    People increasingly turn to news on mobile devices, often while out and about, attending to daily tasks. Yet, we know little about whether attention to and learning from information on a mobile differs by the setting of use. This study builds on Multiple Resource Theory (Wickens, 1984) and the Resource Competition Framework (Oulasvirta et al., 2005) to compare visual attention to a dynamic newsfeed, varying only the setting: private or public. We use mobile eye-tracking to evaluate the effects of setting on attention and assess correspondent learning differences after exposure to the feed, which allows us to uncover a relationship between attention and learning. Findings indicate higher visual attention to mobile newsfeed posts in public, relative to a private setting. Moreover, scrolling through news on a smartphone in public attenuates some knowledge gain but is beneficial for other learning outcomes

    Understanding and improving mobile reading via scalable and low cost sensing

    In recent years, due to the increasing ubiquity of Internet and mobile devices, mobile reading on smart watches and smartphones is experiencing rapid growth. Despite the great potential, new challenges are brought. Compared to traditional reading, mobile reading faces major challenges such as encountering more frequent distractions and lacking portable and efficient technique to deeply understand and improve it. Fortunately, the development of the hardware and software of mobile devices provide an opportunity to track usersโ€™ behavior and physiological signals accurately in a low-cost and portable manner. In this thesis, I explored the usage of low-cost mobile sensors to solve the measurement challenges of reading. I used the low-cost mobile sensing techniques on mobile devices to understand and improve the degree and quality of reading. In this thesis, I first present SmartRSVP, a reading interface on smart watches that leverages eye-gaze contact tracking technique and heart rate sensing technique to facilitate reading under distractions. I then present Lepton, an intelligent reading system on smart phones that tracks eye-gaze periodical patterns and sensing the screen touching behavior to monitor readersโ€™ cognitions and emotions during reading. Lastly, I present StrategicReading, which uses the implicitly captured eye gaze patterns, scrolling motions, and log histories to monitor usersโ€™ reading strategies and performance during multiple-sources online reading

    Exploring blog spaces: A study of blog reading experiences using dynamic contextual displays

    In this paper we report on an eye-tracking experiment conducted with 60 participants to gain an understanding of how people interact with blog environments. We compared a standard blog interface with a novel contextual blog interface, which dynamically adjusts its contextual navigation to a selected article. We measured task performance and interaction behaviour for explorative tasks and goal-oriented search tasks. We further collected subjective feedback to evaluate user preferences. We found that participants using the contextual blog interface completed search tasks 19% faster and made 80% fewer errors. Moreover, participants using the contextual blog interface interacted more with the provided information during the exploration tasks. We did not find significant differences in user preference overall between both blog interfaces. However, a more detailed analysis of our results suggests significant demographic differences for performance, behavioural and subjective measures. ยฉ 2009 The Author

    With the global expansion of the Internet and the World Wide Web, users are becoming increasingly diverse, particularly in terms of languages. In fact, the number of polyglot Web users across the globe has increased dramatically. However, even such multilingual users often continue to suffer from unbalanced and fragmented news information, as traditional news access systems seldom allow users to simultaneously search for and/or compare news in different languages, even though prior research results have shown that multilingual users make significant use of each of their languages when searching for information online. Relatively little human-centered research has been conducted to better understand and support multilingual user abilities and preferences. In particular, in the fields of cross-language and multilingual search, the majority of research has focused primarily on improving retrieval and translation accuracy, while paying comparably less attention to multilingual user interaction aspects. The research presented in this thesis provides the first large-scale investigations of multilingual news consumption and querying/search result selection behaviors, as well as a detailed comparative analysis of polyglotsโ€™ preferences and behaviors with respect to different multilingual news search interfaces on desktop and mobile platforms. Through a set of 4 phases of user studies, including surveys, interviews, as well as task-based user studies using crowdsourcing and laboratory experiments, this thesis presents the first human-centered studies in multilingual news access, aiming to drive the development of personalized multilingual news access systems to better support each individual user

    Web search on hand-held devices has become enormously common and popular. Although a number of studies have revealed how users interact with search engine result pages (SERPs) on desktop monitors, there are still only few studies related to user interaction in mobile web search, and search results are shown in a similar way whether on a mobile phone or a desktop. Therefore, it is still difficult to know what happens between users and SERPs while searching on small screens, and this means that the current presentation of SERPs on mobile devices may not be the best. According to the findings from previous studies, including our earlier work, we can confirm that search behaviour on touch-enabled mobile devices is different from behaviour with desktop screens, and so we need to consider a different SERP presentation design for mobile devices. In this thesis, we explore several user interactions during search with the aim of improving search experience on smartphones. First, one remarkable trend of mobile devices is their enlargement of screen sizes during the last few years. This leads us to look for differences in search behaviour on different sized small screens, and if there are any, to suggest better presentation of search results for each screen size. In the first study, we investigated search performance, behaviour, and user satisfaction on three small screens (3.6 inches for early smartphones, 4.7 inches for recent smart-phones and 5.5 inches for phablets). We found no significant differences with respect to the efficiency of carrying out tasks. However, participants exhibited different search behaviours on the small, medium, and large sizes of small screens, respectively: a higher chance of scrolling with the worst user satisfaction on the smallest screen; fast information extraction with some hesitation before selecting a link on the medium screen; and less eye movements on top links on the largest screen. These results suggest that the presentation of web search results for each screen size needs to take into account differences in search behaviour. Second, although people are familiar with turning pages horizontally while reading books, vertical scrolling is the standard option that people have available while searching on mobile devices. So following a suggestion from the first study, in the second study we explored the effect of horizontal and vertical viewport control types (pagination versus scrolling) with various positions of a correct answer in mobile web search. Our findings suggest that although users are more familiar with scrolling, participants spent less time to find the correct answer with pagination, especially when the relevant result is located beyond the page fold. In addition, participants using scrolling exhibited less interest in lower-ranked results even if the documents were relevant. The overall result indicates that it is worthwhile providing different viewport controls for better search experiences in mobile web search. Third, snippets occupy the biggest space in each search result. Results from a previous study suggested that snippet length affects search performance on a desktop monitor. Due to the smaller screen, the effect seems to be much larger on smartphones. As one possible idea for a SERP presentation design from the first study, we investigated appropriate snippet lengths on mobile devices in the third study. We compared search behaviour with three different snippet lengths, that is, one line, two to three lines, and six or more lines of snippets on mobile SERPs. We found that with long snippets, participants needed longer search time for a particular task type, and the longer time consumption provided no better search accuracy. Our findings suggest that this search performance is related to viewport movements and user attention. We expect that our proposed approaches provide ways to understand mobile web search behaviour, and that the findings can be applied to a wide range of research areas such as human-computer integration, information retrieval, and even social science for a better presentation design of SERP on mobile devices

    MRnews: Design Explorations into Accessibility and News

    Creating accessible technology and content is generally seen as beneficial for all users. This is particularly important when the content has a significant societal impact, such as news stories. To find new and innovative ways to engage users, digital news outlets are faced with challenges related to accessibility. In the case of Mixed Reality (MR) technology, the increasing interest emphasizes the need for the technology to be inclusive and accessible. The embodied nature and affordances of MR technology enable users to manipulate virtual objects using real-world knowledge and in real-time and enable them to utilize a wide range of skills when interacting with such systems. In turn, leveraging these affordances can enhance the accessibility of the task at hand. Contributions to developing accessibility guidelines have been made, and the use of MR applications to enhance accessibility is on the rise. However, these contributions are most prominent in education and not for leisurely use. This research project investigates the affordances of MR and of the Augmented Reality (AR) Head Mounted Display (HMD), HoloLens 2 (HL2) in particular, and how these can be leveraged to enhance accessibility when reading digital news. This is a Research through Design (RtD) project carried out in participation with users by conducting design activities and user evaluations. The RtD-process is supported by prototypes developed through an iterative process. MRnews is an application built for Microsoftโ€™s AR HMD, the HL2. The implemented design showcases how news content creators and developers can leverage the affordances of MR technology to achieve accessibility in news stories. They superimpose safety-critical information on top of the drivers forward field of view and thereby help drivers keep their eyes forward while driving. Since the first introduction about three decades ago, automotive HUDs have been available in various commercial vehicles. Despite the long history and potential benefits of automotive HUDs, however, the design of useful automotive HUDs remains a challenging problem. In an effort to contribute to the design of useful automotive HUDs, this doctoral dissertation research conducted four studies. In Study 1, the functional requirements of automotive HUDs were investigated by reviewing the major automakers' automotive HUD products, academic research studies that proposed various automotive HUD functions, and previous research studies that surveyed drivers HUD information needs. The review results indicated that: 1) the existing commercial HUDs perform largely the same functions as the conventional in-vehicle displays, 2) past research studies proposed various HUD functions for improving driver situation awareness and driving safety, 3) autonomous driving and other new technologies are giving rise to new HUD information, and 4) little research is currently available on HUD users perceived information needs. Based on the review results, this study provides insights into the functional requirements of automotive HUDs and also suggests some future research directions for automotive HUD design. In Study 2, the interface design of automotive HUDs for communicating safety-related information was examined by reviewing the existing commercial HUDs and display concepts proposed by academic research studies. Each display was analyzed in terms of its functions, behaviors and structure. Also, related human factors display design principles, and, empirical findings on the effects of interface design decisions were reviewed when information was available. The results indicated that: 1) information characteristics suitable for the contact-analog and unregistered display formats, respectively, are still largely unknown, 2) new types of displays could be developed by combining or mixing existing displays or display elements at both the information and interface element levels, and 3) the human factors display principles need to be used properly according to the situation and only to the extent that the resulting display respects the limitations of the human information processing, and achieving balance among the principles is important to an effective design. On the basis of the review results, this review suggests design possibilities and future research directions on the interface design of safety-related automotive HUD systems. In Study 3, automotive HUD-based take-over request (TOR) displays were developed and evaluated in terms of drivers take-over performance and visual scanning behavior in a highly automated driving situation. Four different types of TOR displays were comparatively evaluated through a driving simulator study - they were: Baseline (an auditory beeping alert), Mini-map, Arrow, and Mini-map-and-Arrow. Baseline simply alerts an imminent take-over, and was always included when the other three displays were provided. Mini-map provides situational information. Arrow presents the action direction information for the take-over. Mini-map-and-Arrow provides the action direction together with the relevant situational information. This study also investigated the relationship between drivers initial trust in the TOR displays and take-over and visual scanning behavior. The results indicated that providing a combination of machine-made decision and situational information, such as Mini-map-and-Arrow, yielded the best results overall in the take-over scenario. Also, drivers initial trust in the TOR displays was found to have significant associations with the take-over and visual behavior of drivers. The higher trust group primarily relied on the proposed TOR displays, while the lower trust group tended to more check the situational information through the traditional displays, such as side-view or rear-view mirrors. In Study 4, the effect of interactive HUD imagery location on driving and secondary task performance, driver distraction, preference, and workload associated with use of scrolling list while driving were investigated. A total of nine HUD imagery locations of full-windshield were examined through a driving simulator study. The results indicated the HUD imagery location affected all the dependent measures, that is, driving and task performance, drivers visual distraction, preference and workload.
