    Semantic Model Alignment for Business Process Integration

    Business process models describe an enterprise’s way of conducting business and in this form the basis for shaping the organization and engineering the appropriate supporting or even enabling IT. Thereby, a major task in working with models is their analysis and comparison for the purpose of aligning them. As models can differ semantically not only concerning the modeling languages used, but even more so in the way in which the natural language for labeling the model elements has been applied, the correct identification of the intended meaning of a legacy model is a non-trivial task that thus far has only been solved by humans. In particular at the time of reorganizations, the set-up of B2B-collaborations or mergers and acquisitions the semantic analysis of models of different origin that need to be consolidated is a manual effort that is not only tedious and error-prone but also time consuming and costly and often even repetitive. For facilitating automation of this task by means of IT, in this thesis the new method of Semantic Model Alignment is presented. Its application enables to extract and formalize the semantics of models for relating them based on the modeling language used and determining similarities based on the natural language used in model element labels. The resulting alignment supports model-based semantic business process integration. The research conducted is based on a design-science oriented approach and the method developed has been created together with all its enabling artifacts. These results have been published as the research progressed and are presented here in this thesis based on a selection of peer reviewed publications comprehensively describing the various aspects

    Complex adaptive systems based data integration : theory and applications

    Data Definition Languages (DDLs) have been created and used to represent data in programming languages and in database dictionaries. This representation includes descriptions in the form of data fields and relations in the form of a hierarchy, with the common exception of relational databases where relations are flat. Network computing created an environment that enables relatively easy and inexpensive exchange of data. What followed was the creation of new DDLs claiming better support for automatic data integration. It is uncertain from the literature if any real progress has been made toward achieving an ideal state or limit condition of automatic data integration. This research asserts that difficulties in accomplishing integration are indicative of socio-cultural systems in general and are caused by some measurable attributes common in DDLs. This research’s main contributions are: (1) a theory of data integration requirements to fully support automatic data integration from autonomous heterogeneous data sources; (2) the identification of measurable related abstract attributes (Variety, Tension, and Entropy); (3) the development of tools to measure them. The research uses a multi-theoretic lens to define and articulate these attributes and their measurements. The proposed theory is founded on the Law of Requisite Variety, Information Theory, Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) theory, Sowa’s Meaning Preservation framework and Zipf distributions of words and meanings. Using the theory, the attributes, and their measures, this research proposes a framework for objectively evaluating the suitability of any data definition language with respect to degrees of automatic data integration. This research uses thirteen data structures constructed with various DDLs from the 1960\u27s to date. No DDL examined (and therefore no DDL similar to those examined) is designed to satisfy the law of requisite variety. No DDL examined is designed to support CAS evolutionary processes that could result in fully automated integration of heterogeneous data sources. There is no significant difference in measures of Variety, Tension, and Entropy among DDLs investigated in this research. A direction to overcome the common limitations discovered in this research is suggested and tested by proposing GlossoMote, a theoretical mathematically sound description language that satisfies the data integration theory requirements. The DDL, named GlossoMote, is not merely a new syntax, it is a drastic departure from existing DDL constructs. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated with a small scale experiment and evaluated using the proposed assessment framework and other means.     Industrial systems have been developing into more and more complex systems during last decades. They have changed from centralized solutions to distributed, more robust, and more exible eco-systems comprising a high number of embedded systems. In recent years, we are witnessing the research trend in the area of embedded systems which concerns the very close integration of physical and computing systems. This dissertation thesis deals with the problem of the semantic integration of components (sensors and actuators) of cyber-physical systems within industrial automation domain and presents resulting bene ts. Cyber-physical systems were created based on the aforementioned trend of the close integration of computing systems and physical systems. This tight integration involves infrastructures responsible for control, computation, communication, and sensing. These systems are composed of many subsystems produced by various manufacturers, and the subsystems produce an enormous volume of data. Furthermore, data generated from all of the system parts has di erent dimensions, sampling rates, levels of details, etc. Next, cyber-physical systems form systems which represent building blocks of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) for example (Industrial) Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Smart Factories. Thus, the right understanding of data (data meanings, given context, subsystems purposes, and possible ways of subsystems integration) belong to essential requirements for enabling Industry 4.0 visions. In this thesis, the utilization of ontologies was proposed to deal with the semantic heterogeneity for enabling easier cyber-physical system components integration. Moreover, the current widespread e ort to create exible highly customized manufacturing requires novel methods for data handling together with subsequent data utilization. Storing knowledge and data in an ontology o ers a needed solution. For example, an ontology employment brings easy system data model management, increase an e ciency of cyber-physical system components interoperability, advanced data processing, reusability of sensors and actuators, and utilization of ontology matching methods for an integration of other data models. This work concerns the problem, how to describe cyber-physical system components using ontologies to enable e ective integration. Next, the ontology matching system suitable for integration of heterogeneous data models in industrial automation domain is described. The proposed solution of the semantic interoperability is demonstrated on the Plug&Play cyber-physical system components. On the other hand, storing data in an ontology and mainly processing of RDF statements brings one signi cant bottleneck | performance issue. Thus, Big Data technologies are employed for overcoming this issue together with a proposal of suitable storage data models. The overall approach is demonstrated on the proposed and developed prototype named Semantic Big Data Historian. In particular, the main contributions of the dissertation thesis are as follows: 1. The proposal of the solution for CPS low-level semantic integration based on Semantic web Technologies together with a veri cation of a feasibility of proposed approach using Semantic Big Data Historian. 2. The overcoming performance issues of processing shop floor data represented as RDF-triples with the help of Big Data technologies and suitable storage data models | vertical partitioning and hybrid SBDH model. 3. The proposal and implementation of a suitable way how to integrate heterogeneous data models from industrial automation domain where the highest precision and recall are required. The approach is based on similarity measures aggregation using self-organizing maps and user involvement with the help of active learning and visualization of self-organizing map output layer. 4. Enabling reusability of cyber-physical system components together with effortless configuration based on utilization of Semantic Web technologies.     Towards a Service-Oriented Architecture for Production Planning and Control: A Comprehensive Review and Novel Approach

    The trends of shorter product lifecycles, customized products, and volatile market environments require manufacturers to reconfigure their production increasingly frequent to maintain competitiveness and customer satisfaction. More frequent reconfigurations, however, are linked to increased efforts in production planning and control (PPC). This poses a challenge for manufacturers, especially in regard of demographic change and shortage of qualified labour, since many tasks in PPC are performed manually by domain experts. Following the paradigm of software-defined manufacturing, this paper targets to enable a higher degree of automation and interoperability in PPC by applying the concepts of service-oriented architecture. As a result, production planners are empowered to orchestrate tasks in PPC without consideration of underlying implementation details. At first, it is investigated how tasks in PPC can be represented as services with the aim of encapsulation and reusability. Secondly, a software architecture based on asset administration shells is presented that allows connection to production data sources and enables integration and usage of such PPC services. In this sense, an approach for mapping asset administrations shells to OpenAPI Specifications is proposed for interoperable and semantic integration of existing services and legacy systems.     In the last three decades information modelling and knowledge bases have become essentially important subjects not only in academic communities related to information systems and computer science but also in the business area where information technology is applied. The series of European – Japanese Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (EJC) originally started as a co-operation initiative between Japan and Finland in 1982. The practical operations were then organised by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland (Nordic countries). Geographical scope has expanded to cover Europe and also other countries. Workshop characteristic - discussion, enough time for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30) - is typical for the conference. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Conceptual modelling: Modelling and specification languages; Domain-specific conceptual modelling; Concepts, concept theories and ontologies; Conceptual modelling of large and heterogeneous systems; Conceptual modelling of spatial, temporal and biological data; Methods for developing, validating and communicating conceptual models. 2. Knowledge and information modelling and discovery: Knowledge discovery, knowledge representation and knowledge management; Advanced data mining and analysis methods; Conceptions of knowledge and information; Modelling information requirements; Intelligent information systems; Information recognition and information modelling. 3. Overall we received 56 submissions. After careful evaluation, 16 papers have been selected as long paper, 17 papers as short papers, 5 papers as position papers, and 3 papers for presentation of perspective challenges. We thank all colleagues for their support of this issue of the EJC conference, especially the program committee, the organising committee, and the programme coordination team. The long and the short papers presented in the conference are revised after the conference and published in the Series of “Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence” by IOS Press (Amsterdam). The books “Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases” are edited by the Editing Committee of the conference.
