be
converted to a standard second order cone programming (SOCP) and the optimal
solution is obtained efficiently. The RS precoding design with the BS precoder
fixed, on the other hand, is non-convex and we present an iterative algorithm
to find a local optimal solution. Then, the joint BS-RS precoding is obtained
by solving the BS precoding and the RS precoding alternately. Comprehensive
simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed
precoding designs.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted by IEEE TW
Matrix-Monotonic Optimization for MIMO Systems
For MIMO systems, due to the deployment of multiple antennas at both the
transmitter and the receiver, the design variables e.g., precoders, equalizers,
training sequences, etc. are usually matrices. It is well known that matrix
operations are usually more complicated compared to their vector counterparts.
In order to overcome the high complexity resulting from matrix variables, in
this paper we investigate a class of elegant multi-objective optimization
problems, namely matrix-monotonic optimization problems (MMOPs). In our work,
various representative MIMO optimization problems are unified into a framework
of matrix-monotonic optimization, which includes linear transceiver design,
nonlinear transceiver design, training sequence design, radar waveform
optimization, the corresponding robust design and so on as its special cases.
Then exploiting the framework of matrix-monotonic optimization the optimal
structures of the considered matrix variables can be derived first. Based on
the optimal structure, the matrix-variate optimization problems can be greatly
simplified into the ones with only vector variables. In particular, the
dimension of the new vector variable is equal to the minimum number of columns
and rows of the original matrix variable. Finally, we also extend our work to
some more general cases with multiple matrix variables.Comment: 37 Pages, 5 figures, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Final

A Tutorial on the Optimization of Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relay Systems
The remarkable promise of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels has motivated an intense research activity to characterize the theoretical and practical issues associated with the design of transmit (source) and receive (destination) processing matrices under different operating conditions. This activity was primarily focused on point-to-point (single-hop) communications but more recently there has been an extensive work on two-hop or multi-hop settings in which single or multiple relays are used to deliver the information from the source to the destination. The aim of this tutorial is to provide an up-to-date overview of the fundamental results and practical implementation issues of designing amplify-and-forward MIMO relay systems
