Residential Demand Side Management model, optimization and future perspective: A review

    Get PDF
The residential load sector plays a vital role in terms of its impact on overall power balance, stability, and efficient power management. However, the load dynamics of the energy demand of residential users are always nonlinear, uncontrollable, and inelastic concerning power grid regulation and management. The integration of distributed generations (DGs) and advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) even though handles the related issues and challenges up to some extent, till the flexibility, energy management and scheduling with better planning are necessary for the residential sector to achieve better grid stability and efficiency. To address these issues, it is indispensable to analyze the demand-side management (DSM) for the complex residential sector considering various operational constraints, objectives, identifying various factors that affect better planning, scheduling, and management, to project the key features of various approaches and possible future research directions. This review has been done based on the related literature to focus on modeling, optimization methods, major objectives, system operation constraints, dominating factors impacting overall system operation, and possible solutions enhancing residential DSM operation. Gaps in future research and possible prospects have been discussed briefly to give a proper insight into the current implementation of DSM. This extensive review of residential DSM will help all the researchers in this area to innovate better energy management strategies and reduce the effect of system uncertainties, variations, and constraints

Construction of Smart Grid Load Forecast Model by Edge Computing

    Get PDF
This research aims to minimize the unnecessary resource consumption by intelligent Power Grid Systems (PGSs). Edge Computing (EC) technology is used to forecast PGS load and optimize the PGS load forecasting model. Following a literature review of EC and Internet of Things (IoT)-native edge devices, an intelligent PGS-oriented Resource Management Scheme (RMS) and PGS load forecasting model are proposed based on task offloading. Simultaneously, an online delay-aware power Resource Allocation Algorithm (RAA) is developed for EC architecture. Finally, comparing three algorithms corroborate that the system overhead decreases significantly with the model iteration. From the 40th iteration, the system overhead stabilizes. Moreover, given no more than 50 users, the average user delay of the proposed delay-aware power RAA is less than 13 s. The average delay of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the other two algorithms. This research contributes to optimizing intelligent PGS in smart cities and improving power transmission efficiency

A Survey of the Security Challenges and Requirements for IoT Operating Systems

The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming an integral part of our modern lives as we converge towards a world surrounded by ubiquitous connectivity. The inherent complexity presented by the vast IoT ecosystem ends up in an insufficient understanding of individual system components and their interactions, leading to numerous security challenges. In order to create a secure IoT platform from the ground up, there is a need for a unifying operating system (OS) that can act as a cornerstone regulating the development of stable and secure solutions. In this paper, we present a classification of the security challenges stemming from the manifold aspects of IoT development. We also specify security requirements to direct the secure development of an unifying IoT OS to resolve many of those ensuing challenges. Survey of several modern IoT OSs confirm that while the developers of the OSs have taken many alternative approaches to implement security, we are far from engineering an adequately secure and unified architecture. More broadly, the study presented in this paper can help address the growing need for a secure and unified platform to base IoT development on and assure the safe, secure, and reliable operation of IoT in critical domains.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

Exploiting Semantic Technologies in Smart Environments and Grids: Emerging Roles and Case Studies

    Get PDF
Semantic technologies are currently spreading across several application domains as a reliable and consistent mean to address challenges related to organization, manipulation, visualization and exchange of data and knowledge. Different roles are actually played by these techniques depending on the application domain, on the timing constraints, on the distributed nature of applications, and so on. This paper provides an overview of the roles played by semantic technologies in the domain of smart grids and smart environments, with a particular focus on changes brought by such technologies in the adopted architectures, programming techniques and tools. Motivations driving the adoption of semantics in these different, but strictly intertwined, fields are introduced using a strong application-driven perspective. Two real-world case studies in smart grids and smart environments are presented to exemplify the roles covered by such technologies and the changes they fostered in software engineering processes. Learned lessons are then distilled and future adoption scenarios discussed

Developing Strategic Decision Making Process for Product and Service Planning

It is imperative to forecast advanced or emerging technologies to aid in decision making on firm\u27s R&D investments and business plan for commercialization efforts. Even though a company must align R&D planning with overall business planning such as manufacturing, sales and marketing, personnel, and finance, systematic management approaches are limited in it based upon the prediction of technological change and speed. This paper aims to provide a decision support tool to aid in strategic service planning and technology development in a firm. The study is to enhance strategic development of service and product with the consideration of emerging technologies. This model helps decision makers to easily identify emerging technologies and new research fields with systematic decision making process
