Stay-at-home Fathers in Contemporary Urban China
This research investigates stay-at-home fathers (SAHFs) as an emerging gendered identity in contemporary urban China. Being a SAHF constitutes an unconventional gender role in China, which has been marginalised by longstanding prejudice against men who are not the main wage-earners in the family unit. My scrutiny of the discourse surrounding this new role contributes to existing literature on the social production of gender difference and hierarchy in urban China. This research is particularly significant now, at a time when gender inequalities in China coexist with an increasingly individualistic culture, and yet these inequalities remain largely unaddressed by government discourse and often reinforced through popular discourse.
This research seeks to answer three questions: What motivates men to become SAHFs? How do they perceive, experience, and enact their role as SAHFs? How does the construction of SAHF masculinity intersect with changing representations of urban family life and masculinity in contemporary urban China? To address these three interrelated questions, I examine three sources of data about SAHFs â TV dramas, social media articles, and interviews â focusing on how SAHFsâ perceptions, experiences, and practices are understood both by SAHFs themselves and wider society.
Current research on SAHFs has been predominantly focused on the Global North to the extent that this is the first research on SAHFs in mainland China that focuses on how multiple discourses contribute to the construction and reconstruction of familial masculinity and wider family relations. By highlighting the plurality and ongoing reconfiguration of masculinity that has emerged from my three data sources, I show how discourse produced by and about SAHFs not only sustains but also sometimes transforms conventional notions of gender. In doing so, my research adds new perspectives to existing literature on Chinese masculinities and family life, as well as studies of SAHFs and the family in other countries
Personality Dysfunction Manifest in Words : Understanding Personality Pathology Using Computational Language Analysis
Personality disorders (PDs) are some of the most prevalent and high-risk mental health conditions, and yet remain poorly understood. Today, the development of new technologies means that there are advanced tools that can be used to improve our understanding and treatment of PD. One promising tool â indeed, the focus of this thesis â is computational language analysis. By looking at patterns in how people with personality pathology use words, it is possible to gain access into their constellation of thinking, feelings, and behaviours. To date, however, there has been little research at the intersection of verbal behaviour and personality pathology. Accordingly, the central goal of this thesis is to demonstrate how PD can be better understood through the analysis of natural language. This thesis presents three research articles, comprising four empirical studies, that each leverage computational language analysis to better understand personality pathology. Each paper focuses on a distinct core feature of PD, while incorporating language analysis methods: Paper 1 (Study 1) focuses on interpersonal dysfunction; Paper 2 (Studies 2 and 3) focuses on emotion dysregulation; and Paper 3 (Study 4) focuses on behavioural dysregulation (i.e., engagement in suicidality and deliberate self-harm). Findings from this research have generated better understanding of fundamental features of PD, including insight into characterising dimensions of social dysfunction (Paper 1), maladaptive emotion processes that may contribute to emotion dysregulation (Paper 2), and psychosocial dynamics relating to suicidality and deliberate self-harm (Paper 3) in PD. Such theoretical knowledge subsequently has important implications for clinical practice, particularly regarding the potential to inform psychological therapy. More broadly, this research highlights how language can provide implicit and unobtrusive insight into the personality and psychological processes that underlie personality pathology at a large-scale, using an individualised, naturalistic approach
Philosophies of Empirical and Habitual Teaching: Healthy Vocal Methodologies in Higher Education for the Twenty-first Century
Despite research done on healthy vocal methodologies, there are continuous changes in how best to prepare collegiate music students, relating to their emotional health through empirical and habitual teachings. This study will show how healthy vocal methodologies can influence higher education vocal students of the twenty-first century. This qualitative study can build a bridge to related topics in an exploratory framework with perspectives on: Dr. William Hettlerâs Emotional Well-Being and its seven dimensions, Jean Piaget\u27s Cognitive Construction Theory, Peter Salovey and John Mayer\u27s Emotional Intelligence Theory, Daniel Golemanâs Social Emotional Learning Methodology, Susan Brookhartâs âClassroometricsâ Theory, Howard Gardnerâs Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Imagery-Based Learning Methodology, and Learning-Based Methodology. By applying these theories and methodologies to the study, one can gain a better understanding of the process of higher education music students\u27 vocal background. In addition, music educators can facilitate and address relevant concerns regarding healthy vocal techniques that oneâs emotional condition may influence. This study highlights gaps in the research on constructive and adverse effects of habitual and empirical vocal technique studies through interviews and facilitated lessons with higher education participants, which is essential because a solid foundation for music students\u27 success begins with vocal health. Based on new and developing perspectives of empirical and habitual teachings, this research will seek to explore findings benefiting music educators, vocal students, and further develop music specialistsâ knowledge of what may affect higher education music students\u27 vocal health by discovering constructive and adverse habits that arise from empirical and habitual musical experiences
An examination of the verbal behaviour of intergroup discrimination
This thesis examined relationships between psychological flexibility, psychological inflexibility, prejudicial attitudes, and dehumanization across three cross-sectional studies with an additional proposed experimental study. Psychological flexibility refers to mindful attention to the present moment, willing acceptance of private experiences, and engaging in behaviours congruent with oneâs freely chosen values. Inflexibility, on the other hand, indicates a tendency to suppress unwanted thoughts and emotions, entanglement with oneâs thoughts, and rigid behavioural patterns. Study 1 found limited correlations between inflexibility and sexism, racism, homonegativity, and dehumanization. Study 2 demonstrated more consistent positive associations between inflexibility and prejudice. And Study 3 controlled for right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation, finding inflexibility predicted hostile sexism and racism beyond these factors. While showing some relationships, particularly with sexism and racism, psychological inflexibility did not consistently correlate with varied prejudices across studies.
The proposed randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention to reduce sexism through enhanced psychological flexibility. Overall, findings provide mixed support for the utility of flexibility-based skills in addressing complex societal prejudices. Research should continue examining flexibility integrated with socio-cultural approaches to promote equity
Effectiveness of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with Chinese Couple Clients: From the Chinese EFT Therapists\u27 Cultural Lens
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the Chinese EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) therapistsâ experiences of working with Chinese couples in EFT sessions, as well as to discover how the cultural factors play a role in the effectiveness of EFT use with Chinese couples. This study was conducted by finding out 10 EFT-oriented therapists and analyzing via online interviews their experiences of working with Chinese couples. The theories guiding this study are based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). One of the founding therapists of this approach is Dr. Sue Johnson. EFT is heavily influenced by attachment theory, which was first developed by John Bowlby. This study also reviews EFTâs major theoretical constructsâemotional, systematic, humanistic and experiential theories. The data was collected by doing semi-structured interviews virtually with 10 Chinese EFT-oriented therapists in China. The methods of analysis of the data was done by discovering themes or phenomena through their significant statements, then analyzing and evaluating the themes to distill the essence of the phenomenon
The role of heterosocial perception in men's likelihood to sexually harass
Sexual harassment against women represents sexually aggressive and coercive behaviour that violates womenâs dignity and creates an offensive environment, which threatens womenâs well-being and ability to prosper in day to day life (Pina, Gannon & Saunders, 2009). Understanding the perceptual characteristics of men with inclinations to sexually harass, through how they perceive women is important in delineating the reasons why some men may engage in the sexual harassment of women. Heterosocial perception is a concept of how an individual perceives another person interacting with the opposite sex. It is typically measured using the Test of Reading Affective Cues (TRAC), a tool encompassing an array of video clips showing a woman interacting with a man, whereby the woman displays a range of affective cues. The perceiver is assessed on their perceptual accuracy when judging the affective cues. Perceptual accuracies of male rapists and male child molesters have been well researched (Lipton, McDonel & McFall, 1987; Stahl & Sacco, 1995), yet male sexual harassment as a singular category has been neglected. The current thesis explores the potential heterosocial perception characteristics of a distinct group of men who are relatively high in the likelihood to engage in sexual harassment of women from scores on Pryorâs (1987) Likelihood to Sexually Harass (LSH) scale focusing on their differences in performance on the TRAC in comparison to those men who are lower in the likelihood to engage in sexual harassment of women.
Five empirical studies are reported in this thesis. Study 1 presents a modernized version of the TRAC and incorporates an analysis to develop it as a research tool, enabling judgements on five affective cues displayed by a woman; friendly, romantic, neutral, bored and rejecting. The tool provides this range of affective cues that were used in later studies to measure differences in heterosocial perception. Study 2 addressed theoretical explanations taken from previous perception research with sexually aggressive men (Malamuth & Brown, xiv 1994) to explain differences in heterosocial perception for men high in LSH. Explanations are given for potential biases evidenced by men high in LSH focusing on Error Management Theory (Haselton & Buss, 2000) arguing that an overperception bias will increase the frequency of falsely inferring a womanâs sexual intent towards sexual pursuit, but considerably reduce the costs of losing a sexual opportunity by falsely inferring that a woman lacked sexual intent. Altogether, study 2 provided support for the misidentification of negative affective cues (negativeness blindness), the overperception of negative affective cues and the romantic overperception bias of friendly affective cues in the perception of men high in LSH.
Study 3 tested the established theoretical link that internal concepts of social power have within men who report sexual aggression and sexual coercion and the subsequent impact on perception. Unexpectedly, power did not exacerbate perceptual inaccuracy for negative affective cues and the romantic overperception bias of friendly affective cues. In study 4, objectification was assessed in its relationship to perception in high LSH men. Instrumental and both specific and general sexual objectification were significantly higher for men high in LSH. Specific sexual objectification was found to negatively mediate romantic categorizations of romantic affective cues, but general sexual objectification was found to positively mediate romantic categorizations of friendly affective cues for men high in LSH. Results also showed that men high in LSH showed poorest perceptual accuracy on bored and rejecting affective cues, and evidenced a greater romantic judgement of friendly affective cues overperception bias. In study 5, the impact of different mental states on perception was assessed, via the use of a cooling system to facilitate self-regulation. A cooling system is a psychological framework proposed for understanding self-control (Metcalfe & Mischel, 1999), and in this study it incorporated techniques of distraction, distancing and empathy enhancement. Results showed that the cooling system was not beneficial in making high LSH xv menâs perceptual judgements more accurate and in making their judgements accurate to the level of low and medium LSH men for negative affective cues. However, cooling did improve perceptual accuracy of friendly affective cues removing the overperception bias to romantic judgements in comparison to the neutral condition. The cooling system was not found to reduce instrumental and sexual objectification for high LSH men. There were differences found on empathy between men high and low and medium on LSH. Differences were found such that men high in LSH showed more state empathy, but less trait empathy than men low and medium in LSH
Gottman Processes and Couple Outcomes While Navigating Infertility
Infertility remains one of the most difficult relational contexts for couples. However, some research suggests that some couples actually increase their overall satisfaction in their relationship through infertility due to a deeply shared emotional experience. To the knowledge of the author of this dissertation, no studies exist which explain how couples arrive at their relational outcomes through the experience of infertility. These studies within this dissertation add to the present literature by explaining how couples may arrive at their relational outcome through the lens of Gottman Method Couple Therapy (GMCT). For both studies presented here, 902 participants were recruited through various social media platforms. Participants completed scales regarding their overall satisfaction in their couple relationship, their perceived relational impact of their experience of infertility, as well as the Sound Relationship House Questionnaire (SRH-Q). Various aspects of the Gottman theoretical framework were examined, including Friendship and Intimacy, Shared Meaning, and Quality Sex, Passion, and Romance. These Gottman factors were also examined as a mediator between the relationship between overall couple satisfaction and the relational impact of infertility Further, Gottman Conflict Processes were also examined as a mediator, with Gottman Conflict Management (i.e., Compromise and Effective Repair Attempts) acting as a moderator within the mediation model. Significant bivariate correlations were found between relational quality of life during infertility and overall couple satisfaction (r = .354, p \u3c .001). Friendship and Intimacy (ÎČ = .066), Shared Meaning (ÎČ = .191), and Quality Sex, Passion, and Romance (ÎČ = .155), along with Gottman Conflict Processes (ÎČ = .016), were all found to be mediators between relational quality of life during infertility and couple satisfaction. However, Gottman Conflict Management was found to moderate the relationship between quality of life during infertility and Gottman Conflict Processes within the moderated mediation model. Thus, Gottman couple therapy processes provided pathways to explain how couples within this sample arrived at their outcomes amidst infertility. Future directions for research will be discussed, as well as clinical implications and specific Gottman interventions for GMCT with this special population
Cultural Perspectives in Pain and Palliative Care
Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients are constantly challenged by the different levels on which lack of cultural competency or bias occurs in healthcare. This literature review focuses on the healthcare providersâ experiences when providing pain and palliative care to CALD populations and explores the challenges that may result in health inequalities. A review of current literature was conducted using PubMed, CINHAL, Sage Journals, Ovid, and Science Direct electronic databases. Sixteen published articles between 2015-2023 were reviewed. Findings from this review identified factors that induce poor quality palliative, pain, and end-of-life (EOL) care among culturally diverse groups. Improving quality of care stresses the importance of overcoming cultural and linguistic challenges in order to become culturally adept in practice. Communication barriers between healthcare providers and patients was the most prominent theme identified across all studies
Constructing a profile for proactive career self-management in public higher education institutions in Ghana
Text in English with abstracts and keywords in English, isiXhosa, and isiZuluThe principal focus of this research study was to investigate the relationship among psychosocial career pre-occupation, social connectedness, and organisational commitment, and to determine whether an overall proactive career management profile can be constructed to inform career self-management practices in public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ghana. Again, the research study intended to provide a background for testing hypotheses and theories as well as moderating the effect of socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, marital status and job level) on the relationship between psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and organisational commitment.
A cross-sectional quantitative approach was conducted on a purposively selected sample of senior staff comprising academic and administrative staff (n = 288), from a single public higher educational institution in Ghana. The measuring instruments include a career pre-occupations inventory workplace friendship scale and an organisational commitment scale. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis), bi-variate correlation analysis (Pearson product moment correlation coefficient), and inferential and multivariate statistics (SEM analysis, moderated regression analysis, ANOVAs and independent sample t-test) were used for the study.
Descriptive, bi-variate correlation and inferential statistics revealed that individual psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and organisational commitment can be used as elements within a proactive career self-management framework within the Ghanaian higher education institutions. The results of the moderated analysis showed that respondentsâ gender and job level moderated employeesâ level of psychosocial career pre-occupations in predicting organisational commitment. Furthermore, the test for significant mean differences revealed that gender, marital status and job level differed marginally in their psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and commitment to the organisation.
Theoretically and empirically, the results advanced the career construction theory by empirically validating the core elements of career self-management. Design for Accessible Collaborative Engagement: Making online synchronous collaborative learning more accessible for students with sensory impairments.
This thesis looks at the accessibility of collaborative learning and the barriers to engagement experienced by blind/visually impaired (BVI) students and deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) students. It focuses specifically on online synchronous collaborative learning after establishing that this format presented the greatest barriers, and that these student groups were not engaging.
Taking a design-based research (DBR) approach, five studies were undertaken to identify these barriers and determine potential interventions. The product of the research, a result of collaborative design by the participants in the study, is a framework for accessible collaborative engagement represented in the form of an interactive website model, the Model for Accessible Collaborative Engagement (MACE).
The studies involved representatives of all stakeholders in the collaborative learning process at the institution (the Open University): students, tutors, modules teams, academics, support staff, and the student union Disabled Students Group. These studies took the form of an online survey of 327 students, 10 interviews with staff and students, 6 staff workshops and a collaborative design focus group. With significant representation of the target groups (BVI and DHH) in all studies, and taking an iterative approach to the design, evaluation and construction of the framework model, the studies established that barriers existed in four main categories covering different themes:
1. Communications: aural, visual, screen reading and navigation, text and captioning, lip reading and non-verbal communications, interpretation and third-party communications, mode control, and synchronisation.
2. Emotional and Social Factors: familiarisation, support networks, self-advocacy, opting out, cognitive load, and stress and anxiety.
3. Provisioning and Technical Factors: dissemination, speed and pacing of sessions, staff training, participation control, group size, technical provisioning, and recordings.
4. Activity and Session Design: Volume of materials, advance materials, accessible materials, accessible activities, and session formats.
Interventions were designed that could reduce the barriers in each of these categories and themes by adjustments and changes from both the student and institutional standpoints. MACE is designed to be utilised by both students and staff to provide guidance and suggestions on how to identify and acknowledge these barriers and implement interventions to reduce them.
This research represents an original and essential contribution to the field of investigation. As well as informing future research inquiry, the model can be used by all participants and stakeholders in online collaborative learning to help reduce barriers for BVI and DHH students and improve inclusivity in synchronous online events
