    This paper discusses a technique used for construction of high-resolution image mosaic from a videosequence and the synchronously logged camera attitude information. It allows one to infer geometric characteristics of the imaged terrain and hence improve the mosaic quality and reduce the computational burden. The technique is demonstrated using numerical modeling and is applied to videodata collected on Rainsford Island, Mass. Calculation of the transformation relating consecutive image frames is an essential operation affecting reliability of the whole mosaicing process. Improvements to the algorithm are suggested, which significantly decrease the possibility of convergence to an inappropriate solution

    Enhancement of Underwater Video Mosaics for Post-Processing

    Mosaics of seafloor created from still images or video acquired underwater have proved to be useful for construction of maps of forensic and archeological sites, species\u27 abundance estimates, habitat characterization, etc. Images taken by a camera mounted on a stable platform are registered (at first pair-wise and then globally) and assembled in a high resolution visual map of the surveyed area. While this map is usually sufficient for a human orientation and even quantitative measurements, it often contains artifacts that complicate an automatic post-processing (for example, extraction of shapes for organism counting, or segmentation for habitat characterization). The most prominent artifacts are inter-frame seams caused by inhomogeneous artificial illumination, and local feature misalignments due to parallax effects - result of an attempt to represent a 3D world on a 2D map. In this paper we propose two image processing techniques for mosaic quality enhancement - median mosaic-based illumination correction suppressing appearance of inter-frame seams, and micro warping decreasing influence of parallax effects

    Large Area 3D Reconstructions from Underwater Surveys

    Robotic underwater vehicles can perform vast optical surveys of the ocean floor. Scientists value these surveys since optical images offer high levels of information and are easily interpreted by humans. Unfortunately the coverage of a single image is limited hy absorption and backscatter while what is needed is an overall view of the survey area. Recent work on underwater mosaics assume planar scenes and are applicable only to Situations without much relief. We present a complete and validated system for processing optical images acquired from an underwater mbotic vehicle to form a 3D reconstruction of the wean floor. Our approach is designed for the most general conditions of wide-baseline imagery (low overlap and presence of significant 3D structure) and scales to hundreds of images. We only assume a calibrated camera system and a vehicle with uncertain and possibly drifting pose information (e.g. a compass, depth sensor and a Doppler velocity Our approach is based on a combination of techniques from computer vision, photogrammetry and mhotics. We use a local to global approach to structure from motion, aided by the navigation sensors on the vehicle to generate 3D suhmaps. These suhmaps are then placed in a common reference frame that is refined by matching overlapping submaps. The final stage of processing is a bundle adjustment that provides the 3D structure, camera poses and uncertainty estimates in a consistent reference frame.     Estimating the best reference homography for planar mosaics from videos

    This paper proposes a novel strategy to find the best reference homography in mosaics from video sequences. The reference homography globally minimizes the distortions induced on each image frame by the mosaic homography itself. This method is designed for planar mosaics on which a bad choice of the first reference image frame can lead to severe distortions after concatenating several successive homographies. This often happens in the case of underwater mosaics with non-flat seabed and no georeferential information available. Given a video sequence of an almost planar surface, sub-mosaics with low distortions of temporally close image frames are computed and successively merged according to a hierarchical clustering procedure. A robust and effective feature tracker using an approximated global position map between image frames allows us to build the mosaic also between locally close but not temporally consecutive frames. Sub-mosaics are successively merged by concatenating their relative homographies with another reference homography which minimizes the distortion on each frame of the fused image. Experimental results on challenging real underwater videos show the validity of the proposed method

    A Low-Complexity Mosaicing Algorithm for Stock Assessment of Seabed-Burrowing Species

In these surveys, video transects of the seabed are captured and the population is estimated by counting the number of burrows in the video. The mosaicing algorithm is designed to process a large amount of video data and summarize the relevant features for the survey in a single image. Hence, the algorithm is designed to be computationally inexpensive while maintaining a high degree of robustness. We adopt a registration algorithm that employs a simple translational motion model and generates a mapping to the mosaic coordinate system using a concatenation of frame-by-frame homographies. A temporal smoothness prior is used in a maximum a posteriori homography estimation algorithm to reduce noise in the motion parameters in images with small amounts of texture detail. A multiband blending scheme renders the mosaic and is optimized for the application requirements. Tests on a large data set show that the algorithm is robust enough to allow the use of mosaics as a medium for burrow counting. This will increase the verifiability of the stock assessments as well as generate a ground truth data set for the learning of an automated burrow counting algorithm.This work was supported by the Science Foundation Ireland under Award SFI-PI 08/IN.1/I2112

    Underwater Video Survey: Planning and Data Processing

    The importance of underwater video surveys as an exploration tool has been steadily increasing over recent years [1]. Better photographic equipment, more effective sources of illumination, and improved processing techniques - all make video surveying a reliable tool for seafloor habitat mapping, sediment boundary delineation and groundtruthing, mapping and documentation of forensic and archaeological sites. There is a change in attitude towards video surveying that affects the way the data is collected, and hence its quality. Earlier video data processing algorithms had to cope with whatever was recorded (often simultaneously with acquisition of other data, considered to be more important). Now we have a chance to plan ahead and organize a survey in a way most suitable for the processing. The goal of this paper is to review available processing techniques and to discuss preferable survey patterns, associated errors and processing stability
