    Get PDF
Technology enhancements in the retail environment are constantly evolving, and the way consumers engage with retailers through these technological channels are becoming more seamless, most notably through the mobile channel. This study focuses on identifying how consumers currently utilize their mobile phone in retail environments across global markets. The global comparison aspect will allow for the discovery of how different top mobile-friendly societies and retail environments around the world integrate mobile capabilities as part of their retail experience. There is another challenge of understanding the desired mobile capabilities expected or demanded by consumers in local cultures in global markets. The methodology for this study is to design and distribute a survey that focuses on the consumption of mobile apps. The survey contains questions that will identify individualistic and collectivist behaviors, perceived usefulness, ease of use, and security of mobile apps, current social factors influencing mobile usage, and demographic information. The well-established and widely used Technology Readiness & Acceptance (TRA) model is used to help describe the differences in consumer behaviors. Constructs are under development to understand how western culture behaviors and eastern culture behaviors may influence the way in which consumers engage with these channels. The study is still in progress but based on previous academic research and a test survey that was distributed to both Ohio State campus domestic and Asian students, it is hypothesized that eastern culture behaviors will differ from western culture behaviors ultimately affecting their respective mobile app usage in retail settings. The results of this study will help retailers understand the importance of integrating a sound mobile strategy through mobile apps that will continuously engage and satisfy their consumers on a global scale. It will also allow retailers to understand their consumer’s needs in mobile apps and to further enhance brand engagement and loyalty. No embargoAcademic Major: Logistics ManagementAcademic Major: Marketin

TOWARDS EXTENDING THE ORIGINAL TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTANCE MODEL (TAM) FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION

    Get PDF
Technology acceptance model (TAM) is arguably the most widely used intention theory that explains the individual’s acceptance of a certain technology.  Since Davis introduced TAM in 1986, it has been applied and validated in a variety of disciplines, including educational sciences. However, scholars note that depending on a specific context, the original TAM needs to be extended, which has been done by introducing external variables and other theories. Despite the existent TAM2 and TAM3, numerous scholars still opt for the original TAM, extending it with the variables and theories that are relevant to the specific context of their study. The aim of the present paper is to provide an overview of validated TAM extensions, which might later help to further the understanding of educational technology acceptance, which is a prerequisite of its adoption. Since interdisciplinarity in various contexts is becoming more and more common, the overview presents TAM extensions that come from a number of different disciplines. The overview is based on 108 papers that were retrieved from the Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) by searching for the keywords ‘extended Technology Acceptance Model’, ‘extended TAM’, and ‘TAM extension’.

Mobile Information Systems: An Empirical Analysis of the Determinants of Mobile Commerce Acceptance in Jordan

    Get PDF
Although mobile commerce have been used and widely researched in developed nations, there is a low usage in the Arab world. Also, there is a limited empirical research on mobile commerce in Jordan despite the high penetration of mobile phone subscribers in 2009. Among the aims of this quantitative research is to empirically investigate the determinants of mobile commerce adoption in a collectivist culture such as Jordan where social norms are valued and individual actions are influenced greatly by important reference groups. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is extended to include four factors (facilitating conditions, cost, personal innovativeness in IT (PIIT) and subjective norms). Furthermore, in order to understand subjective norms in collectivist culture; subjective norms were decomposed into different levels (personal and societal injunctive and descriptive norms). The research framework consists of twelve latent variables (seven exogenous and five endogenous). Using self-administered survey, 40 items with 7-point Likert scale is used to collect data. Out of the 500 samples, 448 responses (89.6 % response rate) were collected; eventually 401 responses were usable. Structural Equation Modeling is applied to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that facilitating conditions, cost, PIIT, attitude and perceived usefulness are significant determinants of behavioral intention in Jordan. In addition, subjective norms, facilitating conditions, cost and perceived ease of use are significant antecedents of attitude which in turn influencing behavioral intention. Moreover, the empirical evidence indicated that personal injunctive norm, personal descriptive norm and societal injunctive norm are indeed antecedents of subjective norms. It can be concluded that extended TAM successfully enriched the model and increased the exploratory power to 53% in explaining behavioral intention variance

Integrating guanxi into technology acceptance: an empirical investigation of WeChat

    Get PDF
Social influence is an important research topic in the technology acceptance literature, in particular for social media. Prior empirical studies have for the most part employed social influence theory to investigate user intentions to continue with social media, while culture driven theories have been neglected. Rather than using social influence theory, we introduced guanxi theory to explore how guanxi social mechanisms (or processes) influence Chinese users’ continuance intentions in WeChat. Specifically, we developed a model that examines the role of guanxi as manifested by renqing, mianzi and ganqing in perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment and continuance intention in WeChat. A survey research method was adopted to test the proposed hypotheses. This study found that ganqing has a positive impact on perceived usefulness and continuance intention. Mianzi exerts a negative effect on continuance intention but exhibits a positive effect on perceived usefulness. Renqing was found to have no significant impact on perceived usefulness and continuance intention. Our study advances the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by introducing guanxi-based constructs in a Chinese mobile social-messaging application context. Our study also offers alternative insights on guanxi-based social influence processes in the Chinese technology acceptance literature

Determinants of mobile commerce adoption among university students in Malaysia

Mobile commerce has an increasing importance and development in offering a new platform to sell products effectively and efficiently. Despite numerous studies in the area of technology adoption, little is known about mobile commerce adoption in Malaysia and appropriate models that could explain the behaviours of young generations on the use of mobile commerce. This study attempts to propose a conceptual model for mobile commerce adoption by adapting the integrated TAM3 model and using Individual-Collectivism at Individual Level (ICAIL) as the moderating variable in the context of mobile commerce in Malaysia. In addition, this research also identifies factors that affect the perceived usefulness (i.e. subjective norm, image, output quality, result demonstrability), and perceived ease of use (selfefficacy, anxiety, perception of external control, playfulness) in the context of mobile commerce adoption among university students in Malaysia. A sample of 550 students from four universities in Malaysia was surveyed through a self-administrated questionnaire. The findings of this study found eight direct significant relationships between the tested variables, while nine hypotheses were not accepted. Firstly, in terms of perceived usefulness variable, image showed a significant relationship, whereas subjective norm, output quality and result demonstrability showed vice versa. Secondly, for perceived ease of use variable, factors of self-efficacy, perception of external control and playfulness showed significant relationships, while anxiety was found to be insignificant. Thirdly, while subjective norm had significant relationship with image, perceived usefulness indicated insignificant relationship with behavioural intention. Fourthly, perceived ease of use had significant relationships with perceived usefulness and behavioural intention. Finally, the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, subjective norm and behavioural intention showed insignificant relationship with the moderating variable, ICAIL. As a conclusion, the results from this study are important to the advancement of knowledge to the mobile commerce companies, services provider, financial services and government

A review of theories on technology acceptance: the case of mobile banking user retention in Saudi Arabia

    Get PDF
Mobile technologies have become a crucial functional element of modern organizations. They provide uninterrupted access to information, regardless of the user’s geographic location and time. Customer service, quality, satisfaction and retention are key proponents of measuring success and profitability in any organization. Due to the exponential growth of information technology, banks face dual competitive pressures to provide service quality and administrative efficiency. Accordingly, banks need to retain their existing users of mobile banking (m-banking) services to be able to benefit long term from this sustained usage behavior. The problem for banks is that the current understanding of determinants of m-banking sustained usage is limited. We propose some modifications to the DeLone and McLean Model (2003) of Information Systems Success in light of descriptive and relational studies, whereby the universal model may be applicable in post adoption user retention context. Using the findings of the review of theories and models, banks in Saudi Arabia can improve their m-banking strategies to achieve higher retention rates of existing users of m-banking services. While this study focused on m-banking user retention in the Saudi Arabian context catering to post adoption scenario, the purpose of this study is also to establish a universal measurement model for post adoption user perception of m-banking services, with global applicability

Mobile wallet inhibitors: Developing a comprehensive theory using an integrated model

    Get PDF
© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The concept of the mobile wallet is increasingly adopted in developed and developing countries for improving the scale, productivity, and excellence of banking services. Oman is one of the most growing countries of the Middle Eastern economies. Acceptance of mobile wallets in Oman is being hindered by various inhibitors. There is no study in the Middle Eastern countries that addressed the concerns of probable inhibitors influencing mobile wallet acceptance from expert's perspective. In this study, eleven key inhibitors to mobile wallet adoption are identified from the literature and expert's feedback. This study employed Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) in conjunction with fuzzy MICMAC to reveal the intricate relationship among inhibitors to mobile wallet acceptance. To the end, an integrated hierarchical model is developed to understand the influence of a particular inhibitor on others. ‘Anxiety towards new technology’ ‘Lack of new technology skills’ ‘Lack of awareness of mobile wallet benefits’ and ‘Complexity of new technology’ have been reported as key inhibitors to promote mobile wallets in Oman. This study also suggests several recommendations for banking organizations and policymakers in developing the effective model to popularize mobile wallets in Oman
