    LIBER's involvement in supporting digital preservation in member libraries

    Digital curation and preservation represent new challenges for universities. LIBER has invested considerable effort to engage with the new agendas of digital preservation and digital curation. Through two successful phases of the LIFE project, LIBER is breaking new ground in identifying innovative models for costing digital curation and preservation. Through LIFE’s input into the US-UK Blue Ribbon Task Force on Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access, LIBER is aligned with major international work in the economics of digital preservation. In its emerging new strategy and structures, LIBER will continue to make substantial contributions in this area, mindful of the needs of European research libraries

    CLEAR: a credible method to evaluate website archivability

    Web archiving is crucial to ensure that cultural, scientific and social heritage on the web remains accessible and usable over time. A key aspect of the web archiving process is optimal data extraction from target websites. This procedure is dicult for such reasons as, website complexity, plethora of underlying technologies and ultimately the open-ended nature of the web. The purpose of this work is to establish the notion of Website Archivability (WA) and to introduce the Credible Live Evaluation of Archive Readiness (CLEAR) method to measure WA for any website. Website Archivability captures the core aspects of a website crucial in diagnosing whether it has the potentiality to be archived with completeness and accuracy. An appreciation of the archivability of a web site should provide archivists with a valuable tool when assessing the possibilities of archiving material and in- uence web design professionals to consider the implications of their design decisions on the likelihood could be archived. A prototype application, archiveready.com, has been established to demonstrate the viabiity of the proposed method for assessing Website Archivability

    Critique of Architectures for Long-Term Digital Preservation

    Evolving technology and fading human memory threaten the long-term intelligibility of many kinds of documents. Furthermore, some records are susceptible to improper alterations that make them untrustworthy. Trusted Digital Repositories (TDRs) and Trustworthy Digital Objects (TDOs) seem to be the only broadly applicable digital preservation methodologies proposed. We argue that the TDR approach has shortfalls as a method for long-term digital preservation of sensitive information. Comparison of TDR and TDO methodologies suggests differentiating near-term preservation measures from what is needed for the long term. TDO methodology addresses these needs, providing for making digital documents durably intelligible. It uses EDP standards for a few file formats and XML structures for text documents. For other information formats, intelligibility is assured by using a virtual computer. To protect sensitive information—content whose inappropriate alteration might mislead its readers, the integrity and authenticity of each TDO is made testable by embedded public-key cryptographic message digests and signatures. Key authenticity is protected recursively in a social hierarchy. The proper focus for long-term preservation technology is signed packages that each combine a record collection with its metadata and that also bind context—Trustworthy Digital Objects.

    Cloud services help individuals and organization to use data that are managed by third parties or another person at remote locations. With the increase in the development of cloud computing environment, the security has become the major concern that has been raised more consistently in order to move data and applications to the cloud as individuals do not trust the third party cloud computing providers with their private and most sensitive data and information. This paper presents, the migration of virtual machine to improve the security in cloud computing. Virtual machine (VM) is an emulation of a particular computer system. In cloud computing, virtual machine migration is a useful tool for migrating operating system instances across multiple physical machines. It is used to load balancing, fault management, low-level system maintenance and reduce energy consumption. Virtual machine (VM) migration is a powerful management technique that gives data center operators the ability to adapt the placement of VMs in order to better satisfy performance objectives, improve resource utilization and communication locality, achieve fault tolerance, reduce energy consumption, and facilitate system maintenance activities. In the migration based security approach, proposed the placement of VMs can make enormous difference in terms of security levels. On the bases of survivability analysis of VMs and Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC) analysis, we design an algorithm that generates a secure placement arrangement that the guest VMs can moves before succeeds the attack

    A Discussion of Audiovisual Archival Methods: Conversations with Institutions, Content Creators, Archival System Designers and Integrators

    [Excerpt:] My survey of local, national, and international audiovisual archival methods highlighted the underlying cause of why archiving media for video has yet to be refined to an easily-compartmentalized process. Companies who acknowledge that archiving their media properly is a concern still see it as unglamorous and perhaps even unworthy of committing a significant-enough portion of their budgets toward a sufficient solution. Finding “a solution” begins to look like the life’s work of an artist rather than a “Point A to Point B” procedure. In my discussions with various representatives of content creators, archival system integrators, and institutional archivists, I hoped to discover success stories. In the end, I was shown just how complex the archiving process is, and how this inscrutability makes it virtually impossible to answer the question, “How much does a proper archive cost?

    Strategies for Reducing Employee Turnover in Retail Outlets

    Employee turnover in the retail industry is costly, difficult, and problematic, affecting organizational wages, benefits, and schedules in relation to serving clients, customers, and stakeholders. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore effective strategies used by retail store owners in the southeastern region of the United States to reduce employee turnover. The target population was 6 successful business owners of 6 small retail businesses in the southeastern United States who had effectively reduced employee turnover. The conceptual framework for this study was the Herzberg 2-factor theory related to workplace job satisfaction. Data were collected through face-to-face, semistructured interviews and review of archival company documents related to employee turnover. Data were coded, analyzed into themes using Yin\u27s 5-step method, triangulated, and validated by member checking to strengthen the credibility of the analyses. Three themes emerged: effective communication, supportive leadership, and competitive compensation reduced employee turnover. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide leaders with effective strategies to reduce employee turnover, leading to reductions in unemployment, stabilization of communities, and improvements to the human and social conditions outside the workplace
