The parallel event loop model and runtime: a parallel programming model and runtime system for safe event-based parallel programming
Recent trends in programming models for server-side development have shown an increasing popularity of event-based single- threaded programming models based on the combination of dynamic languages such as JavaScript and event-based runtime systems for asynchronous I/O management such as Node.JS. Reasons for the success of such models are the simplicity of the single-threaded event-based programming model as well as the growing popularity of the Cloud as a deployment platform for Web applications. Unfortunately, the popularity of single-threaded models comes at the price of performance and scalability, as single-threaded event-based models present limitations when parallel processing is needed, and traditional approaches to concurrency such as threads and locks don't play well with event-based systems. This dissertation proposes a programming model and a runtime system to overcome such limitations by enabling single-threaded event-based applications with support for speculative parallel execution. The model, called Parallel Event Loop, has the goal of bringing parallel execution to the domain of single-threaded event-based programming without relaxing the main characteristics of the single-threaded model, and therefore providing developers with the impression of a safe, single-threaded, runtime. Rather than supporting only pure single-threaded programming, however, the parallel event loop can also be used to derive safe, high-level, parallel programming models characterized by a strong compatibility with single-threaded runtimes. We describe three distinct implementations of speculative runtimes enabling the parallel execution of event-based applications. The first implementation we describe is a pessimistic runtime system based on locks to implement speculative parallelization. The second and the third implementations are based on two distinct optimistic runtimes using software transactional memory. Each of the implementations supports the parallelization of applications written using an asynchronous single-threaded programming style, and each of them enables applications to benefit from parallel execution
Performance Improvement of Multithreaded Java Applications Execution on Multiprocessor Systems
El disseny del llenguatge Java, que inclou aspectes importants com són la seva portabilitat i neutralitat envers l'arquitectura, les seves capacitats multithreading, la seva familiaritat (degut a la seva semblança amb C/C++), la seva robustesa, les seves capacitats en seguretat i la seva naturalesa distribuïda, fan que sigui un llenguatge potencialment interessant per ser utilitzat en entorns paral·lels com són els entorns de computació d'altes prestacions (HPC), on les aplicacions poden treure profit del suport que ofereix Java a l'execució multithreaded per realitzar càlculs en paral·lel, o en entorns e-business, on els servidors Java multithreaded (que segueixen l'especificació J2EE) poden treure profit de les capacitats multithreading de Java per atendre de manera concurrent un gran nombre de peticions.No obstant, l'ús de Java per la programació paral·lela ha d'enfrontar-se a una sèrie de problemes que fàcilment poden neutralitzar el guany obtingut amb l'execució en paral·lel. El primer problema és el gran overhead provocat pel suport de threads de la JVM quan s'utilitzen threads per executar feina de gra fi, quan es crea un gran nombre de threads per suportar l'execució d'una aplicació o quan els threads interaccionen estretament mitjançant mecanismes de sincronització. El segon problema és la degradació en el rendiment produïda quan aquestes aplicacions multithreaded s'executen en sistemes paral·lels multiprogramats. La principal causa d'aquest problemes és la manca de comunicació entre l'entorn d'execució i les aplicacions, la qual pot induir a les aplicacions a fer un ús descoordinat dels recursos disponibles.Aquesta tesi contribueix amb la definició d'un entorn per analitzar i comprendre el comportament de les aplicacions Java multithreaded. La contribució principal d'aquest entorn és que la informació de tots els nivells involucrats en l'execució (aplicació, servidor d'aplicacions, JVM i sistema operatiu) està correlada. Aquest fet és molt important per entendre com aquest tipus d'aplicacions es comporten quan s'executen en entorns que inclouen servidors i màquines virtuals, donat que l'origen dels problemes de rendiment es pot trobar en qualsevol d'aquests nivells o en la seva interacció.Addicionalment, i basat en el coneixement adquirit mitjançant l'entorn d'anàlisis proposat, aquesta tesi contribueix amb mecanismes i polítiques de planificació orientats cap a l'execució eficient d'aplicacions Java multithreaded en sistemes multiprocessador considerant les interaccions i la coordinació dels mecanismes i les polítiques de planificació en els diferents nivells involucrats en l'execució. La idea bàsica consisteix en permetre la cooperació entre les aplicacions i l'entorn d'execució en la gestió de recursos establint una comunicació bi-direccional entre les aplicacions i el sistema. Per una banda, les aplicacions demanen a l'entorn d'execució la quantitat de recursos que necessiten. Per altra banda, l'entorn d'execució pot ser inquirit en qualsevol moment per les aplicacions ser informades sobre la seva assignació de recursos. Aquesta tesi proposa que les aplicacions utilitzin la informació proporcionada per l'entorn d'execució per adaptar el seu comportament a la quantitat de recursos que tenen assignats (aplicacions auto-adaptables). Aquesta adaptació s'assoleix en aquesta tesi per entorns HPC per mitjà de la mal·leabilitat de les aplicacions, i per entorns e-business amb una proposta de control de congestió que fa control d'admissió basat en la diferenciació de connexions SSL per prevenir la degradació del rendiment i mantenir la Qualitat de Servei (QoS).Els resultats de l'avaluació demostren que subministrar recursos de manera dinàmica a les aplicacions auto-adaptables en funció de la seva demanda millora el rendiment de les aplicacions Java multithreaded tant en entorns HPC com en entorns e-business. Mentre disposar d'aplicacions auto-adaptables evita la degradació del rendiment, el subministrament dinàmic de recursos permet satisfer els requeriments de les aplicacions en funció de la seva demanda i adaptar-se a la variabilitat de les seves necessitats de recursos. D'aquesta manera s'aconsegueix una millor utilització dels recursos donat que els recursos que no utilitza una aplicació determinada poden ser distribuïts entre les altres aplicacions.The design of the Java language, which includes important aspects such as its portability and architecture neutrality, its multithreading facilities, its familiarity (due to its resemblance with C/C++), its robustness, its security capabilities and its distributed nature, makes it a potentially interesting language to be used in parallel environments such as high performance computing (HPC) environments, where applications can benefit from the Java multithreading support for performing parallel calculations, or e-business environments, where multithreaded Java application servers (i.e. following the J2EE specification) can take profit of Java multithreading facilities to handle concurrently a large number of requests.However, the use of Java for parallel programming has to face a number of problems that can easily offset the gain due to parallel execution. The first problem is the large overhead incurred by the threading support available in the JVM when threads are used to execute fine-grained work, when a large number of threads are created to support the execution of the application or when threads closely interact through synchronization mechanisms. The second problem is the performance degradation occurred when these multithreaded applications are executed in multiprogrammed parallel systems. The main issue that causes these problems is the lack of communication between the execution environment and the applications, which can cause these applications to make an uncoordinated use of the available resources.This thesis contributes with the definition of an environment to analyze and understand the behavior of multithreaded Java applications. The main contribution of this environment is that all levels in the execution (application, application server, JVM and operating system) are correlated. This is very important to understand how this kind of applications behaves when executed on environments that include servers and virtual machines, because the origin of performance problems can reside in any of these levels or in their interaction.In addition, and based on the understanding gathered using the proposed analysis environment, this thesis contributes with scheduling mechanisms and policies oriented towards the efficient execution of multithreaded Java applications on multiprocessor systems considering the interactions and coordination between scheduling mechanisms and policies at the different levels involved in the execution. The basis idea consists of allowing the cooperation between the applications and the execution environment in the resource management by establishing a bi-directional communication path between the applications and the underlying system. On one side, the applications request to the execution environment the amount of resources they need. On the other side, the execution environment can be requested at any time by the applications to inform them about their resource assignments. This thesis proposes that applications use the information provided by the execution environment to adapt their behavior to the amount of resources allocated to them (self-adaptive applications). This adaptation is accomplished in this thesis for HPC environments through the malleability of the applications, and for e-business environments with an overload control approach that performs admission control based on SSL connections differentiation for preventing throughput degradation and maintaining Quality of Service (QoS).The evaluation results demonstrate that providing resources dynamically to self-adaptive applications on demand improves the performance of multithreaded Java applications as in HPC environments as in e-business environments. While having self-adaptive applications avoids performance degradation, dynamic provision of resources allows meeting the requirements of the applications on demand and adapting to their changing resource needs. In this way, better resource utilization is achieved because the resources not used by some application may be distributed among other applications

Automatic generation of synthetic workloads for multicore systems
textWhen designing a computer system, benchmark programs are used with cycle accurate performance/power simulators and HDL level simulators to evaluate novel architectural enhancements, perform design space exploration, understand the worst-case power characteristics of various designs and find performance bottlenecks. This research effort is directed towards automatically generating synthetic benchmarks to tackle three design challenges: 1) For most of the simulation related purposes, full runs of modern real world parallel applications like the PARSEC, SPLASH suites cannot be used as they take machine weeks of time on cycle accurate and HDL level simulators incurring a prohibitively large time cost 2) The second design challenge is that, some of these real world applications are intellectual property and cannot be shared with processor vendors for design studies 3) The most significant problem in the design stage is the complexity involved in fixing the maximum power consumption of a multicore design, called the Thermal Design Power (TDP). In an effort towards fixing this maximum power consumption of a system at the most optimal point, designers are used to hand-crafting possible code snippets called power viruses. But, this process of trying to manually write such maximum power consuming code snippets is very tedious.
All of these aforementioned challenges has lead to the resurrection of synthetic benchmarks in the recent past, serving as a promising solution to all the challenges. During the design stage of a multicore system, availability of a framework to automatically generate system-level synthetic benchmarks for multicore systems will greatly simplify the design process and result in more confident design decisions. The key idea behind such an adaptable benchmark synthesis framework is to identify the key characteristics of real world parallel applications that affect the performance and power consumption of a real program and create synthetic executable programs by varying the values for these characteristics. Firstly, with such a framework, one can generate miniaturized synthetic clones for large target (current and futuristic) parallel applications enabling an architect to use them with slow low-level simulation models (e.g., RTL models in VHDL/Verilog) and helps in tailoring designs to the targeted applications. These synthetic benchmark clones can be distributed to architects and designers even if the original applications are intellectual property, when they are not publicly available. Lastly, such a framework can be used to automatically create maximum power consuming code snippets to be able to help in fixing the TDP, heat sinks, cooling system and other power related features of the system.
The workload cloning framework built using the proposed synthetic benchmark generation methodology is evaluated to show its superiority over the existing cloning methodologies for single-core systems by generating miniaturized clones for CPU2006 and ImplantBench workloads with only an average error of 2.9% in performance for up to five orders of magnitude of simulation speedup. The correlation coefficient predicting the sensitivity to design changes is 0.95 and 0.98 for performance and power consumption. The proposed framework is evaluated by cloning parallel applications implemented based on p-threads and OpenMP in the PARSEC benchmark suite. The average error in predicting performance is 4.87% and that of power consumption is 2.73%. The correlation coefficient predicting the sensitivity to design changes is 0.92 for performance. The efficacy of the proposed synthetic benchmark generation framework for power virus generation is evaluation on SPARC, Alpha and x86 ISAs using full system simulators and also using real hardware. The results show that the power viruses generated for single-core systems consume 14-41% more power compared to MPrime on SPARC ISA. Similarly, the power viruses generated for multicore systems consume 45-98%, 40-89% and 41-56% more power than PARSEC workloads, running multiple copies of MPrime and multithreaded SPECjbb respectively.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Automatically fixing static analysis tools violations

ciedade depende mais de sistemas de software. Defeitos de software podem custar caro
à organizações, especialmente quando causam falhas. Ferramentas de análise estática
analisam código para encontrar desvios, ou violações, de práticas recomendadas de pro-
gramação definidas como regras. Essa análise pode encontrar defeitos de software de
forma antecipada, mais rápida e barata, em contraste à inspeções manuais. Para corrigir-
se uma violação é necessário que o programador modifique o código problemático. Essas
modificações podem ser tediosas, passíveis de erro e repetitivas. Dessa forma, a au-
tomação de transformações de código é uma funcionalidade frequentemente requisitada
por desenvolvedores. Esse trabalho implementa transformações automáticas para resolver
violações identificadas por ferramentas de análise estática. Primeiro, nós investigamos o
uso da ferramenta SonarQube, uma ferramenta amplamente utilizada, em duas grandes
organizações open-source e duas instituições do Governo Federal do Brasil. Nossos re-
sultados mostram que um pequeno subconjunto de regras é responsável por uma grande
porção das violações resolvidas. Nós implementamos transformações automáticas para
11 regras do conjunto de regras comumente resolvidas achadas no estudo anterior. Nós
submetemos 38 pull requests, incluindo 920 soluções para violações, geradas automati-
camente pela nossa técnica para diversos projetos open-source na linguagem Java. Os
mantenedores dos projetos aceitaram 84% das nossas transformações, sendo 95% delas
sem nenhuma modificação. Esses resultados indicam que nossa abordagem é prática, e
pode auxiliar desenvolvedores com resoluções automáticas, uma funcionalidade frequente-
mente requisitada.Software quality is becoming more important as the reliance on software systems in-
creases. Software defects may have a high cost to organizations as some can lead to
software failure. Static analysis tools analyze code to find deviations, or violations, from
recommended programming practices defined as rules. This analysis can find software
defects earlier, faster, and cheaper than manual inspections. When fixing a violation, a
programmer is required to modify the violating code. Such modifications can be tedious,
error-prone, and repetitive. Unsurprisingly, automated transformations are frequently re-
quested by developers. This work implements automatic transformations tailored to solve
violations identified by static analysis tools. First, we investigate the use of SonarQube, a
widely used Static Analysis Tool, in two large open source organizations and two Brazil-
ian Government Federal Institutions. Our results show that a small subset of the rules
is responsible for a large portion of the fixes. We implement automatic fixes for 11 rules
from the previously found set of frequently fixed rules. We submitted 38 pull requests,
including 920 fixes generated automatically by our technique for various open-source Java
projects. Projects maintainers accepted 84% of our fixes (95% of them without any mod-
ifications). These results indicate that our approach is feasible, and can aid developers
with automatic fixes, a long requested feature
