    Sustainability, transport and design: reviewing the prospects for safely encouraging eco-driving

    Private vehicle use contributes a disproportionately large amount to the degradation of the environment we inhabit. Technological advancement is of course critical to the mitigation of climate change, however alone it will not suffice; we must also see behavioural change. This paper will argue for the application of Ergonomics to the design of private vehicles, particularly low-carbon vehicles (e.g. hybrid and electric), to encourage this behavioural change. A brief review of literature is offered concerning the effect of the design of a technological object on behaviour, the inter-related nature of goals and feedback in guiding performance, the effect on fuel economy of different driving styles, and the various challenges brought by hybrid and electric vehicles, including range anxiety, workload and distraction, complexity, and novelty. This is followed by a discussion on the potential applicability of a particular design framework, namely Ecological Interface Design, to the design of in-vehicle interfaces that encourage energy-conserving driving behaviours whilst minimising distraction and workload, thus ensuring safety

    Prospects of electric vehicles in the developing countries : a literature review

    Electric mobility offers a low cost of travel along with energy and harmful emissions savings. Nevertheless, a comprehensive literature review is missing for the prospects of electric vehicles in developing countries. Such an overview would be instrumental for policymakers to understand the barriers and opportunities related to different types of electric vehicles (EVs). Considering the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic review was performed of the electronic databases Google Scholar and Web of Science for the years 2010–2020. The electric four-wheelers, hybrid electric vehicles and electric two-wheeler constituted the electric vehicles searched in the databases. Initially, 35 studies identified in the Web of Science that matched the criteria were studied. Later, 105 other relevant reports and articles related to barriers and opportunities were found by using Google Scholar and studied. Results reveal that electric four-wheelers are not a feasible option in developing countries due to their high purchase price. On the contrary, electric two-wheelers may be beneficial as they come with a lower purchase price

    Electric vehicle possibilities using low power and light weight range extenders

    Electric cars have the disadvantage of a limited range, and drivers may experience a range anxiety. This range anxiety can be solved by adding a range extender. But, the range extender should be light so as not to significantly increase the weight of the original vehicle. In urban areas with dense traffic (usually developing countries), the average speed around cities is typically lower than 50km/h. This means, the rolling resistance losses are more important than aerodynamic losses, and a weight reduction results in a bigger electrical range. Therefore, smaller and lighter range extenders are of much interest. The contribution of this paper is to indicate the possibility of range extenders with less than 25 kg with a capacity of 150 to 200 cc to suit a condition where weight counts. In this paper, the cost, environmental and grid impacts of going electric are also discussed. The effect of high altitude and driving style on the performance of an electric vehicle is assessed. The challenges and opportunities of vehicle electrification between countries with decarbonated power generation and fossil fuel dominated power generation are highlighted. Throughout the article, the case of Ethiopia is taken as an example

    Fear and loathing of electric vehicles: the reactionary rhetoric of range anxiety

    “Range anxiety,” defined as the psychological anxiety a consumer experiences in response to the limited range of an electric vehicle, continues to be labelled and presented as one of the most pressing barriers to their mainstream diffusion. As a result, academia, policymakers and even industry have focused on addressing the range anxiety barrier in order to accelerate adoption. Much literature recognizes that range anxiety is increasingly psychological, rather than technical, in its nature. However, we argue in this paper that even psychological and technical explanations are incomplete. We examine range anxiety through Hirschman’s Rhetoric of Reaction, which supposes that conservative forces may oppose change by propagating theses related to jeopardy, perversity, and futility. To do so, we use three qualitative methods to understand the role of range anxiety triangulated via a variety of perspectives: 227 semi-structured interviews with experts at 201 institutions, a survey with nearly 5,000 respondents, and 8 focus groups, all across 17 cities in the five Nordic countries. We find evidence where consumers and experts use and perpetuate the rhetoric of reaction, particularly the jeopardy thesis. We conclude with a reexamination of the policies geared to assuage range-based barriers, which a construction of range anxiety as a rhetorical excuse would render as ineffective or inefficient, as well as future implications for diffusion theory

    Exploring the Role of Perceived Range Anxiety in Adoption Behavior of Plug-in Electric Vehicles

    A sustainable solution to negative externalities imposed by road transportation is replacing internal combustion vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), especially plug-in EV (PEV) encompassing plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) and battery EV (BEV). However, EV market share is still low and is forecast to remain low and uncertain. This shows a research need for an in-depth understanding of EV adoption behavior with a focus on one of the main barriers to the mass EV adoption, which is the limited electric driving range. The present study extends the existing literature in two directions; First, the influence of the psychological aspect of driving range, which is referred to as range anxiety, is explored on EV adoption behavior by presenting a nested logit (NL) model with a latent construct. Second, the two-level NL model captures individuals' decision on EV adoption behavior distinguished by vehicle transaction type and EV type, where the upper level yields the vehicle transaction type selected from the set of alternatives including no-transaction, sell, trade, and add. The fuel type of the vehicles decided to be acquired, either as traded-for or added vehicles, is simultaneously determined at the lower level from a set including conventional vehicle, hybrid EV, PHEV, and BEV. The model is empirically estimated using a stated preferences dataset collected in the State of California. A notable finding is that anxiety about driving range influences the preference for BEV, especially as an added than traded-for vehicle, but not the decision on PHEV adoption.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures, 5 table

    TamagoCar: Using a Simulation App to explore Price Elasticity of Demand for Electricity of Electric Vehicle Users

    The integration of electric vehicles (EV) into the smart grid is bounded by high variability of demand for electricity, unwillingness of consumers to change behavior as well as low degree of product familiarity. Especially the absence of real-time energy tariffs constrains the widespread use of EVs as sustainable alternatives to a combustion engine. We propose to explore the behavior of EV users with a specifically designed application, TamagoCar, which combines the users’ real world driving behavior with a simulated EV environment. We hypothesize that the EV users will adjust their demand for electricity as a function of uncertainty about future price, range anxiety, uncertainty about future travel and social influence. With our application we enable the end users to gain experience with using an EV as well as adjust their electricity demand in response to real-time price changes with respect to their individual preferences, social influence and macroeconomic conditions
